GIFTS AND GIVING Check out the Pennswood Foundation Bulletin Board outside Penn Hall for pictures! The display illustrates gifts and giving by the Pennswood Library Committee, Pennswood volunteers, and Pennswood donors. When the Library Committee needed more room, they voted to discontinue using space for children’s books. It was suggested that those books could be donated to schools with limited resources. Thus, 11 boxes of books were donated to the Edwin Stanton School, a 150 year old elementary school in South Philadelphia. Due to Covid, the school was not open to books or visitors in the early days of 2021, so the books were stored in Bainbridge House, a religious community that supports and ministers to the local Philadelphia neighborhood. This past May, students from the Edwin School fourth grade walked one block from school to the Bainbridge House to retrieve their books. Those books not only delighted those fourth grade students, but the students shared them with family and friends. The thank you notes we received express a shared gift and giving experience. LETTING OUR LIVES SPEAK - MOTT (“M” BUILDING) (Have you wondered how the Pennswood buildings were named? Each week the Quakerism Committee features one building and its namesake.) Lucretia Coffin Mott devoted her life to the abolition of slavery, women’s rights, school and prison reforms, temperance, peace and religious tolerance. Nantucket, Massachusetts was her birthplace into a Quaker family on January 3, 1793. When she tried to join the men’s Abolition Society, she was barred, so she formed the Women’s Abolition Society, not only helping escaped enslaved people but also providing education for adults and children. Having grown up in a Quaker family where education of girls and boys was valued equally, she went to a co-educational Quaker school in Dutchess County, New York. She met and married James Mott, and they worked together on many issues, living most of their lives in Philadelphia. They attended the World’s Anti-Slavery Convention in England in 1840, but she and other women delegates were refused seating. However, she met Elizabeth Cady Stanton, who became a long-time friend and co-leader in the American women’s rights movement. In 1848 Lucretia Mott presided over the historic Seneca Falls Convention which issued the Declaration of Sentiments, a call for equal treatment of women, ushering in the birth of the Women’s Right’s Movement. Lucretia was chosen first president of the Equal Rights Association in 1866 due to her long service. Throughout her life, Lucretia championed the causes of equality for all, education, and women’s rights. She died on November 11, 1880, age 87, at Roadside Farm on the northern edge of Philadelphia (you can drive by it on Broad Street). She is buried in the Fair Hill Burial Ground, Philadelphia, 2901 Germantown Ave., recently featured in a Pennswood program. Carolyn, Quakerism Committee

Meet Eleanor, New Resident A life-long Pennsylvanian, Eleanor has recently moved to Pennswood from Holland, Pennsylvania. Married for 60 years, Eleanor and her husband Frank met in high school, and they married early while Frank was still in college. Although Eleanor grew up as an only child, she and Frank raised five daughters, who were born over a very busy seven-year span! Initially living in Levittown in ever larger houses as their family grew, they moved to Holland, Pennsylvania, where they resided for the past thirty-five years. When her youngest daughter was in kindergarten, Eleanor took a part-time job at St. Mary’s Hospital, which was then brand new and situated in a single building. Since then, working in many departments, she developed X-Rays, was a unit clerk in the outpatient department, and also served as a switchboard operator. Part-time work left Eleanor with plenty of time for her many volunteer activities. She was a volunteer usher at Bucks County Playhouse, she taught sewing to girls in a Catholic Youth Organization, and she made quilts for needy babies through a Grange group. She assisted with the Girl Scouts and in all the other activities her girls were involved with. Her husband Frank was a criminal investigator with the IRS. He worked throughout New Jersey and was a very involved father when he was home. Their daughters now live in Yardley, Philadelphia, Long Beach Island, New Jersey, and Flemington, New Jersey. Her 13 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren are a large part of Eleanor’s life. The family traveled through most of the United States and has visited Ireland, Germany and Switzerland. The Matterhorn, despite the fog, was a major highlight. Eleanor has a lively personality. She enjoys conversations, book clubs, old radio shows, reading both fiction and non-fiction, and she is deciding on groups to join at Pennswood. Stop her and say hello; you’ll be glad you did!

An Empty Room with a View Artists all! When you read this it will very nearly be August and closing in on the next show in the Resident Art Gallery—“A Room with a View." I myself am going around campus in search for rooms with a view to photograph. I attach one here. Let me remind you that any work submitted must be made by the person submitting it. When you made it is irrelevant: who made it is key. We look for Fine Art in any media that can hang and clay works that are not utilitarian. Each artist may submit not more than two pieces. Your work will not be juried, just checked for safety and accepted as long as there is space for it. The art you will show in the upcoming exhibition at the Resident Art Gallery must be in our hands on Thursday, August 19, prepared for safe hanging (or placing if clay work). If you have questions, contact Barbie or Jill. The show will open on Sunday, August 22 and come down on Wednesday, October 27. Meanwhile, if any of you have work ready to go that could be photographed for the show’s poster, please contact me, Yoma. Yoma, Resident Art Gallery
