6 Preface Ioan Barbu Eugen Petrescu made himself known from the first books published in the literary historical and memorialist landscape of Vâlcea. He is endowed with a peculiar style in treating new subjects, this way inviting the reader into an unknown place that is not entirely artistically exploited. I could say that historical topics were the hard work that he preferred in his writings, wrapping them in the light of truth. For Eugen Petrescu, the history of the people is part of his soul, representing a world where he feels good; the heroes that stand as icons in front of us feed his dreams, building bright ideals for him. During the last years, the lives of the heroes among us have interested him as he has found hidden in them aspirations, unsuspected beauties flowing calmly and massively, beyond their tragic and cruel aspects. These „portrait sketches” included in his second volume (coauthor, Gabriela Crăciun), suggestively entitled People from Vâlcea at anniversary time (2014), describe in warm words, nothing pathetic or artificial, normal lives but with high results in different activity areas. This volume, proposed for prefacing, includes the portraits of 32 personalities who, in 2014, celebrated 85 years old, 80 years old, 75 years old etc. I know them all. Each one of them represents a light in the window of the time we spent together: the writers Constantin Mateescu, Nicolae Manolescu, Nicolae Radu, Doru Moțoc, George Mirea, the archimandrite Chesarie Gheorghescu, the archimandrite Veniamin Micle, the teachers or the cultured men Georgescu, Laurențiu Stilea, Iulian Comănescu – and all the others (the space forces me to stop here). With this editorial project, an initiative that deserves all the praise, Eugen Petrescu and Gabriela Crăciun manage to confess (and to remind) people from Vâlcea, proud of their Country, an old country 7 of the Getic wolves, that here we had and still have a people of creators of the „place”, starting with wonderful writers and artists, brilliant scientists and cultured men and sportsmen that have led the glory of our flag into the world. Dear readers, this book that you are now looking through, is a role-model for the others, as a tool of spreading the example of some personalities from Romania, that deep Romania minding its own business and seeking the fulfillment of its purpose in the United Europe, as an answer of the place to the raging Neo-Phanariots. This volume brings a great contribution to the development of the cultural patrimony of Vâlcea, the ancestral land, which is in fact a small universe in Romania, a country which will have to promote its values with livelier intensity and greater efficiency. • Romania Redivivus
alexander clapp ROMANIA REDIVIVUS nce the badlands of neoliberal Europe, Romania has become its bustling frontier. A post-communist mafia state that was cast to the bottom of the European heap by opinion- makers sixteen years ago is now billed as the success story Oof eu expansion.1 Its growth rate at nearly 6 per cent is the highest on the continent, albeit boosted by fiscal largesse.2 In Bucharest more politicians have been put in jail for corruption over the past decade than have been convicted in the rest of Eastern Europe put together. Romania causes Brussels and Berlin almost none of the headaches inflicted by the Visegrád Group—Czechia, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia— which in 1993 declined to accept Romania as a peer and collectively entered the European Union three years before it. Romanians con- sistently rank among the most Europhile people in the Union.3 An anti-eu party has never appeared on a Romanian ballot, much less in the parliament. Scattered political appeals to unsavoury interwar traditions—Legionnairism, Greater Romanianism—attract fewer voters than do far-right movements across most of Western Europe. The two million Magyars of Transylvania, one of Europe’s largest minorities, have become a model for inter-ethnic relations after a time when the park benches of Cluj were gilded in the Romanian tricolore to remind every- one where they were. Indeed, perhaps the aptest symbol of Romania’s place in Europe today is the man who sits in the Presidential Palace of Cotroceni in Bucharest. Klaus Iohannis—a former physics teacher at a high school in Sibiu, once Hermannstadt—is an ethnic German head- ing a state that, a generation ago, was shipping hundreds of thousands of its ‘Saxons’ ‘back’ to Bonn at 4,000–10,000 Deutschmarks a head.

RETROVERSIUNE Emil Giurgiuca - Monografie Unquestionably, those who know the literary life from Transylvania, as little as possible, will not consider a futile effort to remove a writer from the undeserved shadow where the history placed him. Emil Giurca’s cultural activity, because about him we are talking about, is a significant “brick” from the wall which was created along with the vast process of clarifying the literary and spiritual Romanian literature and culture. Creator of literature, respected educator, he was in the same time an important fighter for national ideal but also a great entertainer, a cultural advisor to generations of writers from the interwar and postwar period. As many researchers of the aesthetic values observed, it seems that in any literature are important writers, widely recognized from the valuable point of view “as others who fall slightly below, but on different places in the hierarchy of values, enriching and diversifying artistic landscape from their period of time”1. Originally poet from his homeland, as Dumitru Micu noticed in “Romanian Literary History”, he became later the national poet of the whole national space, Emil Giurca cannot easily be integrated in any current or cannot be said that he belongs to any literary school and “if he installed in the classical formula, adopted by traditionalists (as Ion Barbu, a Paul Valery writer), he did it of course, because this formula and only it suited to his sensibility”2, Dumitru Micu said. Each poem in consistent with the requirements of the art is organize by an act of inner balance, a sense of the extent of composition; this is what we call Emil Giurca’s modernism.

