  • Civilian Structures As Military Restrictions the Sudden Transition to Heavy Tanks in Sweden
vulcan 5 (2017) 42-63 brill.com/vulc Civilian Structures as Military Restrictions The Sudden Transition to Heavy Tanks in Sweden Petter J. Wulff Apeltunet 7, 181 48 Lidingo, Sweden [email protected] Abstract The military community is a secluded part of society and normally has to act on the conditions offered by its civilian surroundings. When heavy vehicles were developed for war, the civilian infrastructure presented a potential restriction to vehicular mobil- ity. In Sweden, bridges were seen as a critical component of this infrastructure. It took two decades and the experiences of a second world war for the country to come to terms with this restriction. This article addresses the question as to why Swedish tanks suddenly became much heavier in the early 1940s. The country’s bridges play a key role in what happened, and the article explains how. It is a story about how a military deci- sion came to be outdated long before it was upgraded. Keywords tanks – infrastructure – transition In the 1920s and 30s, Sweden produced and imported various forms of armored vehicles—primarily so-called ‘tanks’—which had been spectacularly intro- duced in The Great War. In the case of tank technology, however, a sudden shift occurred in the early 1940s. Within a year Swedish tank weights doubled and never returned to earlier levels. Such a drastic shift is not a normal part of technological development, or at least cannot be explained by any sudden change in tank technology itself. The sudden deviation from a more gradual development path calls for an answer as to what made the shift occur.

Whether it was being scrapped or local Arabs had taken sides to make a roof with it or the like, I do not know.

  • Jagdpanzer 38 Hetzer Early
JAGDPANZER38 3711 HETZER EARLY eduard 1:35 FIRST, A FEW WORDS... ...ON THE WAR: The Second World War, from a German perspective, was not evolving favorably in 1943. Heavy losses at Stalingrad, the capitulation of German and Italian forces in North Africa in May, the defeat at the Battle of Kursk in July, and the Allied landings in Italy put increasing stresses on the German military. Furthermore, an increasingly concentrated fury from above in the form of the allied bombing campaign appeared that threatened to reduce the Reich to rubble. This campaign began to extract a heavy toll on the German ability to produce and support her weapons, including the production of tanks. On the other hand, war production in the Soviet Union and the United States steadily increased, and production figures attained were in the thousands. The German planners and designers were faced with some difficult decisions with respect on how to address the situation. One The original Pz.38(t) light tank effective method was to construct a series of tank hunter/destroyers on the chassis of existing tanks, foto V.Francev via MBI resulting in vehicles such as the Sturmgeschütz, for use in infantry support. One huge advantage of such vehicles was their relative simplicity when compared to the classic tank. There was no turret, and the complexities associated with the manufacture and installation of the turret were eliminated. The vehicles would be armed with Pak 39 anti tank guns of 75mm caliber, and were called Jagdpanzer (Fighter Tank - Tank Destroyer). Progressively, this concept was applied to other tank chassis as well.

  • GURPS WWII Classic
World War II raged from the deserts of North Africa to the jungles of the South Pacific, from the mountaintops of the Alps to the beaches of Normandy, across (and under) the high seas, and through the skies above it all. Soldiers in all of these places relied upon the machines of war: bombers, fighters, tanks, jeeps, ships, submarines, landing craft, and much more. GURPS WWII: Motor Pool has a huge variety of historically accurate vehicles from mankind’s greatest conflict. Many of the vehicles were common; others were rare or even unique. From the stodgy General Lee tank to the earliest helicopters and the wildly impractical Maus, Motor Pool has tons of new gear for every GURPS WWII player. Motor Pool also gathers in one place all the refinements to the vehicle design system that have evolved since the original corebook came out, as well as a new system to describe any WWII-era conveyance in a few simple steps. These additions include scores of new weapons to be fitted on your war machines – some historical and some products of the imagination. On top of all that, Motor Pool has advice on S how to integrate vehicles into a roleplaying T E campaign, with details on how vehicle crews V really lived and fought, from the difficulties of E supply to getting their machine moving at all. • The Soviet-German Tank Academy at Kama
The Secret School of War: The Soviet-German Tank Academy at Kama THESIS Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Ian Johnson Graduate Program in History The Ohio State University 2012 Master's Examination Committee: Jennifer Siegel, Advisor Peter Mansoor David Hoffmann Copyright by Ian Ona Johnson 2012 Abstract This paper explores the period of military cooperation between the Weimar Period German Army (the Reichswehr), and the Soviet Union. Between 1922 and 1933, four facilities were built in Russia by the two governments, where a variety of training and technological exercises were conducted. These facilities were particularly focused on advances in chemical and biological weapons, airplanes and tanks. The most influential of the four facilities was the tank testing and training grounds (Panzertruppenschule in the German) built along the Kama River, near Kazan in North- Central Russia. Led by German instructors, the school’s curriculum was based around lectures, war games, and technological testing. Soviet and German students studied and worked side by side; German officers in fact often wore the Soviet uniform while at the school, to show solidarity with their fellow officers. Among the German alumni of the school were many of the most famous practitioners of mobile warfare during the Second World War, such as Guderian, Manstein, Kleist and Model. This system of education proved highly innovative. During seven years of operation, the school produced a number of extremely important technological and tactical innovations. Among the new technologies were a new tank chassis system, superior guns, and - perhaps most importantly- a radio that could function within a tank.

  • Flakpanzer Ostwind (East Wind)
Flakpanzer Ostwind (East Wind) The “Ostwind” was the last of a series of Flakpanzers (anti-aircraft tanks) based on the Panzer IV chassis to enter production, albeit in very small numbers. The “Ostwind” carried a single 3.7cm FlaK43 gun, which was rather more effective than the less powerful 2cm guns of the “Wirbelwind”, and also needed less space in the turret, as well as only needing a crew of two (gunner and loader) in place of the gunner and two loaders of the quadruple guns. Like the “Wirbelwind” the “Ostwind” had a distinctive angular turret, this time six sided, and with the gun emerging from a slot in the pointed front of the turret. After trials in July, on 18 August 1944 Ostbau were given a contract to produce 100 “Ostwind”. Less than half of these vehicles would be produced – the first fifteen of the eventual total of forty-three were completed in December 1944, far too late to have any impact on the war. The Trumpeter 1/35 kit has received some brutal reviews. As you’ve probably guessed they are related to the accuracy of the subject. The kit is basically the prototype version, but what I think has been missed by many is that this kit is a steal for what you get, and in the end it’s not that hard to convert it into the production version. The kit also includes a full interior and engine details. So although this isn’t a full build article I’ll show you what I did to convert it to the production variant.
