No Church in the Wild
No Church in the wild Who was rubbin' the wood like Kiki Shepard Two tattoos, one read "no apologies" Human beings in a mob The other said "love is cursed by monogamy" What's a mob to a king? That's somethin' that the pastor don't preach What's a king to a god? That's somethin' that a teacher can't teach What's a god to a non-believer? When we die, the money we can't keep Who don't believe in anything? But we prolly spend it all 'cause the pain ain't cheap, preach We make it out alive All right, all right Human beings in a mob No church in the wild What's a mob to a king? What's a king to a god? Tears on the mausoleum floor What's a god to a non-believer? Blood stains the Coliseum doors Who don't believe in anything? Lies on the lips of a priest Thanksgiving disguised as a feast We make it out alive Rollin' in the Rolls-Royce Corniche All right, all right Only the doctors got this, I'm hidin' from police No church in the wild Cocaine seats No church in the wild All white like I got the whole thing bleached No church in the wild Drug dealer chic No church in the wild I'm wonderin' if a thug's prayers reach Is Pious pious 'cause God loves pious? Socrates asks, "whose bias do y'all seek?" All for Plato, screech I'm out chere' ballin', I know y'all hear my sneaks Jesus was a carpenter, Yeezy, laid beats Hova flow the Holy Ghost, get the hell up out your seats, preach Human beings in a mob What's a mob to a king? What's a king to a god? What's a god to a non-believer? Who don't believe in anything? We make it out alive All right, all right No church in the wild I live by you, desire I stand by you, walk through the fire Your love, is my scripture Let me into your encryption, yeah yeah Coke on her black skin made a stripe like a zebra I call that jungle fever You will not control the threesome Just roll the weed up until I get me some We formed a new religion No sins as long as there's permission' And deception is the only felony So never fuck nobody without tellin' me Sunglasses and Advil Last night was mad real Sun comin' up 5 a.m. -
9 Church in the Wild: Preaching in an Age of Americanized Secularization
9 CHURCH IN THE WILD: PREACHING IN AN AGE OF AMERICANIZED SECULARIZATION Jared E. Alcántara Trinity Evangelical Divinity School Deerfield, IL [email protected] Abstract Many pastors see firsthand the pervasiveness of biblical illiteracy in the church. In this paper, I argue that biblical illiteracy is symptomatic of a bigger issue: secularization. I unfold my argument by describing the phenomenon of secularization, discussing its effects in congregations, recommending four strategies for engaging secularization in our preaching, and asking “What resources are available to us in Scripture?” Introduction Human beings in a mob. What’s a mob to a king? What’s a king to a god? What’s a god to a non-believer? Who don’t believe in anything? We make it out alive. All right, all right. No church in the wild! These lyrics are the chorus to Jay-Z and Kanye West’s hit-song, “No Church in the Wild.” While this is probably the first paper in EHS history to frame its argument by quoting from rap moguls, the lyrics should at least give us pause. What Jay-Z and Kanye say about the church is serious. These lyrics confront us with what Mary McClintock Fulkerson calls a “wound in need of redress.”1 Wilderness is a provocative image, one that arrests and even troubles the imagination. According to Jay-Z and Kanye, the “wild” is the place where the “nonbeliever who don’t believe in anything” goes. It is the locus absconditis, a site of contestation outside the purview of right belief and holy living, a place where one lives out a life wholly different from the one we preach about in churches. -

First, I must thank my thesis director, Dr. Barry Faulk, for his constant and extremely constructive guidance through multiple drafts of this project—and also his tolerance of receiving drafts and seeing me in his office less than a week later. Dr. Michael Buchler’s extensive knowledge of music theory, and his willingness to try out a new genre, have led to stimulating and thought provoking discussions, which have shaped this paper in many ways.
