Raymond Williams, who was as respon sible as anyone for the centrality of the term, once told an interviewer that he sometimes wished he had never heard the damn word. I know the I feeling. After looking around my office, a student once joked that every book in it had the word culture in its tide - an exaggeration, but not by much. Over the last fifteen years, the ostensibly innocuous phrase "cultural studies" has become a divisive slogan, celebrated or denounced for either rescuing or destroying the humanities. How did a term which was almost entirely the property of mainstream scholarship and ~onservative criticism in 1950 become the slogan of the left, the postrnodern, and the avant-garde in zooo? There is little doubt that the concept of culture was generally conservative at mid-century, tied to notions of consensus and organicism. As Warren Susman has argued, the "general and even popular 'discovery' of the concept of culture" in the 1930s "could and did have results far more conservative than radical, no matter what the intentions of those who originally championed some of the ideas and efforts." Why did this change?1 One answer is that it didn't change. A number of recent writers on the left have argued that, despite the intentions of those who champion cultural studies, the cultural turn continues to have conservative results, marking a ~- 76 CULTURE IN THE AGE OF THREE WORLDS THE SOCIOANALYSIS OF CULTURE 77 slide away from politics and an uncritical embrace of the market's own a.ry American thought. -

The narrow band of concerns that formed the conventional focus in the study of translation behaviour has typically related almost exclusively to the authenticity of a given translation – evaluations of faithfulness and of whether translations were ‘definitive’ (Bassnett and Lefevere 1990; Xie 2009; Dinçel 2012). Melkonyan2 1RUDN University (RUSSIAN FEDERATION) 2Yerevan State University (ARMENIA) Abstract The 21st century is the era demanding people to know two and more languages, which provide them with more opportunities in any sphere such as business, banking, diplomacy, medicine, etc. Thus, mastering a language, in any case, means being able to communicate effectively and interact with individuals representing other cultures and speaking other languages. Actually, this implies that the learner not only acquires language skills, but also becomes the carrier of the target-language culture. Consequently, foreign language teaching needs to introduce a more sophisticated approach towards the element of culture in the educational process. It is high time to recognize the importance of intercultural learning or interculturality in foreign language teaching as culture is an integral part of any language course and should be taught in parallel with the language from the very first steps. The cultural component has always been one of the most essential dimensions of intercultural language teaching and is based on the following principles: awareness of one’s own culture; study of the target-language culture; comparison of the cultures under consideration. Keywords: cultural component; foreign language teaching; interculturality; target-language culture; communication, language skills. 1 INTRODUCTION Learning a foreign language becomes a kind of enculturation, where one acquires new cultural frames of reference and a new world view, reflecting those of the target language culture and its speakers [1]. The process of language teaching and learning has always been in the scope of attention of educators as the acquired language knowledge is a successful tool for building communication, enlarging horizons, gaining more sophisticated new knowledge and sharing it. -

The rise of the ‘cultural turn’ has breathed new life into the practice of international history over the past few decades. Cultural approaches have both broadened and deepened interpretations of the history of international relations. This article focuses on the use of culture as an explanatory methodology in the study of international history. It outlines the two central criticisms often made of this approach. The first is that it suffers from a lack of analytical rigour in both defining what culture is and understanding how it shapes individual and collective policy decisions. The second is that it too often leads to a tendency to exaggerate the importance of the cultural predispositions of individual or collective actors at the expense of the wider structures within which policymaking takes place. -

Soon, however, critique was raised against these studies’ conceptualization of the body as discursively shaped and socially disciplined: individual bodily agency and feeling were felt to be absent in the idea of the material body. This article critically analyzes new approaches in the field of body history, particularly the so-called “material turn”. It argues that the material turn, especially in the guise of praxiography, has a lot to offer historians of the body, such as more attention to material practices, to different kinds of actors and a more open eye to encounters. Potential problems of praxiographical analyses of the body in history include the complicated relationship between discourses and practices and the neglect of the political and feminist potential of deconstructive discourse analyses. However, a focus on the relationship between practices of knowledge production and the representation of the body may also provide new ways of opening up historical power relations. -

In the period when the new Left was at the height of its influence, culture was frequently reduced to ideology, a mere reflection of material, especially economic, circumstances, and its content ignored. Despite the opposition of thinkers like Raymond Williams, economic determinism and vulgar materialism were common. Few registered the necessary hermeneutic dimension of social science, since few saw that meaning could be constitutive and not merely reflective of social practice. The shift to a treatment of culture centering on signifying practices (Hall, 1997) and meaning as performative as well as denotative required its meanings to be interpreted. -

Diese Gruppen, die hier als urbane soziale Bewegungen verstanden werden, haben das Ziel, sich ein gerechtes und egalitäres städtisches Leben zu erkämpfen. Dieser Kampf wird hier durch die Idee des „Rechts auf Stadt“ repräsentiert. Dieses Konzept wurde erstmals von dem französischen Soziologen Henri Lefebvre nach den Ereignissen und Demonstrationen im Mai 1968 in mehreren europäischen Städten, die einen Meilenstein in der Geschichte des 20. Jahrhunderts dargestellt haben, ausgearbeitet. Diese Bewegungen suchten unter anderem nach Lösungen für die existenzielle Krise, die vor allem in städtischen Umgebungen herrschte und die das auf den Idealen des keynesianischen Staates basierende politisch-ökonomische System nicht mehr lösen konnte. Der Staat wurde zunehmend geschwächt und seine Unfähigkeit, die Probleme der Bevölkerung zu lösen, gibt der Marktwirtschaft – durch das Finanzkapital – die Macht, die Organisation der Gesellschaft zu verwalten und zu lenken. Hierin beginnt die Ära der Vorherrschaft des Kapitals, der Marktwirtschaft und damit der Privatinitiative, die von dem als Neoliberalismus bekannten Diskurs von Wohlstand und Freiheit getragen wird. -

Some main elements included in the broader concept of cultural turn are examined: the linguis- tic turn connected with constructivist philosophy and based on linguistic analysis; the iconic turn that points out the pictorial side of communication and the spatial turn devoted to the study of geographical space in which social action takes place. All these strands were strongly influenced by cultural anthropology emerging in the Six- ties. These different approaches to political history may be useful instruments for the understanding of political phenomena. Keywords: Political History, Cultural Turn, Linguistic Turn, Iconic Turn, Spatial Turn. Political history has long had a well-deserved reputation for being the most conservative branch of history. Big men, strong ideas and a clear preference for decisions at the expense of processes were the main characteristics of this kind of history.
