Last but not least, I dedicate this work to my parents, Ma Jianguo 马建国 and Li Zhihui 李智慧 , and my wife Tong Tong 童彤 , for their unconditional love and their enormous support of my research and study. ii ABSTRACT The term male dan in this dissertation refers to the male actors who specialize in dan roles or female roles in jingju (Beijing/Peking “opera”). Female actors who act female roles are called female dan in this study. Male dan were instrumental in the development of jingju, beginning with the origin of this art form in the late eighteenth century . The socialist government that established the People’s Republic of China in 1949 had a negative attitude toward cross- gender performances, viewing them as the products of a feudal society; female dan artists who inherited the male dan legacy therefore became predominant in dan role performance after 1949. Public xiqu (Chinese “opera”/traditional Chinese theatre) training schools established in the 1950s did not accept male dan students. During the Cultural Revolution (1966–1976), male dan who trained before 1949 almost disappeared from the stage. In the post-Cultural Revolution era (1976 to the present), the official attitude toward male dan has not been explicitly conveyed or implicitly suggested by the Party: this ambiguous attitude neither actively supports nor restricts the development of male dan . Starting in the late 1970s, male dan who had been trained before 1949 gradually returned to the stage. However, xiqu training schools remained closed to male dan. In addition to the lingering political sensitivity of male dan development, the social prejudice toward gender and sexual minorities was also a critical obstacle hindering the development of male dan , who were therefore stigmatized both morally and politically . After the 2000s, an increasingly open political and social environment allowed for the emergence of new male dan who explored various training and performance opportunities. Through the combined efforts of male dan and male dan advocates, a few of the new male dan were accepted by jingju training schools and state-run jingju troupes. Successfully established new male dan pursued the male dan identity by negotiating with various institutional and social obstacles and enhanced iii their male dan identity by cautiously adhering to the male dan tradition created by male dan masters both onstage and offstage. One of the crucial factors in the success of these new male dan is the belief shared among male dan and male dan advocates that male dan performance has its unique values and characteristics which cannot be replicated by female dan. Unlike female dan , who may have to make a fair amount of adjustment to adapt the stylized vocal and physical performance skills and techniques created by male dan to their own circumstances, in the process of imitative learning, male dan may imitate much more directly. In dan role performance, male dan are believed to have more potential for approaching the ideal, refined and stylized beauty established by the male dan tradition.     Performing Shakespeare in Contemporary Taiwan by Ya-hui Huang A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment for the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Central Lancashire Jan 2012 Abstract Since the 1980s, Taiwan has been subjected to heavy foreign and global influences, leading to a marked erosion of its traditional cultural forms. Indigenous traditions have had to struggle to hold their own and to strike out into new territory, adopt or adapt to Western models. For most theatres in Taiwan, Shakespeare has inevitably served as a model to be imitated and a touchstone of quality. Such Taiwanese Shakespeare performances prove to be much more than merely a combination of Shakespeare and Taiwan, constituting a new fusion which shows Taiwan as hospitable to foreign influences and unafraid to modify them for its own purposes. Nonetheless, Shakespeare performances in contemporary Taiwan are not only a demonstration of hybridity of Westernisation but also Sinification influences. Since the 1945 Kuomintang (Chinese Nationalist Party, or KMT) takeover of Taiwan, the KMT’s one-party state has established Chinese identity over a Taiwan identity by imposing cultural assimilation through such practices as the Mandarin-only policy during the Chinese Cultural Renaissance in Taiwan. Both Taiwan and Mainland China are on the margin of a “metropolitan bank of Shakespeare knowledge” (Orkin, 2005, p. 1), but it is this negotiation of identity that makes the Taiwanese interpretation of Shakespeare much different from that of a Mainlanders’ approach, while they share certain commonalities that inextricably link them. This study thus examines the interrelation between Taiwan and Mainland China operatic cultural forms and how negotiation of their different identities constitutes a singular different Taiwanese Shakespeare from Chinese Shakespeare.

Hung Liu: Offerings will be on view from January 23 through March 17, 2013. The opening reception takes place on Wednesday, January 23, 2013 from 6:00–8:00 pm and free shuttle service will be provided from the MacArthur Bart station during the opening. Recognized as America's most important Chinese artist, Hung Liu’s installations have played a central role in her work throughout her career. In Jiu Jin Shan (Old Gold Mountain), over two hundred thousand fortune cookies create a symbolic gold mountain that engulfs a crossroads of railroad tracks running beneath. The junction where the tracks meet serves as both a crossroads and 1 terminus, a visual metaphor of the cultural intersection of East and West. Liu references not only the history of the Chinese laborers who built the railroads to support the West Coast Gold Rush, but also the hope shared among these migrant workers that they could find material prosperity in the new world. The Mills College Art Museum is excited to be the first venue outside of China to present Tai Cang— Great Granary.

