OPEN ACCESS 1 [email protected] (corresponding author), 2 [email protected], 3 [email protected], 4 [email protected] Abstract: A camera trap survey was conducted in the recently protected Cleopatra’s Needle Critcal Habitat (CNCH) in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan, Philippines from February to May 2015 at 39 camera trap sites. A bait of common pig’s blood was used at 36 sites, while the three remaining sites were surveyed without a bait and monitored a stream with a latrine site or mud bath with tracks. Seven natve species were detected and three of these species were endemic to the island province. Species included: Common Palm Civet Paradoxurus philippinensis, Palawan Porcupine Hystrix pumila, Collared Mongoose Urva semitorquata, Palawan Stnk Badger Mydaus marchei, Palawan Leopard Cat Prionailurus bengalensis heaneyi, Asian Small-clawed Oter Aonyx cinereus, and Malay Civet Viverra tangalunga. Analysis of the actvity paterns of the three most commonly captured species revealed predominantly nocturnal actvity for the Common Palm Civet, Palawan Porcupine, and Palawan Stnk Badger. The Philippine Palm Civet showed occasional diurnal actvity. The seven photo-captured species appeared most common, or were at the least recorded, below 750m. Five species (the Philippine Palm Civet, Palawan Porcupine, Collared Mongoose, Palawan Stnk Badger, and Palawan Leopard Cat) were also recorded above 1000m. The CNCH supports two threatened species, the Palawan Porcupine and the Asian Small-clawed Oter, which are listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN, and the Collared Mongoose is listed as Near Threatened. The Palawan Leopard Cat is considered Vulnerable within the Philippines, although it has yet to be assessed by the IUCN. This documentaton highlights the biodiversity signifcance within the newly protected critcal habitat and the need to support ongoing conservaton eforts within the critcal habitat.     The 2008 IUCN red listings of the world’s small carnivores Jan SCHIPPER¹*, Michael HOFFMANN¹, J. W. DUCKWORTH² and James CONROY³ Abstract The global conservation status of all the world’s mammals was assessed for the 2008 IUCN Red List. Of the 165 species of small carni- vores recognised during the process, two are Extinct (EX), one is Critically Endangered (CR), ten are Endangered (EN), 22 Vulnerable (VU), ten Near Threatened (NT), 15 Data Deficient (DD) and 105 Least Concern. Thus, 22% of the species for which a category was assigned other than DD were assessed as threatened (i.e. CR, EN or VU), as against 25% for mammals as a whole. Among otters, seven (58%) of the 12 species for which a category was assigned were identified as threatened. This reflects their attachment to rivers and other waterbodies, and heavy trade-driven hunting. The IUCN Red List species accounts are living documents to be updated annually, and further information to refine listings is welcome. We 23 24 investigated tiger, leopard and prey densities across this understudied habitat. Our camera trapping survey cov- 24 25 ered 536 km2 of Churia and surrounding areas within Chitwan National Park (CNP). We used 161 trapping lo- 25 26 cations and accumulated 2097 trap-nights in a 60-day survey period during the winter season of 2010–2011. In 26 27 addition, we walked 136 km over 81 different line transects using distance sampling to estimate prey density. 27 28 We photographed 31 individual tigers, 28 individual leopards and 25 other mammalian species. Spatial capture– 28 29 recapture methods resulted in lower density estimates for tigers, ranging from 2.3 to 2.9 tigers per 100 km2, than 29 30 for leopards, which ranged from 3.3 to 5.1 leopards per 100 km2.
