8 – CONTINUED EFFORTS (JUDGES 1:1-2:5)
I. Successes and Failures (1:1-36)
A. The Success of Judah and Simeon (1:1-20)
1. Judah’s Primacy (1:1-3)
- Israel asked which tribe would be the first to fight against the Canaanites.
- The Lord responded that Judah would lead and that he had delivered the enemy to them.
- Judah entered into an agreement with Simeon to aid each other in the conquest.
2. The Victory at Bezek (1:4-8)
- Judah defeated the Canaanites at Bezek and captured Jerusalem.
3. The Conquest in the South and the West (1:9-20)
- With the help of the Simeon, Judah conquered the south and the west of the land.
B. The Failure of Benjamin (1:21)
- The tribe of Benjamin dwelled with the Jebusites because they could not drive them out.
C. The Partial Success of Joseph (1:22-29)
- Ephraim and Manasseh were able to defeat and capture Bethel.
- They were not able to capture other cities because the Canaanites were determined to stay.
D. The Failure of Israelite Tribes (1:30-33)
- The tribes of Zebulun, Asher and Naphtali could not drive the Canaanites from their territory.
E. The Confinement of Dan (1:34-36)
- The Amorites forced and confined the tribe of Dan to the mountains.
II. The Condemnation for Disobedience (2:1-5)
A. The Pronouncement by the Angel of the Lord (2:1-3)
- The Angel of Lord recalled how he led Israel from Egypt into the land.

- He questions why they did this and tells them that he will not drive out the Canaanites.
- The Canaanites will become a trap to them and a thorn in their side.
B. The Response of Israel (2:4-5)
- The children of Israel responded to the pronouncement by crying out and weeping.
- They renamed the place of meeting “weeping” and sacrificed to lord there.
