The notion that Americans needed to learn more about other cultures in the world, she argued, was tantamount to admitting “that the events of Septem- ber 11th were our fault, that it was our failure to understand Islam that led to so many deaths and so much destruction.” Instead of teaching diversity and toler- ance, teachers from kindergarten to the top colleges and universities would do better to concentrate on the classics of world history and, most of all, the history of the American nation. The best way to understand the world in a time of na- tional crisis, she concluded, was to read Of Plymouth Plantation, the writings of the founding fathers, or the heroic accounts of American soldiers during World War II by Stephen Ambrose.1 By unapologetically promoting national history and patriotism over diversity and tolerance, Cheney advanced her long-standing agenda to steer the national curriculum clear of multiculturalism. Her decision to assail what she called the “multicultural argument” in the wake of this national disaster also made clear that the ongoing debate over multiculturalism, diversity, and national identity was more alive than ever, as Americans struggled to make sense of “9/11.” It has been debated whether this ominous date was a decisive turning point in American and global history, or should be understood rather in the context of long-term national and international developments and tensions.2 It certainly is true that the American War on Terror, the invasion of Iraq, and the ensuing debate about civil liberties for which Abu Ghraib and Guantánamo Bay became contested sym- bols opened a new chapter in a long history of constitutional interpretation. More importantly, the terrorist attacks by radical Muslims of foreign origin led Ameri- cans to recast their perceptions of diversity and assimilation within a national framework, and at the same time to reevaluate the position of the United States in the world. Cheney’s remarks are illustrative of several themes that are central to this vol- ume. Her combative accusation unambiguously reminds us of the highly contro- versial and contingent nature of multiculturalism, a concept that can be said to 7 have developed in dialectical opposition to competing perspectives on citizenship and plurality in Western society. The battle was still going on, she seemed to say. Yet at the same time her argument made clear that both combatants and battle- field had significantly changed after 9/11. The way she associated multicultural- ism with the understanding of Islam and a failure to “encourage the study of our past” in the context of Western civilization suggested a global perspective that was new to the debate about cultural diversity. Both in the United States and Western Europe, the term multiculturalism now became enlisted in the political and academic discourses about the presence of Muslims within Western socie- ties.3 Since this happened in different ways on the two sides of the Atlantic, while both trajectories retained many common elements and dialogical moments, it is well worth studying these changing approaches to multiculturalism from a trans- atlantic perspective.     Cultural Dimensions and Politics under Globalized Conditions: Traditionalist orthodoxies vs. constructivist perspectives Benno Werlen (Jena) The so-called cultural turn has challenged the established research perspectives of both the humanities and human geography. One of its legacies is that not only in both areas of research cultural aspects are increasingly viewed as relevant for helping to analyze and explain human practices, but also political discourses are integrating the cultural dimension in a more direct way. However, under globalized conditions of local actions the cultural dimension of human practices is of growing significance, especially on the level of everyday life, as regards the interrelationship of local/regional traditions and actions across distance. The prospects of success of all kinds of fundamentalist discourses are rapidly increasing related to a decreasing availability of knowledge of different cultural worlds. Acquiring and expanding geographical cultural knowledge is becoming an even more important task than ever before in the constitution of images and representations of the world. To meet these challenges, it is important to deepen the understanding of the geographical (or spatial) dimension of the construction and reproduction of cultural realities, a process implied in social, economic, and political actions and in the transformation of nature by human actions. But to reach this goal, we need a critical and radical revision of the traditional geographical perspectives that are (curiously) drawn upon in late-modern cultural research. In my view, it is necessary to overcome the space-centered traditionalist orthodoxy and to take a step forward to an understanding of the constitution of cultural worlds and the formation of sociocultural matrices as also inherently spatial or geographical, whilst acknowledging that this kind of late-modern geography rests on constructivist grounds.

    Race Matters The New York Times recently reported that members of the Congressional Black Caucus are concerned that President Obama has not showed greater concern for African Americans who are suffering disproportionately in the recession. While acknowledging his efforts to advance racial consciousness, some say he has failed to lead on the race issue. During his campaign for president, Obama said that race is an issue this nation cannot afford to ignore. A There continue to be racially connected “disparities that can be traced to inequalities passed on from earlier generations.” He cautioned, however, that we should embrace the burdens of the past without becoming victims of that past, and People of Color need to join their grievances to the larger aspirations of all Americans. Joining with C others to address grievances is an important organizing tool to effect change, but it has its dangers: each group can be dealt with as bringing individual needs, which through negotiation, find resolution in a particular piece of legislation, government program, or action. The systemic and historic influences on each group can be put aside to T identify one set of needs everyone can agree to. This can foster the illusion that redress can be only achieved in a post racial, non-divisive, color blind manner, or we will be trapped in the divisiveness of explicit dialogues about I the effects of racism. Shebly Steele says that this is Obama’s bind: to appeal to post-racialism in order to get things done or speak up for the needs of the Black community, and thereby alienate white voters.

Raymond Williams, who was as respon­ sible as anyone for the centrality of the term, once told an interviewer that he sometimes wished he had never heard the damn word. I know the I feeling. After looking around my office, a student once joked that every book in it had the word culture in its tide - an exaggeration, but not by much. Over the last fifteen years, the ostensibly innocuous phrase "cultural studies" has become a divisive slogan, celebrated or denounced for either rescuing or destroying the humanities. How did a term which was almost entirely the property of mainstream scholarship and ~onservative criticism in 1950 become the slogan of the left, the postrnodern, and the avant-garde in zooo? There is little doubt that the concept of culture was generally conservative at mid-century, tied to notions of consensus and organicism. As Warren Susman has argued, the "general and even popular 'discovery' of the concept of culture" in the 1930s "could and did have results far more conservative than radical, no matter what the intentions of those who originally championed some of the ideas and efforts." Why did this change?1 One answer is that it didn't change.
