Having said that, the difference was that during the second half against Glenafton we still created some really good chances despite not playing as well. Ironically the following day we were handed an away draw against the Glens in the second round of the Scottish Cup. It is not one that I would have chosen as there were dozens of easier teams in the draw but such is the nature of cup foot- ball. I was delighted that Chris Wilson got included in the Scotland squad recently and it is a significant achievement for both Chris and for our club for someone like him to gain a cap for his country by taking part in the 1-1 draw in Ireland. Well done Chris. I also have no doubt we have other players in this squad capable of following him into the Junior international set-up. We now have to take an enforced break from league action as we face West Of Scotland and Scot- tish Cup ties back to back. The Scottish tie away at Glenafton will have to go on the back burner whilst we look forward to today’s visit of Craigmark Burtonians in the West of Scotland Cup. On paper we will obviously be odds on to progress but football isn’t played on paper and you only have to ask Auchinleck Talbot to confirm that. Not many people would have given Wishaw any chance of staying in this competition after drawing Talbot but in this cup but it is their name that will go into the draw and not the Ayrshire giants. That in itself should serve as a warning if anyone is foolish enough to underestimate how unpredictable cup football can be! Please get behind the lads and give them plenty of encouragement to continue their good work. Onwards & upwards. Club, Community and Coal: A Case Study of Dunfermline Athletic Football Club in the 1980s James Canavan MA Sports History and Culture De Montfort University August, 2015 Acknowledgements Over the past year I have been overwhelmed by the support and guidance by many people associated with Dunfermline Athletic Football Club. From an initial, exploratory post on fans’ forum dafc.net in late July, 2014, I was immediately contacted by Donald Adamson and Jason Barber, who offered to help. Through Jason I was able to interview Jim Leishman and Ian Westwater, and Donald provided me with a high level of information about the club, in addition to the links with coal mining. I cannot thank Donald and Jason enough for their assistance. The following people have also provided help and information along the way: Gordon Baird, Alan Bairner, Kenny Cowan, Joe Graham, Jim Leishman, Duncan Simpson, John Simpson, and Ian Westwater. Every single person is a credit to themselves and to Dunfermline Athletic Football Club for giving up their free time to help me with this dissertation. I would also like to apologise to the staff at the temporary library at St Margaret’s House for my inability to work the microfiche readers, and to thank them for their help. At DMU, Matt Taylor has been very helpful in terms of the structure of the dissertation, and Neil Carter provided initial guidance. Lastly, I would like to thank my Father, Frank Canavan, for being a constant inspiration to complete this project. Since his death in 2009, I have visited Dunfermline every year, taking in a Pars match as a personal tribute.
