Pope John XXIII in Pacem in Terris • •• Pope John XXIII The Pacem In Terris Peace and Freedom Award By establishing the Pacem in Terris Peace and Freedom Award. the Davenport Catholic Interracial Council intends to commemorate one of the most notable events in the modern history of Christianity -- the publication of the encyclical PAC8M IN TERRIS. Further. we intend to honor the person of Pope John XXIII. a man who for a brief time was truly the leader of all men of good will. Protestant, Catholic, Jew, and non-believer. Finally, we intend that this award proclaim the inseparable connection between freedom, equality, and peace MOST REV. RALPH L. HAYES, D.O. in the lives of all people.     Pacem in terris Peace and Freedom Award Tuesday, April 9, 2019 DAVENPORT, IOWA His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama is the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism. He was born in 1935 to a farming family in a small hamlet located in Taktser Amdo, Northeastern Tibet. At the age of two, he was recognized as the reincarnation of the previous 13 Dalai Lamas. At age fifteen, on November 17, 1950, he assumed full temporal political duties. In 1959, following the brutal suppression of the Tibetan national uprising in Lhasa by Chinese troops, His Holiness was forced to flee to Dharamsala, Northern India, where he currently lives as a refugee. He has lived in exile for 60 years in northern India, advocating nonviolently and steadfastly on behalf of the Tibetan people for preservation of their culture, language, religion and well-being. China views the Dalai Lama as a threat to its efforts to control Tibet and Buddhism. He was awarded the 1989 Nobel Peace Prize for his non- violent efforts for the liberation of Tibet and concern for global environmental problems. On Oct. 17, 2007, the Dalai Lama received the U.S. Congressional Gold Medal, our country’s highest civilian honor. His Holiness has traveled around the world and spoken about the welfare of Tibetans, the environment, economics, women’s rights and nonviolence. Years earlier, the pastor of the parish had been trained by the IAF and, once he took over leadership of our congregation, began the organizing process by choosing several “leaders” to participate in what he termed “a new ministry.” These people were already active in the parish, well-known and respected.
