Milodowskib 4 a British Geological Survey, Maclean Building, Wallingford, OX10 8BB, UK, email: [email protected] 5 b British Geological Survey, Nicker Hill, Keyworth, Nottingham, NG12 5GG, UK 6 * Corresponding author 7 Abstract 8 The Lower Cretaceous Continental Intercalaire of North Africa is a terrestrial to shallow marine 9 continental wedge deposited along the southern shoreline of the Neotethys Ocean. Today it has a wide 10 distribution across the northern Sahara where it has enormous socio-economic importance as a major 11 freshwater aquifer. During the Early Cretaceous major north-south trending basement structures were 12 reactivated in response to renewed Atlantic rifting and in Algeria, faults along the El Biod-Hassi 13 Messaourd Ridge appear to have been particularly important in controlling thickness patterns of the 14 Lower Cretaceous Continental Intercalaire. Subsurface data from the Krechba gas field in Central Algeria 15 shows that the Lower Cretaceous stratigraphy is subdivided into two clear parts. The lower part (here 16 termed the In Salah Formation) is a 200 m thick succession of alluvial deposits with large meandering 17 channels, clearly shown in 3D seismic, and waterlogged flood basins indicated by lignites and gleyed, 18 pedogenic mudstones. The overlying Krechba Formation is a 500 m thick succession of quartz- 19 dominated sands and sandstones whose microstructure indicates an aeolian origin, confirming earlier 20 observations from outcrop.

    Seaports of the World Seaports of the World by Country Seaports of the World by UN/LOCODE The following is a listing of 835 of the most active seaports and inland ports in the world. Several thousand additional ports exist yet more than 99 percent of the world's trade moves through these ports. We have omitted fishing ports and small ports that primarily handle private pleasure craft. Arrangement of Listings Listings are in alpha sequence by country and then by port. We also include: UN/LOCODE, Latitude and Longitude, GMT Offset, Telephone and Web URL (as available). UN/LOCODE UN/LOCODE is the acronym for United Nations Code for Trade and Transport Locations. It is a geographic coding system developed by the UNECE (United Nations Economic Commission for Europe) for more than 40,000 locations worldwide. The UN/LOCODE is a combination of a 2-character country code and a three character location code. The first two digits refer to the country location based on the ISO 3166 alpha-2 Country Code. Refer to the Country Codes section for a complete listing of country codes. The next three characters are normally three letters and refer to a specific location in the country. In some cases, where the letter options have been exhausted, the numerals 2-9 may be used. All 40,000 UN/LOCODEs can be found at www.unece.org/cefact/locode/service/main.htm.     SITUATIONAL ANALYSIS: KILWA KISIWANI WORLD HERITAGE SITE Development Bank of Southern Africa and African World Heritage Fund February 2009 Source: Author’s photograph, January 2009 1 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Kilwa Kisiwani is a remarkable cultural World Heritage Site (WHS) off the South- East coast of Tanzania. The development of the site has been supported in recent years by the upgrading of transport infrastructure to the district of Kilwa, and rehabilitation and interpretation work at the sites of Kilwa Kisiwani and Songa Mnara. Commitment to development from both government and donors now places Kilwa Kisiwani and the Kilwa District in a favourable position to benefit from tourism. With the completion of the tarred road connecting Kilwa to Dar es Salaam likely in the short-term, tourism to the area will undoubtedly grow. Although the increases in tourism are not going to be immediately dramatic, the medium term could see Kilwa included in a growing ‘Southern Circuit’ of tourism destinations in Tanzania. In order to ensure that the tourism development of the World Heritage Site and the district occurs in a manner that creates an excellent visitor experience, while benefitting local communities, both on the island and mainland, a deliberate design and structuring of the tourism experience is necessary. This will lead to the economic value of the sites becoming evident and will instill a vested interest in protection of the sites amongst beneficiaries. It will also help establish Kilwa as a must-see destination. First and foremost, appropriate development of the site and the broader area requires coordination and organisation of the many stakeholders who already have been, and wish to be, part of the development effort in the area.
