I was in a band that played at the first annual Ska Fest. If you had said to me then that the crazy group of haphazard fans and small promoters—held together with duct tape, dancehall, and all the passion that makes a local music scene great—was going to keep this festival going for ten years, or even five... Well, I’d have said you were crazy. Actually, I think I did say they were crazy. Years went by and as I got further away from the front of the stage, I felt I needed to do something to give back to those who’d given me so much. And here I am, helping to ring in the tenth year of circus-like antics and skanking in the sun. The festival is a bit of a bigger monster than it was in the old days and no less daunting to organize, but a few important things remain true to everyone involved. This is a truly grassroots, by-the-people-for-the-people event. It’s driven by passion, friendship, and loyalty to the fans. On behalf of the Board of Directors and everyone involved, I want to welcome you to this year’s Ska Fest. We put together a lineup of talent that gives a nod to the last ten years and looks forward to the next ten. I’m sure when you see the dozens of volunteers, musicians, and organizers rocking with thousands of fans you’ll get a sense of why we continue to do all this. Enjoy! DClark Darryl Clark Treasurer Victoria BC Ska Society A Little Bit of Trivia.... Ska is a music genre that originated in Jamaica in the late 1950 s and was a precursor to rocksteady and reggae. Ska combined elements of Caribbean mento and calypso with American jazz and rhythm and blues. It is characterized by a walking bass line, accented guitar or piano rhythms on the offbeat, and in some cases, jazz-like horn riffs. 1 The Victoria BC Ska Society is a non-profit organization Message from the Mayor Band Bios A-Z comprised of a handful of organizers, volunteers and Board It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the City Brave New Waves of Directors.
