With this rise comes a vast array of new opportunities for U.S. businesses to cash in on China’s deep wealth and opportunity, while helping to make the U.S. and its businesses strong economic partners with Asian nations. The region is composed of three major areas: the Municipality of Shanghai, Zhejiang Province, and Jiangsu Province. The total area is 81,300 square miles (210,700 square kilometers)77. Population-wise, the region is home to over 105 million inhabitants78. It is considered to be the world’s sixth-largest economic center79. This factbook is designed to provide basic updated information specifically on the Yangtze River Delta Region so that businesses and corporations that are interested in eastern central China’s market have a baseline of information from which to launch their investments. This book specifically highlights six major booming cities of the region: Shanghai, Nanjing, Hangzhou, Suzhou, Ningbo, and Wuxi. China and the Yangtze River Delta region are rapidly growing, developing, and changing, and U.S. businesses will only be able to get ahead through careful research and understanding of the region before diving into China’s complex market.
