ANNUAL MEMBER COUNTRY REPORT

Country: < MYANMAR > Period: 1 July 2016 – 30 June 2017

1. OUTREACH 1.1. Summary The Department of Geological Survey and Mineral Exploration (DGSE) is trying to achieve public awareness on knowledge of landslide, and Geohazard investigation works done in respective regions, updating mineral database and joint survey with foreign and local companies for mineral exploration. MOGE is enhancing oil and gas exploration, exploitation and LNG supply for domestic requirement. Groundwater Division is also operating the systematic management on sustainability of ground water resources.

1.2. Annual Review of Individual Technical Activities in 2016-2017 1.2.1. Regional mapping Geological Mapping (1: 50000) scale covering 1344 Km2 has been completed in Falam-Titein area, Chin State and 722 km2 in Ye U - Budalin Townships, Sagaing Region. Three localities of mineral occurrences such as Coal, Graphite and Gold were recorded.

1.2.2 Mineral Exploration Mineral Exploration programs were carried out at Region, Magwe Region, Sagaing Region and Kayin State for Coal, Graphite and Gold. The program consists of detailed geological mapping, topographic survey, test pitting, trenching, sampling and drilling in some prospects.

Coal Exploration The geological mapping about 410 kmk 2, detailed outcrop mapping of 25km2 and total 299000 metric ton of sub-biituminous coal reserves ware estimated in Myaung U-Kyaukpon area, Magwe Region. At Thinpaung area, Khin U Township in Sagaing Region, geological mapping about 533 km2 and detailed outcrop mapping of 2 kkm2 were completed. Drilling program has also planed for coal reserve estimation.

At Kyaukket area, Myawaddy Township, Kayin State, the geological mapping about 7 km2 and diamond drill holes (3 holes) with total depth 150 meters were accomplished and coal reserves were estimated to be 56925 metric tons.

1.2.2.2. Graphite Exploration The graphite exploration in Wabyu Taung – Kyatsaung taung area, Township, including regional geological mapping about 22.5 km2, detailed outcrop mapping 15.439 km2and diamond drilling (11 holes) with total depth in 652.99 meters were completed. The ore reserves were estimated to be 85549.07 Metric tons.

1.2.2.3. Gold Exploration The gold exploration in Pyinma Taung–Kogwe chaung area, , Mandalay Region included regional geological mapping about 50.81 km2, detailed outcrop mapping 2.49 km2were carried out. The chemical assay results indicate that Au content is very low and no further exploration was recommended for this year.

1.3. Proposed Future Activities DGSE has planned to carry out the following field activities in 2017-2018. 1.3.1. Regional mapping program DGSE will conduct regional geological mapping about 1428 km2 at Budalin – Ye U area, Sagaing Region. 1.3.2. Mineral Exploration DGSE has also planned for the mineral exploration works during 2017- 2018 as follows; (1) Coal exploration at Mindon area, Magwe Region (2) Coal exploration at Ngape area, Magwe Region. (3) Graphite exploration at Waphyu taung-Kyatsaung taung area, Mandalay Region.

1.4. Assistance Required from CCOP/Other Member Countries in Support of Future Activities - Request for post-graduate scholarships in Geosciences and Geotechnical Engineering for the Human Resources Development (HRD). - Request for Geological, Geochemical, and Geophysical Training abroad as well as short course training in Myanmar. - Request for training on the application of remote sensing in geological mapping. - Request Grant Aid program for the training and upgrading of DGSE laboratory.

1.5. Assistance Offered to CCOP/Other Member Countries in Support of Future Activities - Cooperation and coordination with CCOP member counties in future activities. - Sharing experience on geological mapping and mineral exploration works.

CCOP Member Country Report: 5 2. COOPERATION AND PARTNERSHIP (Activities for enhancing networking and effective collaboration)

2.1 Summary DGSE is cooperating in the field of geosciences with the international organizations including KIGAM, JICA, JOGMEC, GSJ, CLMTV, DMR and foreign exploration companies in mineral exploration, mineral resources database, mineral information, seamless geology and human resources development.

2.2 Annual Review of Individual Technical Activities 2.2.1. Co-operation with KIGAM, Korea Department of Geological Survey and Mineral Exploration (DGSE) and Korea Institute of Geosciences and Mineral Resources (KIGAM) have signed the Research Agreement for the study of chromite mineralization and resources estimation at Bophivum area, Chin State on 28th March 2013. From July 2016 to October 2016, DGSE and KIGAM field parties carried out geological and geochemical studies, detailed geological mapping, drilling of 12 diamond drill holes (total depth 600 meters),drill core logging and recalculating of the ore reserve in 12 square kilometer of target exploration in Bophivum chromite mineralized area. In 2017 May, both parties made a joint field trip again and completed the 3D topographic survey using drone in 24.5 square kilometers wide area for further 3D Geological Modeling.

