ASEAN Cuisine Online Recipes Vietnamese and Thai cooking recipes/videos will be released on the Sakai City Government website for a limited time! As we are celebrating the 1st anniversary of the inscription of the Mozu-Furuichi Kofungun as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the cooking will incorporate kofun (ancient mounded tombs) and Director Haniwa will make an appearance in the recipe/ video. Vietnamese cuisine: Summer rolls (including a version like temakizushi where you eat as you roll) and chè (sweet pudding/soup dessert) with kofun- shaped tapioca. The recipe will be available until 10pm on Saturday 31 October (time has changed from last newsletter’s edition!) Thai cuisine: Chicken green curry with kofun- shaped rice, shrimp spring rolls, and a sweet potato in coconut milk dessert. -

News Release January 28, 2014 Osaka Government Tourism Bureau Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, Kinki District Transport Bureau NIPPON TELEGRAPH AND TELEPHONE WEST CORPORATION Regional Headquarters Kansai NTT Broadband Platform, Inc. Free Wi-Fi Service “Osaka Free Wi-Fi” to be Launched For Foreign Tourists Across Osaka Prefecture Starting January 29, Osaka Government Tourism Bureau will provide free Wi-Fi service “Osaka Free Wi-Fi” for tourists. The service will be available in tourist facilities, public transportation, hotels, restaurants, etc. in Osaka Prefecture. In an effort to attract more users, customer-attracting service “Osaka Enjoy Rally” will also be launched in March. The free Wi-Fi service will be enhanced even further through collaboration among Kansai Regional Headquarters of NIPPON TELEGRAPH AND TELEPHONE WEST CORPORATION (hereinafter referred to as “NTT West”), NTT Broadband Platform, Inc. (hereinafter referred to as “NTTBP”), etc. With the aim of improving the service for tourists, “Osaka Free Wi-Fi” will be further expanded under the cooperation of Osaka Prefecture, Osaka City, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, Kinki District Transport Bureau (hereinafter referred to as “Kinki District Transport Bureau”) , and other public and private sector organizations. 1. Objective In the fiscal year of 2012, approximately 2.03 million foreign tourists visited Osaka and that number is expected to rise to around 2.6 million in this fiscal year. Mozu Mounded Tombs Visitor Center Address: 2-160 Mozusekiuncho, Sakai-ku Nearest Station: 5 minute walk from Mozu Station (JR Hanwa Line) Time: 9:00~18:00 Admission fee: Free Closed: New Year holiday period Nestled conveniently near the Worship Place of Nintoku-tenno-ryo Kofun, the building of the former Iroha café has been remodeled to be the Mozu Mounded Tombs Visitor Center. This facility will serve as a place to provide information to visitors who are new to kofun and their place in the history of ancient Japan. The grand opening was on 13 March and I had the opportunity to visit beforehand to write this article. Although the final installations weren’t finished yet, the interior was stylish and spacious. -

Monitoring 6.a Key Indicators for Measuring State of Conservation In order to assuredly maintain the Outstanding Universal Value, enhance institutional capacity and improve skills concerning repairs, restorations and maintenance works, as well as disaster prevention and risk preparedness, the component parts and the buffer zones shall be monitored on a regular basis. Monitoring the state of conservation and negative impacts on the property as a whole, as described in Chapter 4 “State of Conservation and Factors Affecting the Property”, shall be conducted. In monitoring the property, indicators are set based on the following three viewpoints to cope with the potential threats identified in 4.b “Factors affecting the property” of this nomination dossier. The indicators and measurement methods are shown in Table 6-1. 1) Whether the Outstanding Universal Value of the property (p. 165), as well as the three attributes conveying the Value (p. 176) including the integrity (p. 177) and authenticity (p. 179), stated in Chapter 3 “Justification for Inscription”, are being maintained; 2) What impact the potential threats (development and environmental pressures, natural disasters, visitation, etc. see pp. 249 - 252), identified in Chapter 4 “State of Conservation and Factors Affecting the Property”, had (or are having) on the property; and 3) Whether the protective and management measures for the property and its buffer zones, together with its presentation and utilization, are functioning appropriately as described in Chapter 5 “Protection and Management”. -