Sanctioned twirling contests are largely responsible for the growth, development, and advancement of twirling as a performance sport, performing art, and beneficial activity. Many of the keen traits found in today’s twirlers can be directly credited to their participation in twirling contests, i.e., physical fitness, good sportsmanship, poise, showmanship, teamwork, personality projection, ambidexterity, and self- confidence. Baton twirling contests provide a place where baton twirlers can join together in friendly competition and share common interests- while participating in a program for baton boosters and the public to view. NBTA INTERNATIONAL’s large network of baton twirling contests is an important part of the national and world baton twirling picture. There is usually greater interest and a higher level of twirling proficiency found in areas where there are top-level competitions.     16 September 2019 Dear Parents, Grandparents and Carers As we draw to the end of this busy term, it is a good time to reflect on the many wonderful opportunities our students, teachers and parents have enjoyed. Improve learning and achievement for all students Year 1 and 2 students are currently engaged in a science inquiry with the key idea, simple machines serve a purpose for all people. In week 8, students explored through hands on activities the concepts of friction, forces and how pullies operate. This science incursion was led by Paula Taylor from the Centre of Innovation and Learning. Last week six students from year 3 to year 5 participated in Tuggeranong Schools Senior Enrichment program. The year 3 day focused on digital technologies, year 4 on STEM including robotics and year 5 had an active day focusing on physical education. As part of our Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) our teachers continue to work collaboratively in their teams to improve student outcomes. This term PLCs have been analysing reading data and reading programs to ensure individual needs of all students are accommodated with the aim of a year’s growth for every student. We invite you to join as for the first Richardson’s Got Talent on Friday 27 September at 9am in the school hall. Students have been busy preparing at a lunch time with the assistance of Mrs May and they are very eager to share with the community their skills and talents. See you all there! Centering around the activities and writings of Qi Rushan (1870-1962), who played a key role both in reshaping the modes of elite involvement in opera and in systematic knowledge production about opera, this dissertation explores this transformation from a transitional generation of theatrical connoisseurs and researchers in early twentieth-century China.     China during the Tang-Song Interregnum, 878–978 This book challenges the long-established structure of Chinese history around dynasties, adopting a more “organic” approach which emphasises cultural and economic trends that transcend arbitrary dynastic boundaries. It argues that with the collapse of the Tang court and northern control over the holistic empire in the last decades of the ninth century, the now-autonomous kingdoms that filled the political vacuum in the south responded with a burst of innovative energy that helped set the stage for the economic and cultural transformations of the following Song dynasty. Moreover, it argues that these transformations and this economic and cultural innovation deeply affected the subsequent model of holistic empire which continues right up to the present and that therefore the interregnum century of division left a critically important legacy.     PROHIBITION OF JIATOU ZAJU IN THE MING DYNASTY AND THE PORTRAYAL OF THE EMPEROR ON STAGE Tian Yuan Tan (Chen Tianyuan) INTRODUCTION: THE TERMS JIATOU AND JIATOU ZAJU Portraying the emperor on stage was not at all uncommon in the Yuan dynasty (1260-1368). This can be gathered from the fact that the emperor role, designated by the term jiatou, is one of the cus- tomary role types in Yuan drama.' According to the Qinglouji (The Green Bower Collection), a valuable collection of short biograph- ical notes on performers in the Yuan dynasty compiled around 1364, jiatou is one of the waijiao (extra roles) in zaju besides the fe- male and male lead roles, clan (female) and mo (male): [These extra role types] include the jiatou, the beauty pining in her boudoir, the bawd, the coquettish young girl, the high official, the poor, the brigand, the government servant, and those categories concerning immortals and Taoist deliver- ance, and family matters.'- The term "jiatou" originally referred to the throne of the emperor which an old eunuch would carry in front of the emperor's carriage on an imperial tour of inspection.' Since jiatou was an important insignia of an imperial tour, the modern Chinese scholar Sun Kaidi suggests that the term "jiatou zaju" must therefore involve at least a certain scene of the emperor going out in a carriage, as found in Act Three of both Hangong qiu (Autumn in the Palace of Han) and Tian Yuan Tan, "Prohibition of Jiatou Zaju in the Ming Dynasty and the Portrayal of the Emperor on Stage," MING STUDIES, 49, pp.