CCOP Member Country Report: 7 2.2.2. Cooperation with JOGMEC, Japan Joint survey team of DGSE and JOGMEC has conducted preliminary investigation of antimony, copper, gold, tin-tungsten and Rare Earth Elements (REE) at Shan and Kayah States, Mandalay and Sagaing Regions. 3 years extension period, 1st April 2016 to 31st March 2019 of the agreement was signed on 29.7.2016 by the approval of Government office.

2.2.3. Cooperation with Geological Survey of Finland (GTK) A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for "the Sustainable Development of Mineral Resources in Myanmar (SUSMIN Project)" was signed on 17th March 2014, between Department of Geological Survey and Mineral Exploration (DGSE) and Geological Survey of Finland (GTK). According to the MoU, GTK has organized GIS training and using GIS techniques in field works to DGSE staffs. Geological database, mineral database and mine leased database training programs are ongoing processes up to December 2016. Now DGSE staffs are on going to conduct 1:50000 scale geological map by using GIS techniques.

2.2.4. CLMTV Project Seamless Geology and DMR The CLMTV collaboration among the five countries (Cambodia-Lao PDR-Myanmar-Thailand-Vietnam) meeting aims to collect and update geological information, between boundaries of the five countries and share among the members. As CLMTV cross-border collaboration, Myanmar (DGSE)-Thailand (DMR and CCOP) activities, joint field party have done geological field survey in selected project areas which are Mae Sai-Tachileik area, Maesot- Myawaddy area and Dawei-Kachanaburi area between July and August, 2016. Joint field party correlated the more details of geology and structural geology in study area to correlate data between Thailand and Myanmar. The field party of DGSE-DMR-GIT and Kasetsart University team visited to Mandalay, , Naypyitaw, Kyaikhto area including the places of Gem Museums, Gemtone Markets, Geological Rock Garden, during 30.3.2017 to 4.4.2017. DGSE-DMR joint survey team carried out the preliminary investigation on Corundum mineralization in Yatkansin Taung area during 30th

March - 4th April 2017. There can be achieved the effective data of cooperation between DGSE and DMR joint field works based on "Comparative Study on Mineral Potential". It is one of the activities of collaboration in Geosciences among “Comparative Study on Mineralization of Gemstone in CLMTV Region” from 2016 to 2019.

CCOP Member Country Report: 9 2.2.5. MoU with Geological Survey of Japan (GSJ) The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between DGSE and GSJ was signed on 16th June 2015 for the cooperation in Geoscience and Mineral Resources sector. Joint field survey was done at the Tannintharyi Region, Southern part of Myanmar for the potential of Tin-Tungsten and Rare Earth Elements (REE) in late 2015 and at the Kyaington and Tachileik, Shan State for study of gold, copper mineralization system in 2016.

2.2.6 The 68th CCOP Steering Committee Meeting in Myanmar Myanmar became a member country in Coordinating Committee for Geoscience Programmes in East and Southeast Asia on 24.3.2015. Myanmar hosted 68th CCOP Steering Committee Meeting at the Grand Amara Hotel in Naypyitaw, Myanmar on 7-9 March 2017. The Meeting was attended by delegates of the following Member Countries (MC): Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Japan, Republic of Korea, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand, Philippines and Vietnam. The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) attended the meeting as an observer. The Union Minister, H.E. U Ohn Winn, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation addressed the welcome remarks. At the meeting it was decided to cooperate intensively among the CCOP member countries in the fields of Geoscience, mineral and energy sector, ground water, environmental conservation and risk of natural hazard management. CCOP member country delegates visited excursion to Mandalay and studied along active Sagaing Fault System and sightseeing famous places around Mandalay in 9-11 March 2017.

2.2.7. Joint venture mineral exploration with Foreign Companies. The companies from Australia, Canada, China, Korea, Japan and Thailand have applied for mineral exploration rights in Myanmar for Gold, Copper, Lead, Zinc, Tin-Tungsten, and Coal. Currently six foreign companies have been granted mineral exploration permits in Myanmar and exploration works are being undertaken with DGSE.

2.3. Proposed Future Activities DGSE is on going process with KIGAM for the study of chromite mineralization and resources estimation, and with JOGMEC for mineral exploration from 1st April 2016 to 31st March 2019. The mineralization of corundum and geo-hazard related to active fault and landslides have studied with DMR from 2016 to 2021. Seamless geological survey along the cross border with CLMTV are also proposed for future activities.

