The Debert Coal Mine operated from 1903 until 1910, and was reopened briefly in 1936, producing 5,472 tons. To the Honourable Charles Tupper, provincial secretary. In the 'Journal and Proceedings of the House of Assembly Session 1858', Halifax, N.S. 1858. Leather spine with marbled paper boards. Pages 278 to 332. Quarto. 11.25 x 9.5 inches (28.5 x 24 cm). Covers have extreme wear with a few pieces of leather missing from the spine, interior very good. $75.00 James Laurie was a co-founder and the first President of the American Society of Civil Engineers. He was born in Bells Quarry near Edinburgh, Scotland, May 9, 1811. He apprenticed in an office that made mathematical and engineering instruments in Bells Quarry until 1832. In that same year, along with James P. Kirkwood, he left Scotland for the United States. They both worked as engineers for the Norwich & Worchester Railroad in Boston, Massachusetts until 1835, at which time Laurie became chief engineer. In 1853 Laurie became chief engineer for the Nova Scotia Railway, in which capacity he reported to the government of Nova Scotia. As part of his responsibilities, he extended the railway in 1859-1860. The Nova Scotia Railway is a historic Canadian railway. It was composed of two lines, one connecting Richmond (immediately north of Halifax) with Windsor, the other connecting Richmond with Pictou Landing via Truro. The railway was incorporated March 31, 1853 and received a charter to build railway lines from Halifax to Pictou by way of Truro, as well as from Halifax to Victoria Beach, Nova Scotia on the Annapolis Basin opposite Digby by way of Windsor. The company also received a charter to build from Truro to the border with New Brunswick. The railway was a key project of the visionary Nova Scotian leader Joseph Howe who felt a government built railway led by Nova Scotia was necessary after the failure of the talks and several fruitless private proposals. The railway line to Windsor (known as the Windsor Branch) was opened in June 1858 and the line to Truro (known as the Eastern Line) was opened in December 1858. No further work was undertaken on the line to Victoria Beach beyond Windsor but the Eastern Line to Pictou Landing was completed by June 1867, under the supervision of Sir Sandford Fleming. The construction of the Nova Scotia Railway by the colonial government was partly encouraged by the construction failures and ongoing delays in building the Shubenacadie Canal. The success of the railway came at the expense of the canal which opened in 1861, but soon fell into disrepair from lack of use (and because the rail bridges over the canal were too low for the steamers on the canal). One noteworthy early feature of operations on the Nova Scotia Railway was the first known case of intermodal operations involving the "piggyback" transport of road vehicles on railway cars. Farmers in the Windsor area were able to drive their teams of horses and loaded wagons onto railway cars and be transported into Halifax to sell their loads, returning to Windsor the same day. On July 1, 1867, ownership of the NSR was passed from the Government of Nova Scotia to the Government of Canada.

Published prospectus with illustration of ‘Sideview Drilling Plant – Derrick 75 feet height.’ Quarter page advertisement in the Sept. 19th and Oct. 3, 1912 edition of the Berwick, N.S. Register newspaper. Folded with wear to folds. $475.00 for the lot The initial period of oil exploration in Nova Scotia concentrated primarily in the Lake Ainslie, Inverness County, Cape Breton. The first drilling activity was conducted by the Lake Ainslie Pioneer Oil & Salt Company between 1865 and 1875. After this there was limited activity in Nova Scotia until 1909 when oil was discovered at Stoney Creek, New Brunswick. This discovery stimulated further explorations in both provinces. The most active period was between 1912 and 1914 and was conducted by the Maritime Oil & Gas Company, Ltd. at North Lake Ainslie, Inverness County. Five holes were reported drilled with a sixth well proposed and about to be started. These were all located within one square mile north of Doherty Cove about one mile east of the Dunbar farm turn off on the Scotsville Road. It was reported that oil sands and natural gas were encountered in all the holes and that oil flowed from one well. However, there is no further information about the history and success of the Maritime Oil & Gas Company after 1914.

47. Torbett, Charles W. Three 19th century proposed Nova Scotia canals. Proposed Canal from St. Peters Bay to Bras D’Or Lake, from Bay Vert to Cumberland Basin and the Shubenacadie Canal Line. Printed & Published by Joseph Howe, Halifax, N.S. 1829. 2 canals are 4 x 7 inches (10.2 x 18 cm) and the Shubenacadie is 4 x 10 inches (10.2 x 36.8 cm). Drawn and Engraved by C.W. Torbett for Haliburton’s “Historical and Statistical Account of Nova Scotia” published in 1829. Some very light off-setting to the St. Peters canal and wear to the printed title on the bottom. Three light creases to the Shubenacadie canal due to folding. General condition to all three is very good. [for all three] $225.00 Charles W. Torbett (active 1810-1842) was an artist and engraver who worked in Halifax from around 1810 to 1833. As well as engaging in the production of book-plates, maps, portraits, treasury notes, book illustrations and silver designs, he did all of the engravings and some of the drawings for Haliburton’s “Historical and Statistical Account of Nova Scotia” published in Halifax by Joseph Howe in 1829. He also engraved plans and portraits for drawings by John G. Toler. The Shubenacadie Canal is a canal in central Nova Scotia, linking Halifax Harbour with the Bay of Fundy by way of the Shubenacadie River and Shubenacadie Grand Lake. It was begun in 1826, it was not completed until 1861 and was closed in 1871. The canal from Bay Vert to Cumberland Basin was never built. However in the mid- 1880s, the isthmus was also the site of one of Canada's earliest mega-projects: construction of a broad-gauge railway from the port of Amherst to the Northumberland Strait at Tidnish for carrying small cargo and passenger ships. This ship railway was never successfully operational, and construction was abandoned shortly before completion. A feasibility study was conducted in 1825 into the possibility of building of the St. Petters canal and construction began in 1854 and was completed in 1869. The St. Peters Canal is the only working canal of national historic significance in and an important historic landmark for the Village of St. Peter's and for Cape Breton Island.

They became arguably the most famous of the Canadian Army "concert parties," those entertainment units that were devoted to building the morale of the troops on the front lines. The Dumbells were synonymous with the name Plunkett their creator and leader, Captain Merton (Mert) Plunkett, and his brother, Corporal Al Plunkett, who sang and acted with the group from its inception. Comedian and singer Red Newman was the only original member of the Dumbells who was not born in Canada. Originally from Dover, England, Newman later moved to Swift Current, Saskatchewan. He served with the Canadian Army during the First World War in France, becoming a star with the Y Emmas concert party before being seconded to the Dumbells in July 1918. He toured with the Dumbells in Canada and the United States from 1919, and by June 1922 was making recordings of his Dumbells' successes with His Master's Voice, including "I'm a Daddy," and "Oh! Start the War Again."
