  • GURPS WWII Classic
World War II raged from the deserts of North Africa to the jungles of the South Pacific, from the mountaintops of the Alps to the beaches of Normandy, across (and under) the high seas, and through the skies above it all. Soldiers in all of these places relied upon the machines of war: bombers, fighters, tanks, jeeps, ships, submarines, landing craft, and much more. GURPS WWII: Motor Pool has a huge variety of historically accurate vehicles from mankind’s greatest conflict. Many of the vehicles were common; others were rare or even unique. From the stodgy General Lee tank to the earliest helicopters and the wildly impractical Maus, Motor Pool has tons of new gear for every GURPS WWII player. Motor Pool also gathers in one place all the refinements to the vehicle design system that have evolved since the original corebook came out, as well as a new system to describe any WWII-era conveyance in a few simple steps. These additions include scores of new weapons to be fitted on your war machines – some historical and some products of the imagination. On top of all that, Motor Pool has advice on S how to integrate vehicles into a roleplaying T E campaign, with details on how vehicle crews V really lived and fought, from the difficulties of E supply to getting their machine moving at all. • Flakpanzer Ostwind (East Wind)
Flakpanzer Ostwind (East Wind) The “Ostwind” was the last of a series of Flakpanzers (anti-aircraft tanks) based on the Panzer IV chassis to enter production, albeit in very small numbers. The “Ostwind” carried a single 3.7cm FlaK43 gun, which was rather more effective than the less powerful 2cm guns of the “Wirbelwind”, and also needed less space in the turret, as well as only needing a crew of two (gunner and loader) in place of the gunner and two loaders of the quadruple guns. Like the “Wirbelwind” the “Ostwind” had a distinctive angular turret, this time six sided, and with the gun emerging from a slot in the pointed front of the turret. After trials in July, on 18 August 1944 Ostbau were given a contract to produce 100 “Ostwind”. Less than half of these vehicles would be produced – the first fifteen of the eventual total of forty-three were completed in December 1944, far too late to have any impact on the war. The Trumpeter 1/35 kit has received some brutal reviews. As you’ve probably guessed they are related to the accuracy of the subject. The kit is basically the prototype version, but what I think has been missed by many is that this kit is a steal for what you get, and in the end it’s not that hard to convert it into the production version. The kit also includes a full interior and engine details. So although this isn’t a full build article I’ll show you what I did to convert it to the production variant.

It is therefore unnecessary to add more fantasies to the genuine historical facts in the field of Nazi occultism, especially when it comes to their weird expeditions and their pseudo-scientific researches. The true amateur of sensational and strange stories can still be fully satisfied with Himmler's Witch Project, or the Hollow Earth Theory, or the various moons of the World Ice Theory that fell on our planet and drowned the Atlanteans. This is real history and some high-ranking Nazis did believe in these theories, no matter how sensational they may sound to modern ears. It does not add anything to the uncanny spell of such stories to pollute them with material that cannot be verified or, even worse, with pure lies coming straight out of the imagination of poor authors in search of quick money and fame.

  • Panzer 38(T) Kugelblitz
During the later years of World War II, the German air force had lost control of the air. This was particularly true on the western front. British and American planes roamed almost at will seeking ground targets. This made mobile deployment of ground forces very difficult. This movement was especially rough for slow-moving German tanks and armored columns. (Notice that speed is relative; compared to infantry on foot, a tank moves very quickly. That is a big part of its tactical and strategic value. Compared to a strafing Mustang P-51, though, a tank is a relatively slow-moving target.) In response to Army requests, German manufacturers devoted huge resources to this problem. At first there were “stop gap” solutions. This entailed mounting available anti-aircraft guns on obsolete tank chassis, usually with minimal armor protection. The full tank chassis was important as the vehicle had to keep pace with main battle tanks to be useful. Halftracks over- loaded with an anti-aircraft gun simply couldn’t keep up cross country. These stop-gap solutions were only marginally acceptable to the troops who had to use them. Most provided little protection from enemy fire. A more permanent solution was achieved with vehicles like the Wirbelwind and Ostwind. These mounted quad 20mm and single 37mm flak guns, respectively, in fully rotating turrets. The turrets had open tops. At least the crews were protected from small arms fire on the ground as they attempted to engage air targets. Image 1. “Wirbelwind” based on Pz IV chassis. These design projects led to the pinnacle of anti-aircraft panzers for the Wehrmacht; the Panzer IV-based “Kugelblitz”.
