by Cpl. Rick Spaulding

The Sport of the '805 is what triathlon events are being called. It takes stamina and guts to finish, let alone win an event like this. A question common to all triathlon discussions in, "How did it all start?" The whole thing was kicked off Icy an argument that took place between a swimmer, a bicyclist and a marathon runner at a pub in Hawaii. 'wording to Maj. Ronald G. FIrogdon, 1st Marine Division assistant communication electronic officer. The swimmer stated it took long, hard hours using every muscle in the body to swim and that was more a measure of one's physical fitness than other sports. The bicyclist disagreed. With long distance bicycle races, which sometimes took several days to complete, they were by far the most demanding of all athletic events, he declared. The marathon runner didn't agree with either of them. He said that running involves a discipline unmatched by the other two sports. After more discussion, a challenge was issued. "Why don't we combine these three events into a tri-athletic competition and see who is right?" They decided to hold a two4lay, muscle. grinding event which would consist of a 2.4 mile swim, a 112 mile bicycle race and a 26.2 marathon race. There were 11 men in a race that would be the birth of triathlons. Triathletes like Brogdon believe that these bone-jarring competitions prove that running has its limitations ... triathlons are fun.
