J.C.’s Cajun/ Dance Nashville held it’s “Tardi” Gras Dance at Bellevue Dance Center in The Centre of Bellevue, February 28, four days after Mardi Gras. There were basic and inter- mediate zydeco dance lessons. Then Cajun Stomp Band played Louisiana music for two-step, waltz, jig, slow and swing dances on the almost 1200 square foot suspended hardwood dance floor. Last weekend’s snowfall probably put a large damper on the First Annual White Bluff Powwow, but for those who did show up it was a lot of fun as well as a culturally enriching experience. “There are several dances, you’ve got the Buffalo Grass Dance, and you have Round Dance, and then you’ve got the Intertribal, and the Chicken Dance,” said MC Estel Ayakatubby, in explaining the different kinds of dances that were being performed. “They’re all going to be closely performed here today before the time runs out. Now some of the dancers who do differ- ent styles are not here, so for right now we’re going to limit what we’re doing just to what those who are here know.” Snowfall or not, the event managed to draw peo- ple from at least six different tribes—Oneida, Barbie Harrison with her daughter, Bailey, the Cherokee, Choctaw, Lakota, Mohawk, and Innu— reigning Powwow Princess for the Trail of Tears. some of whom came from as far away as New Hampshire to be here.
