Fusion Without Confusion Raga Basics Indian Rhythm Basics Solkattu, also known as konnakol is the art of performing percussion syllables vocally. It comes from the Carnatic music tradition of South India and is mostly used in conjunction with instrumental music and dance instruction, although it has been widely adopted throughout the world as a modern composition and performance tool. Similarly, the music of North India has its own system of rhythm vocalization that is based on Bols, which are the vocalization of specific sounds that correspond to specific sounds that are made on the drums of North India, most notably the Tabla drums. Like in the south, the bols are used in musical training, as well as composition and performance. In addition, solkattu sounds are often referred to as bols, and the practice of reciting bols in the north is sometimes referred to as solkattu, so the distinction between the two practices is blurred a bit. The exercises and compositions we will discuss contain bols that are found in both North and South India, however they come from the tradition of the North Indian tabla drums. Furthermore, the theoretical aspect of the compositions is distinctly from the Hindustani, (north Indian) tradition. Hence, for the purpose of this presentation, the use of the term Solkattu refers to the broader, more general practice of Indian rhythmic language. The art of music was, and still is, regarded as both holy and heavenly giving not only aesthetic pleasure but also inducing a joyful religious discipline. Emotion and devotion are the essential characteristics of Indian music from the aesthetic side. From the technical perspective, we talk about melody and rhythm. A raga, the nucleus of Indian classical music, may be defined as a melodic structure with fixed notes and a set of rules characterizing a certain mood conveyed by performance.. The strength of raga-based songs, although they generally do not quite maintain the raga correctly, in promoting Indian classical music among laymen cannot be thrown away. The present paper analyzes an old and popular playback song based on the raga Bhairavi using a statistical approach, thereby extending our previous work from pure classical music to a semi-classical paradigm. The analysis consists of forming melody groups of notes and measuring the significance of these groups and segments, analysis of lengths of melody groups, comparing melody groups over similarity etc. Finally, the paper raises the question “What % of a raga is contained in a song?” as an open research problem demanding an in-depth statistical investigation. -

ABSTRACT 1.1 INTRODUCTION: Pre-hypertension is more prevalent than hypertension worldwide. Management of pre- hypertensive state is usually with lifestyle modifications including, listening to relaxing music that can help in preventing the progressive rise in blood pressure and cardio-vascular disorders. This study was taken up to find out the effects of listening to Indian classical music based on time theory of Ragas (playing a Raga at the right time) on pre-hypertensive patients and how they respond to this concept. 1.2 AIM & OBJECTIVES: It has been undertaken with an aim to understand the effect of listening to Indian classical instrumental music based on the time theory of Ragas on pre-hypertensive patients. 1.3 SUBJECTS & METHODS: This study is a repeated measure randomized group designed study with a music listening experimental group and a control group receiving no music intervention. The study was conductedIJSER at Center for Music Therapy Education and Research at Mahatma Gandhi medical college and research institute, Pondicherry. 30 Pre-hypertensive out patients from the Department of General Medicine participated in the study after giving informed consent form. Systolic BP (SBP), Diastolic BP (DBP), Pulse Rate (PR) and Respiratory Rate (RR) measures were taken on baseline and every week for a month. -

Though there are associated readings and writing assignments that are required for the completion of the course and the granting of academic credit, the tutorial focuses on the benefits of structured experiential learning. The Sitar Tutorial focuses on one of India’s major classical musical instruments, most notably made famous on the international scene by Pandit Ravi Shankar. Although the exact origin of the instrument remains debated among scholars, the tradition can be traced back several centuries, perhaps as early as the thirteenth century. The sitar combines elements of Indian and Persian stringed instruments, and flourished in the courts of the Mughals. Over the years, the sitar has gone through several transformations, which have resulted in variations in both sound and style. Today, the distinct sound of the sitar—characterized by its drone strings and resonator—has become emblematic of Hindustani (North Indian) classical music. Students of the Sitar Tutorial in Varanasi will have the unique opportunity to participate in the guru- shishya (student) tradition of pedagogy, while at the same time working with program faculty to review contemporary literature related to the field and to discuss themes related to experiential learning more broadly. -
A Non Linear Approach Towards Automated Emotion Analysis in Hindustani Music

Raman Centre for Physics and Music, 2Department of Physics Jadavpur University, Kolkata: 700032 *[email protected] ABSTRACT: In North Indian Classical Music, raga forms the basic structure over which individual improvisations is performed by an artist based on his/her creativity. The Alap is the opening section of a typical Hindustani Music (HM) performance, where the raga is introduced and the paths of its development are revealed using all the notes used in that particular raga and allowed transitions between them with proper distribution over time. In India, corresponding to each raga, several emotional flavors are listed, namely erotic love, pathetic, devotional, comic, horrific, repugnant, heroic, fantastic, furious, peaceful. The detection of emotional cues from Hindustani Classical music is a demanding task due to the inherent ambiguity present in the different ragas, which makes it difficult to identify any particular emotion from a certain raga. In this study we took the help of a high resolution mathematical microscope (MFDFA or Multifractal Detrended Fluctuation Analysis) to procure information about the inherent complexities and time series fluctuations that constitute an acoustic signal. With the help of this technique, 3 min alap portion of six conventional ragas of Hindustani classical music namely, Darbari Kanada, Yaman, Mian ki Malhar, Durga, Jay Jayanti and Hamswadhani played in three different musical instruments were analyzed. The results are discussed in detail.