2.4. Assistance Required from CCOP in Support of Future Activities Technical assistances and financial supporting in cooperative projects and joint studies are needed.

2.5. Assistance Offered to CCOP/Other Member Countries in Support of Future Activities DGSE can share the technical reports and information, conference papers to CCOP and other member countries.

3. DATA AND INFORMATION / KNOWLEDGE ENHANCEMENT AND SHARING 3.1 GEO-HAZARD PROGRAMME 3.1.1 Summary During late 2016 to mid 2017, Department of Geological Survey and Mineral Exploration (DGSE) and International Consortium on Landslides (ICL) Japan have carried out geological investigation of potential landslide area including Taunggyi city in Shan State, Kyaikhtiyo pagoda in Mon State and Hakha area in Chin State.

3.1.2 Annual Review of Individual Technical Activities Department of Geological Survey and Mineral Exploration (DGSE) and ICL have carried out geological investigation of potential landslide area and also recommended to Regional Government Organization and local communities for future prevention and mitigation of geo-hazard events.

3.1.2.1. International Consortium on Landslides (ICL), Japan Landslide Investigation in Myanmar International Consortium on Landslides (ICL) group conducted for landslide investigation in Taunggyi area, Kyaikhtiyo pagoda area and Haka area, Myanmar in cooperation with the Department of Geology Survey and Mineral Exploration (DGSE). The main objective is to propose a new Myanmar-Japan Joint Project on "Understanding and Reducing Landslide Disaster Risk in Myanmar" to the SATREPS (Science and Technology Research Partnerships for Sustainable Development) which is financially supported by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST). The objective of SATREPS is to develop new science and technology to solve the global issue including landslide

CCOP Member Country Report: 15 disaster risk reduction by the cooperation between developing countries and Japan. Taunggyi urban area has developed on the Terrace above a fault cliff. Past landslides, developing landslides, debris flows and landslide risk can be found in this area. Detailed investigation is needed to avoid landslide disaster due to heavy rain/ earthquakes, … etc.

3.1.3. Proposed Future Activities Proposed future activities are cooperation study on not only landslides investigation and mitigation but also events of potential earthquake in Myanmar.

3.1.4. Assistance Required from CCOP in Support of Future Activities - Workshop or training course related to landslide investigation and earthquake in CCOP member countries. - To promote exchange of information in the field of geo-hazards management and international cooperation network on geo-hazards prevention and mitigation.

3.1.5. Assistance Offered to CCOP/ Other Member Countries in Support of Future Activities DGSE can share some kinds of data for geo-hazard effected areas in Myanmar to compare such like other CCOP member countries.

3.2. ENERGY PROGRAMME 3.2.1. Summary During the period of (1.7.2016 to 30.6.2017), Ministry of Electricity and Energy continued enhancing onshore and offshore oil and gas exploration and exploitation, and studied the LNG supply for future domestic requirement.

3.2.2. Annual Review of Individual Technical Activities

3.2.2.1. Oil and Gas Exploration and Production Activities During the reviewed period, no petroleum contracts were signed for Onland blocks. There are 24 blocks of previously signed 26 Onland Petroleum contracts namely PSC, IPR, PCC are currently in operation. A total of 943.03 km lines of 2D and 1210.039 km2 of 3D seismic data were acquired, 25 exploration and development wells were drilled. 2.45 million bl of oil and 17.6 bcf of gas were produced from 18 oil and gas fields.

3.2.2.2. Offshore Oil and Gas Exploration and Production Activities During the reviewed period, no PSC contracts were signed for offshore blocks. PSC contracts in 38 offshore blocks have been signed and 16 blocks of previously signed 38 offshore blocks of PSC contracts are currently in operation. A total of 3202 km lines of 2D and 5366 km2, of 3D seismic data were acquired; 27 exploration and development wells were drilled and 2 new gas discoveries have been identified. 1.78 million bl of oil and 650 bcf of gas were produced from 4 offshore gas fields.

3.2.2.3. LNG Project Two existing out of 4 offshore projects are currently declined and LNG import is considered to meet the domestic requirement until production from new discovery in Myanmar offshore region. Therefore LNG companies were invited to submit EOI (Expression of interest) to Ministry of Electricity and Energy. Five locations for large scale FSRU (Floating Storage Regasification Unit) and one location for mid-scale FSRU (Floating Storage Regasification Unit) are studied to store and distribute LNG and the most suitable one will be selected very soon. All technical and commercial assistance are provided by World Bank.

