Email: [email protected] © Institute of Race Relations 2006 Preface In this issue of the Bulletin, we document around eighty of the most serious incidents of racial violence that have taken place across Europe over the last eleven months. These attacks occurred as the war on terror heightened prejudices against Muslims and foreigners. As Islam has been essentialised (by commentators, politicians and the media) as inherently violent and migration has been depicted as a threat to national security, 'Muslim' has become synonymous with ‘terrorist’, and migrant and foreigner with ‘crime’.

Email: [email protected] © Institute of Race Relations 2008 Editorial Populist politicians – mostly, although not entirely, from centre and extreme-Right parties – are seek- ing to win elections by mobilising voters against foreign criminals, ‘immigrant’ youth and the Roma. But this resort to xenophobia via crime comes at a high social cost, as the summaries provided in this Bulletin make clear. Politicians who make use of divisive and reckless populism to gain votes, put post-war European democratic standards and values at risk. This was most dramatically shown in Italy, in November 2007, when, shameful, deportation policies, based on the collective punishment of all Romanian immigrants (read Roma), were introduced by a centre-left government.

Actualmente, algunos círculos académicos consideran a esta corriente como pseudocientífica, cuestión que ha sido fuente de controversia. 158 Book Reviews / Fascism 1 (2012) 155–160 Andrea Mammone, Emmanuel Godin and Brian Jenkins, ed. Mapping the Extreme Right in Contemporary Europe: From Local to Transnational. London: Routledge, 2012. 339 p. The volume maps and explores extreme-right parties, organizations and movements in a number of European countries and regions. Its editors and authors determine that the radical right had escaped from their political ghettos and in the last few decades had adjusted to the particular political situations of their respective countries or regions. Although the extreme right movements use the rhetoric of nationalist or racist exclusion and argue to be rooted in a particular territory or state they bear striking similarities. They cooperate with each other and share similar values as well as the common aim of transforming Europe into a white continent composed of homogenous national states. The volume is divided into five parts devoted to different regions or aspects. The first part concentrates on local and regional perspectives. It starts with Mathew J. Goodwin’s article on the British National Party (BNP). Goodwin ascertains that the BNP finds more voters in areas in which the number of foreign-borne people has risen over recent years. John Veugelers studies the impact of post-colonialism on the radical right in France. Nitzan Shoshan explains how young Berliners impacted by racist ideologies operate in this multi-ethnic city. Jérôme Jamin compares the radical right movements in Wallonia, Brussels and Flanders. Giorgia Bulli and Filippo Tronconi scrutinize the Italian Lega Nord, its regionalism based on the mythology of the Celtic origins of the Padanian peoples, its opposition against the Italian state, the European Union and immigrants and its cooperation with Italian neo-fascist parties.
