    Christina Obiajulu Thesis January 032011 Lyrical Insight: Looking at Changes in AA VE through Slave Spirituals, Blues and Rap Abstract The purpose of this study was to test the validity of using song lyrics as a source of data to analyze AA VE trends. In this thesis I tracked prominent features in African American Vernacular English (AA VE) such as absence of a copula, verbal -s omission, and double negatives, from slavery to the present, while using song lyrics. I examined lyrics from slave spirituals (18th century), blues lyrics (1920s and 1930s) and current rap lyrics. I looked at music because it is a centerpiece of black culture and has been a constant vehicle of expression, unlike other forms of more traditionally used data. I tracked the rate of occurrence then compared the rates across the different genres. I found that -s omission seemed to be suppressed in blues lyrics, negative concord occurred in all three genres and that copula absence only appeared in rap lyrics. These findings were consistent with findings from previous studies (Bailey et al. (1989) Kortman (2004) and Pullum (1999), Myhill (1995),Bailey (1987),Wolfram (1969),Ash and Myhill (1986) Labov (1995), Poplack (2005), Rickford (1998; 1999) ), which used interviews, early slave recordings and manuscripts as sources for data collection. Because these findings reflect similar findings as my own, my hypothesis that songs can be an appropriate representation of trends in spoken AA VE, is supported. I. Introduction When one thinks of slavery, the first images that come to mind are those of oppression, injustice and a general failing of humanity.

Sound design in film, described as “sound editing viewed artistically or aesthetically in terms of the shaping of the sound track in a film” (Buhler 2009, 430), is by definition a creative process demanding from its producers a great deal of inventiveness and aural imagination. Surprisingly, if one assumes that creativity is the key to successful sound design, it seems that very few contemporary soundtracks can be called successful at all. The goal of this paper is to examine the art of sound produc- tion in Baz Luhrmann‘s The Great Gatsby (2013) in terms of its creative use of sound. The analysis will focus on scenes from the movie in which sound does more to the overall impression and interpretation of the film than merely confirmUMCS the story that is told. Meanings of sound sequences inThe Great Gatsby will be examined by in juxtaposition with selected plot elements. The sound in Luhrmann’s production is creative mostly because it serves unique and unexpected functions that make it different from what seems to be the usual cinematic practice. It correlates with images in an innovative way, plays with diegetic vs. non-diegetic distinction (which is applied in the score analysis), and creates certain sonic spaces through skillful editing. All these “subtle-but-meaningful cinemusical details” (Holbrook 2011, 252) allow for interpreting the film in contemporary contexts.
