Adaptation of wildlife to urban settings Increasing air traffic Faster, quieter 2-engine jet aircraft Increased aerodrome liability issues associated with bird strikes and wildlife hazards. Increasing populations of many species hazardous to aviation 34 A wildlife strike is identified when: A pilot reports striking 1 or more birds or other wildlife; Aircraft maintenance personnel identify aircraft damage as having been caused by a wildlife strike Personnel on the ground report seeing an aircraft strikes 1 or more birds or other wildlife; Bird or other wildlife remains, whether in whole or in part, are found within 60m of a runway centerline. 35 Impact of Bird strike to aircraft Bird strikes are extremely expensive to modern aircraft operators. The associated costs include: down-time for inspection repair following bird strike damage, rescheduling of flights, transfer of passengers via alternative means of transport overnight accommodation. 36 Impact of Bird strike to aircraft Bird strikes can cause significant damage to aircraft a dangerous loss of power when the birds are pulled into jet engines. during take-off or initial climbing phase the associated impacts and losses in power is very dangerous . The results can be catastrophic. We must remember that any bird is a potential hazard to an aircraft . 37 Bird Strike to aircraft 38 Bird Strike to aircraft Bird Strike on BIMAN’s B737-800 Aircraft 39 Bird strike damage….. 40 Bird strike damage….. • Demand Forecasting for a Domestic Airport-A Case Study
Proceedings of the 3rd International Conference on Civil Engineering for Sustainable Development (ICCESD 2016), 12~14 February 2016, KUET, Khulna, Bangladesh (ISBN: 978-984-34-0265-3) DEMAND FORECASTING FOR A DOMESTIC AIRPORT-A CASE STUDY Md. Salahuddin Sohag*1 and Md. Rokonuzzaman2 1 Student, Khulna University of Engineering & Technology, Bangladesh, e-mail: [email protected] 2 Professor, Khulna University of Engineering & Technology, Bangladesh, e-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT Passenger demand forecasting of an airport is regarded as a critical and important activity for an economic airport planning and development process. Different demand models are usually used to forecast the demand of an airport. In this paper, a back propagation neural network model is developed to forecast the demand of a new domestic airport in a divisional capital in Bangladesh. Several factors such as GDP, Population and Travel time ratio etc. have been used for the forecasting process. From the results of this study, it is observed that ANN serves as a reliable and simple predictive tool for air travel demand forecast. A comparative study is also done between the predictions of neural network and gravity type demand model. Keywords: Airport, passenger demand , ANN model , gravity model 1. INTRODUCTION Air transportation system is regarded as a special mode of transportation due to its operational and level of service characteristics. The infrastructure needed for air transportation is very large and involves huge investment (Rangaraju, 1992). The effectiveness of an air transport system mostly depends on the number of users using it. Forecasting passenger transport demand is therefore of critical importance for existing airport authorities.