3.2.3. Proposed Future Activity Tender process for LNG import is going to be launched very soon.

CCOP Member Country Report: 19 3.3. GROUNDWATER PROGRAMME 3.3.1. Summary Groundwater Division of Irrigation and Water Utilization Management Department (Water Resources) under the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation is one of the key groundwater related institution in Myanmar. The major implementing groundwater development works are deep and shallow tube well drilling, hydrogeological investigation, hydrogeological mapping, geophysical investigation and water quality analysis.

3.3.2 Annual Review of Individual Technical Activities 3.3.2.1. Groundwater Tubewells Drilling Achievement In (2016-2017) fiscal year, the total groundwater tubewells drilled for agricultural water supply and drinking water supply are showing in the following tables –

3.3.2.2. Geophysical Investigation Surface geophysical investigation The total of (4) areas were surveyed by Ground geophysical investigation.

1. Nay Pyi Taw Area 2. Yangon Region 3. Mandalay Region 4. Kayin State the method used in the investigation is Vertical Electrical Sounding (VES) by SAS1000 Terrameter.

Subsurface geophysical investigation The total of (20) tube wells were surveyed before setting up the casing and screen of tube well by sub-surface geophysical investigation. (Geophysical Bore Hole Logging) including resistivity, gamma and spontaneous potential (SP).

3.3.2.3 Establishment of Groundwater monitoring stations The total of (9) groundwater monitoring stations with pressure transducers (Solinst Level loggers) were established with manual data downloading system in (2016-2017) fiscal year. The regular data collection and observation report will carry out international report based on three parameters such as Conductivity (EC), groundwater level and temperature. The extension of 16 groundwater monitoring stations will install in (2017-2018) fiscal year by using government budget.

3.3.2.4. Water quality analysis laboratory Irrigation and Water Utilization Management Department (Water Resources) established the water quality testing laboratory at Yangon. Previously it is aimed to conduct water quality for drinking purpose but now it is also

CCOP Member Country Report: 23 testing for agricultural water quality. A unit of Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS) has installed 2010 for testing heavy elements. The total of (353) groundwater samples were tested in (2016-2017) fiscal year.

3.3.2.5. International collaborations in groundwater research The total of (30) groundwater tubewells information related to hydrogeology was supported to CCOP for open source website. Besides, collaboration with International Water Management Institute (IWMI) and Australian Water Partnership (AWP), the study of Hydrogeology and Hydrochemistry of Central Dry Zone, Myanmar was carried out. The international publication for this research is in progress and funded by AWP. In addition State of Basin Report (SOBA)for the whole Ayeyarwaddy River Basin project collaboration between National Water Resources Committee and IWMI is also prepared by using office data and field data.

3.3.3. Proposed Future Activities The followings are the proposed future activities; 1. Country level, basin wise estimation for groundwater balance 2. Extension of groundwater monitoring stations in necessary areas 3. Water quality monitoring in heavy groundwater extracted areas 4. Hydrogeological mapping for the whole country 5. Finding the new groundwater prospect areas 6. Construction of Groundwater Database Management System using Geospatial Technology

3.3.4. Assistance Required from CCOP/Other Member Countries in Support of Future Activities - Request for technical support including training, workshop, seminar and scholarship for hydrogeology and groundwater engineering.

3.3.5. Assistance offered to CCOP/Other Member Countries in Support of Future Activities - Cooperation and Coordination with CCOP/Other member countries in the future.

4. DATA AND INFORMATION 4.1. Summary The GIS laboratory of DGSE has carried out digitizing 1:50000 scale geological map sheets after completion of GIS training course conducted by GTK. In addition, ASEAN Web-based mineral resources database training program led by GSJ including workshop at Nay Pyi Taw and field trip investigation at Tachileik area have been carried out with the aid of JICA.

Annual Review of Individual Technical Activities After completion of GIS training course with the MoU between DGSE-GTK, Finland, DGSE has established GIS Lab and now carrying out 1:50000 scale geological map sheet and data entry for mineral occurrences. - The workshop on ASEAN Web-based Mineral Resources Database was held on 15th August 2016 and ASEAN delegates also participated field visit to Tachileik area, Eastern Shan State for ASEAN seamless Geological Mapping program on 20th - 24th August 2016. - Under the ASEAN Mineral Database Programme, a new database system is being discussed before uploading data/information into a Web GIS system.

4.3. Proposed Future Activities Joint ASEAN Seamless Geology ground field checking survey will carry out in Laos, on October 2017.

4.4. Assistance Required from CCOP in Support of Future Activities More training on Web-GIS are requested to JICA for better understanding of practical application.

4.5. Assistance Offered to CCOP/Other Member Countries in Support of Future Activities DGSE can share the ASEAN Web-based on mineral database, geoscience and geological information to CCOP Member Countries.
