This collection contains biographical information on Jeff Hughson on the form of one DVD and several news articles, and periodicals, radio playlists, concert flyers, promotional material, sound recordings and VHS tapes collected by Hughson and documenting the musical scene in Sacramento from the 1960s to the 1980s. Biography / Administrative History Jeff Hughson was born in Sacramento in 1950 and graduated from Sacramento High School in 1968 and shortly thereafter joined the staff of KZAP, Sacramento’s first freeform rock music radio station, which began broadcasting on November 8, 1968. After two and half years as music director and DJ at KZAP, Hughson left the station in 1971 to work as a DJ at Sacramento FM radio stations KNDE, KSFM, and KXOA-FM. In 1974, he left KXOA to work at a variety of jobs, producing concerts, fairs, and festivals, and serving as the entertainment director for the Contra Costa County Fair. Hughson also worked as a record collector and dealer, running a mail order house and trading company. In 1989, Hughson teamed with Guide to the Jeff Hughson MS 67 2 collection musician Bob Cheevers to create the Bob Cheevers Sacramento Songwriters Showcase, with Hughson as promoter and thematic director and Cheevers as host and talent coordinator. The Bob Cheevers Sacramento Songwriters Showcase ended in 1991, and in 2000, Hughson and partners Dennis Newhall and Martin DeAnda started Dig Music, a record label devoted to making available previously unreleased music by Northern California artists, primarily from the 1960s and 1970s. Scope and Content of Collection Jeff Hughson collection contains biographical information on Jeff Hughson and several news articles, and periodicals, radio playlists, concert flyers, promotional material, sound recordings and VHS tapes collected by Hughson and documenting the musical scene in Sacramento from the 1960s to the 1980s. The collection is organized into seven series: Series 1. Biographical Material includes one DVD and two news articles referencing Hughson. Series 2. Songwriters Showcase includes one news article and eleven VHS tapes documenting the Showcase. Series 3. Radio Playlists includes three folders of radio playlist from Sacramento radio stations KROY and KXOA. Series 4. Flyers includes thirty-eight concert flyers and five movie handbills. Series 5. Music Publications and Programs includes festival and movie programs and local music newsletters about the Sacramento music scene. Series 6. Promotional Material comprised of radio station decals. Series 7. Music Recordings, which includes 45’s, albums, audiocassettes, and compact discs featuring local artists. Series 8.     Dave Stogner Only A Memory Away - The Dave and Vi Stogner Story (A history of his music and their romance) FOREWORD By Tom Miller It could have been disconcerting for the young fiddle player on the stage. Early evening in an empty honky-tonk, it's still light out. It's the beginning of the 1980's and we are in the middle of the Urban Cowboy scare. “Hat Acts” were all the rage at that time, too. Resistol rock and roll babies are playing Country music to thin air. The front door is open--there is no way to stop the momentum of Dave Stogner's entrance. The erect sixty-something cowboy with the square jaw marches directly to the middle of the sunken dance floor at O.T. Price's Music Hall and kneels, elbow on higher knee, hand on chin, eyes fixed on young fiddle player. Rodin's ”Thinker,” Stogner's “Fiddle Contemplator.” No sense being rattled. The fiddler played right to the chiseled Western Swing bandleader. If there is a big linebacker you might as well run right at him, if you can't get around him. Stogner was not moving. My attention turned to making sure we had enough Jack Daniels and beer stocked for the night--bartending was my intro to the concert coordinating business. A few minutes later Dave walked directly toward me at the bar, wearing a Texas sized grin spanning Waco to Juarez. The fiddle player that night would do just fine. I was in my late twenties and loved all kinds of music, except most produced pop stuff.

LOSS LEADERS SERIES (1969-1980) Depending On How You Count Them, 34 Essential Various Artist Collections From Another Time We figured it was about time to pull together all of the incredible Warner Bros. Loss Leaders releases dating back to 1969 (and even a little earlier). For those who lived through the era, Warner Bros. Records was winning the sales of an entire generation by signing and supporting some of music’s most uniquely groundbreaking recording artists… during music’s most uniquely groundbreak- ing time. With an appealingly irreverent style (“targeted youth marketing,” it would be called today), WB was making lifelong fans of the kids who entered into the label’s vast catalog of art- ists via the Loss Leaders series—advertised on inner sleeves & brochures, and offering generous selections priced at $1 per LP, $2 for doubles and $3 for their sole 3-LP release, Looney Tunes And Merrie Melodies. And that was including postage. Yes… those were the days, but back then there were very few ways, outside of cut-out bins or a five-finger discount, to score bulk music as cheaply. Warners unashamedly admitted that their inten- tions were to sell more records, by introducing listeners to music they weren’t hearing on their radios, or finding in many of their (still weakly distributed) record stores. And it seemed to work… because the series continued until 1980, and the program issued approximately 34 titles, by our questionable count (detailed in later posts). But, the oldsters among us all fondly remember the multi-paged, gatefold sleeves and inviting artwork/packaging that beckoned from the inner sleeves of our favorite albums, not to mention the assorted rarities, b-sides and oddities that dotted many of the releases.

In­ dividuals and groups of national and international fame, represen­ ting the arts, seiencl's. education, politics, and entertainment, have pa~sed before Emporia audiences in a century long parade. Since 1879, this formidable array of personalities has provided informa­ tion and entertainment to Emporia citizens at an average rate of once eaeh fifteen days, The occasional appearanee of a famous personality in a small city may well be considered a matter of historical coineidence. When, however, such visits are numbered in the hundreds, arc fre­ quent, and persist for a century, it appears reasonable to rank the phenomenon as an important part of that eity's cultural heritage. Emporia, although located in the interior plains, never ae­ cepted the role of being an isolated community. It seems that the (own's pioneers eonsidered themselves not on the frontier fringi'" of America, but strategically situated near its heart. I was four years old when my uncle, Jack Henderson, the program director of 50,000 watt KCUL-AM in Fort Worth/Dallas, came to visit my family in 1959. He brought me around one hundred and fifty 45 RPM records from his station (duplicate copies that they no longer needed) and a small record player that played only 45s (not albums). I played those records day and night, completely wore them out. From that point, I wanted to be a disc jockey. But instead of going for the usual “comedic” approach most DJs took, I tried to be more informative by dropping in tidbits of a song’s background, something that always fascinated me. Originally with my “Classic Country Music Stories” site on Facebook (which is still going strong), and now with this book, I can tell the whole story, something that time restraints on radio wouldn’t allow. I began deejaying as a career at the age of sixteen in 1971, most notably at Nashville’s WENO-AM and WKDA- AM, Lakeland, Florida’s WPCV-FM (past winner of the “Radio Station of the Year” award from the Country Music Association), and Springfield, Missouri’s KTTS AM & FM and KWTO-AM, but with syndication and automation which overwhelmed radio some twenty-five years ago, my final DJ position ended in 1992.
