An Introduction to Early Modern Sex and Gender At the level of biology, the early modern conception of sexual difference was, in many ways, much more fluid and less rigidly compartmentalized than our contemporary constructs. Galen’s second-century one-sex theory of male and female anatomy was commonly accepted by not only the general public, but also physicians and scientists, until the end of the sixteenth century (Schiebinger 76).

  • Loki Production Brief
PRODUCTION BRIEF “I am Loki, and I am burdened with glorious purpose.” —Loki arvel Studios’ “Loki,” an original live-action series created exclusively for Disney+, features the mercurial God of Mischief as he steps out of his brother’s shadow. The series, described as a crime-thriller meets epic-adventure, takes place after the events Mof “Avengers: Endgame.” “‘Loki’ is intriguingly different with a bold creative swing,” says Kevin Feige, President, Marvel Studios and Chief Creative Officer, Marvel. “This series breaks new ground for the Marvel Cinematic Universe before it, and lays the groundwork for things to come.” The starting point of the series is the moment in “Avengers: Endgame” when the 2012 Loki takes the Tesseract—from there Loki lands in the hands of the Time Variance Authority (TVA), which is outside of the timeline, concurrent to the current day Marvel Cinematic Universe. In his cross-timeline journey, Loki finds himself a fish out of water as he tries to navigate—and manipulate—his way through the bureaucratic nightmare that is the Time Variance Authority and its by-the-numbers mentality. This is Loki as you have never seen him. Stripped of his self- proclaimed majesty but with his ego still intact, Loki faces consequences he never thought could happen to such a supreme being as himself. In that, there is a lot of humor as he is taken down a few pegs and struggles to find his footing in the unforgiving bureaucracy of the Time Variance Authority. As the series progresses, we see different sides of Loki as he is drawn into helping to solve a serious crime with an agent 1 of the TVA, Mobius, who needs his “unique Loki perspective” to locate the culprits and mend the timeline.

  • Globe on Screen Travels to Cinema Screens in New Territories
GLOBE ON SCREEN TRAVELS TO CINEMA SCREENS IN NEW TERRITORIES Gothenburg 8 July 2013 – Shakespeare's Globe, in partnership with Arts Alliance Media and Live Cinema AB, will bring three blockbusters from its award-winning 2012 theatre season to more than 70 cinemas in Sweden and Norway this fall. The season marks the first time performances from London’s Globe theatre have been made available to cinemas outside of English-language territories. The 2013 Globe on Screen season, coming to screens from 21st September, will feature Henry V, The Taming of the Shrew and Olivier-nominated Twelfth Night. Audiences in Sweden, and also in Norway thanks to a brand new streaming technology licensed by Bonanza Media AS, will have the opportunity to experience the world's most famous stage as if they were there in person – all three performances have been captured in high definition and will be broadcast in their entirety in pristine digital cinema quality, with full 5.1 surround sound, and fully subtitled in Swedish and Norwegian. Globe on Screen will offer those who missed out on the Globe’s sensational Twelfth Night a second chance to see the production the critics described as “sensational...pure comic delight”. Mark Rylance, winner of multiple Olivier and Tony Awards, and Stephen Fry star in the production, directed by Tim Carroll. Twelfth Night was one of London theatre’s biggest hits of summer 2012, completely selling out all of its performances at the Globe and creating queues around the block in the West End. Critics raved that Mark Rylance’s “dazzling high definition performances” lifted the production “into the sublime”.

  • Shakespeare and East Asia
OUP CORRECTED PROOF – FINAL, 8/12/2020, SPi Oxford Shakespeare Topics GENERAL EDITORS: PETER HOLLAND, AND STANLEY WELLS Shakespeare and East Asia ALEXA ALICE JOUBIN 1 OUP CORRECTED PROOF – FINAL, 8/12/2020, SPi Prologue The Cultural Meanings of Shakespeare and Asia Today Performance is a doubly acted affair that is shaped not only by the characters but also by the actors. Actors embody characters across history and culture. Adaptations, meanwhile, are strangers at home. They defamiliarize canonical works and everyday utterances while offering something recognizable through a new language and form. When Viola, disguised as page boy Cesario, and finding herself pursued by the lovelorn Olivia, declares that “I am the man . she were better love a dream” in Twelfth Night (2.2.25–26), she speaks with double irony as a doubly cross-dressed boy actor on the early modern English stage (such as Nathan Field, 1587–1619) and as an adult male actor (Johnny Flynn) in Mark Rylance’s all-male pro- duction at the Globe Theatre in London in 2012 (dir. Tim Carroll). In Yukio Ninagawa’s 2005 Kabuki Twelfth Night, Onoe Kikunosuke V brought a new perspective to the notion of gender fluidity when he played in rapid succession Viola, her twin brother Sebastian, and her alter ego Cesario. As an otokoyaku (actress specializing in male roles) in the all-female Takarazuka musical production (dir. Kimura Shinji, 1999) derived from shōjo (teen girl) mangas, Yamato Yuga’s Viola would embody enticing gender fluidity when speaking Japanese, a language that often elides the subject. Since the genre of Takarazuka is an all-female production, Viola’s Cesario would not be the only cross-dressing character.
