Twisted Trails of the Wold West By Matthew Baugh © 2006 The Old West was an interesting place, and even more so in the Wold- Newton Universe. Until fairly recently only a few of the heroes and villains who inhabited the early western United States had been confirmed through crossover stories as existing in the WNU. Several comic book miniseries have done a lot to change this, and though there are some problems fitting each into the tapestry of the WNU, it has been worth the effort. Marvel Comics’ miniseries, Rawhide Kid: Slap Leather was a humorous storyline, parodying the Kid’s established image and lampooning westerns in general. It is best known for ‘outing’ the Kid as a homosexual. While that assertion remains an open issue with fans, it isn’t what causes the problems with incorporating the story into the WNU. What is of more concern are the blatant anachronisms and impossibilities the story offers. We can accept it, but only with the caveat that some of the details have been distorted for comic effect. When the Rawhide Kid is established as a character in the Wold-Newton Universe he provides links to a number of other western characters, both from the Marvel Universe and from classic western novels and movies. It draws in the Marvel Comics series’ Blaze of Glory, Apache Skies, and Sunset Riders as wall as DC Comics’ The Kents. As with most Marvel and DC characters there is the problem with bringing in the mammoth superhero continuities of the Marvel and DC universes, though this is not insurmountable.

THE COVER Michelle Corona-Allen of the University of Oklahoma Communication Services designed the cover of this book. The three photographs feature images closely associated with Walter Stanley Campbell and his research on Native American history and culture. From left to right, the first photograph shows a ledger drawing by Sioux chief White Bull that depicts him capturing two horses from a camp in 1876. The second image is of Walter Stanley Campbell talking with White Bull in the early 1930s. Campbell’s oral interviews of prominent Indians during 1928-1932 formed the basis of some of his most respected books on Indian history. The third photograph is of another White Bull ledger drawing in which he is shown taking horses from General Terry’s advancing column at the Little Big Horn River, Montana, 1876. Of this act, White Bull stated, “This made my name known, taken from those coming below, soldiers and Crows were camped there.” Available from University of Oklahoma Western History Collections 630 Parrington Oval, Room 452 Norman, Oklahoma 73019 No state-appropriated funds were used to publish this guide. Away to the window we flew like a flash, tore mini blinds and poked a hole in the sash The moon on the breast of the lawn never mowed, gave the luster of mid-day to the toys scattered below. When what to our wondering eyes should appear? Burnt pie crust toppers shaped like reindeer. With a chef quickly following, tossing pies without care, I knew in a moment Mom was pulling out her hair. Cavalier Cowboys September 6, 2020 Stages by Ripsaw The Long Branch Saloon The Long Branch Saloon was a well-known saloon in Dodge City, Kansas from about 1874 to 1885. It had numerous owners, most notably Chalk Beeson and gunfighter Luke Short. The establishment provided gambling and live entertainment, including Beeson's five-person orchestra. It was the scene of several altercations, shoot-outs, gunfights, and standoffs often associated with cattle towns in the American wild west. Most famous was the 1879 Long Branch Saloon Gunfight, in which Frank Loving killed Levi Richardson. Chalkley Beeson, a wealthy farmer and rancher, and William Harris bought the saloon in 1878. Harris named it after his hometown of Long Branch, New Jersey.[2] It was a plain storefront bar with little ornamentation, typical for frontier saloons of the time. The saloon prospered until the railroad replaced the cattle drive. The establishment burned down in 1885 and was never rebuilt. Community Newsletter Week of April 9 - 13 2018 A publication of the City of Dodge City Public Information Office 1. Street crews have been removing the remaining snow fence in areas throughout town. Crew’s also bladed gravel roads and spread salt throughout town after the precipitation over the weekend. 2. Sanitation will have a route change for the areas of 5th to 2nd from Spruce to Comanche. These areas will be switched from alley bins to poly carts and the new route day will be Monday starting April 23rd. 3. A longhorn calf was born at the Longhorn Park located at the airport last Tuesday afternoon. 4. The Community Housing Association of Dodge City will have a volunteer paint day on Wednesday, April 18th, at 9:00 am (weather permitting) to paint the exterior of 1521 Mulberry Circle. There will also be an open house and hamburger feed at 1521 Mulberry Circle on Friday, May 4th, at 11:00 am. For more information regarding both events, see the attached flyers. 5. Due to the weather forecast the Long Branch Lagoon Egg Hunt and Bazaar has been officially canceled. Last chance to get the Buy 3 Get 1 Free deal for Long Branch Lagoon season passes is this Sunday, April 15th.