About Romania Romania (Romanian: România, IPA: [ro.mɨni.a]) is a country in Southeastern Europe sited in a historic region that dates back to antiquity. It shares border with Hungary and Serbia to the west, Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova to the northeast, and Bulgaria to the south. Romania has a stretch of sea coast along the Black Sea. It is located roughly in the lower basin of the Danube and almost all of the Danube Delta is located within its territory. Romania is a parliamentary unitary state. As a nation-state, the country was formed by the merging of Moldavia and Wallachia in 1859 and it gained recognition of its independence in 1878. Later, in 1918, they were joined by Transylvania, Bukovina and Bessarabia. At the end of World War II, parts of its territories (roughly the present day Moldova) were occupied by USSR and Romania became a member of Warsaw Pact. With the fall of the Iron Curtain in 1989, Romania started a series of political and economic reforms that peaked with Romania joining the European Union. Romania has been a member of the European Union since January 1, 2007, and has the ninth largest territory in the EU and with 22 million people [1] it has the 7th largest population among the EU member states. Its capital and largest city is Bucharest (Romanian: Bucureşti /bu.kureʃtʲ/ (help·info)), the sixth largest city in the EU with almost 2 million people. In 2007, Sibiu, a large city in Transylvania, was chosen as European Capital of Culture.[2] Romania joined NATO on March 29, 2004, and is also a member of the Latin Union, of the Francophonie and of OSCE.

The British clerk crossed out with his pen “valid for one day” and wrote “one month”. Ghi ță Ionescu had to hurry. On 22 March 1947, his diplomatic passport was set to expire 2. He had its validity extended by the chargé d'affaires at the Romanian legation in Ankara. He had just been recalled by Alexandru Cretzianu, Romania's Minister Plenipotentiary in Turkey. Shortly after, a new ambassador to Ankara was appointed, convenient to the Petru Groza government, which was dominated by communists. Most likely, his chances of carrying on as economic adviser at the Romanian legation in Turkey's capital, and therefore of having his passport renewed, were rather slim, and the political events in Bucharest did not inspire optimism, since Ghi ță Ionescu made meticulous preparations to head over the the West.

After war, while sociology was abolished by the communist political regime, anthropology survived under the leadership of the physician Ștefan Milcu, an ex-member of Rainer’s team. As Director of the Anthropological Research Centre, Milcu took over the idea of monographical research ‒ this time from a bioanthropological perspective. However, he invited to researches a few social scientists to cover some aspects of demography, family studies, ethnography etc. Among them, especially Traian Herseni and Vasile Caramelea (under the protection identity of “demographer”, “or statistician”) produced outstanding contributions to the monographs of the villages Clopotiva, Bătrîna, Nucșoara & Cîmpu lui Neag ‒ all of them in the district of Hațeg, an ancient county of great importance for understanding the genesis of the Romanian people. A collateral super-eff ect of this activity was the foundation ‒ în 1964, at Vasile Caramelea’s initiative ‒ of the Section of cultural anthropology in the organization of the Anthropological Research Centre.

One is that these concepts are largely seen as being in a dichotomous position. This research argues about the importance of changing the perception about the various way the concepts can relate to each other. The study considers the representations of the nation and of Europe as correlated. Consequently, the idea of Europe is modified over time according to the political culture type. The peculiarities of the case selection: Romania, as two violent regime changes, amplifies the effects of this multi faced process of conferring meanings to Europe. First, the communist regime crafted its own national narrative by mixing soviet supranational elements with a strong nationalistic rhetoric. This was done also with the use of Protochronism, a Romanian term, describing the process to ascribe, with the use of questionable data and by questionable interpretations, an idealised past to the country. Second, the post-communist elites could not decide what stance should be adopted towards pre-communist and communist regimes. The implications for the concept of Europe were discovered using a thematic analysis on 25 New Year’s Eve messages of Romanians chiefs of the state, transmitted from 1931 to 2016.

FINAL REPORT of the International Commission on the Holocaust in Romania Presented to Romanian President Ion Iliescu November 11, 2004 Bucharest, Romania NOTE: The English text of this Report is currently in preparation for publication. © International Commission on the Holocaust in Romania. All rights reserved. DISTORTION, NEGATIONISM, AND MINIMALIZATION OF THE HOLOCAUST IN POSTWAR ROMANIA Introduction This chapter reviews and analyzes the different forms of Holocaust distortion, denial, and minimalization in post-World War II Romania. It must be emphasized from the start that the analysis is based on the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum’s definition of the Holocaust, which Commission members accepted as authoritative soon after the Commission was established. This definition1 does not leave room for doubt about the state-organized participation of Romania in the genocide against the Jews, since during the Second World War, Romania was among those allies and a collaborators of Nazi Germany that had a systematic plan for the persecution and annihilation of the Jewish population living on territories under their unmitigated control. In Romania’s specific case, an additional “target-population” subjected to or destined for genocide was the Romany minority. This chapter will employ an adequate conceptualization, using both updated recent studies on the Holocaust in general and new interpretations concerning this genocide in particular. Insofar as the employed conceptualization is concerned, two terminological clarifications are in order. First, “distortion” refers to attempts to use historical research on the dimensions and significance of the Holocaust either to diminish its significance or to serve political and propagandistic purposes. Although its use is not strictly confined to the Communist era, the term “distortion” is generally employed in reference to that period, during which historical research was completely subjected to controls by the Communist Party’s political censorship.
