OS CARVALHAIS MARCESCENTES DO CENTRO E SUL DE PORTUGAL ESTUDO E CONSERVAÇÃO RESUMO Esta dissertação trata da análise fitossociológica das formações marcescentes do Centro e Sul de Portugal, apresentando os resultados de uma análise de 186 inventários face a 481 táxones, através de uma análise hierárquica aglomerativa (Método de Ward - distância de Bray-Curtis). A par de clarificar a situação de 3 táxones e 5 nothotáxones do género Quercus pertencentes à flora Portuguesa, permitiu identificar e caracterizar 7 séries de vegetação potencial marcescentes no território em análise, cuja análise biogeográfica e bioclimática, permitiu contribuir para a actualização e definição de novos e mais precisos limites. Por fim, conclui-se que a área ocupada por vegetação potencial marcescente se encontra subestimada na área de estudo e que estes bosques primários estão extremamente degradados, encontrando-se geralmente substituídos pelas séries perenifólias vizinhas, de carácter secundário ou edafoxerófilo. Assim, as ciências Geobotânicas surgem como uma ferramenta imprescindível ao ordenamento e gestão do território, associados à conservação da biodiversidade. Palavras-chave: Bosques marcescentes, Quercus, Fitossociologia, Vegetação-Potencial- Natural, Portugal THE MARCESCENT OAK WOODLANDS IN CENTRE AND SOUTHERN PORTUGAL STUDY AND CONSERVATION ABSTRACT This work deals with the phytosociological survey of marcescent groves in Centre and Southern Portugal, and presents the results of an analysis of 186 relevés facing 481 taxa, trough Hierarchical Clustering (Ward’s method – Bray-Curtis distance). Beside enlightening the situation of 3 taxons and 5 nothotaxons from Quercus genus belonging to the Portuguese flora, it also allowed the identification and characterization of 7 potential marcescent vegetation series in the studied territory, which biogeographical and bioclimatic analysis, endorsed new limits definition and update. At last, we conclude that the occupied area belonging to marcescent potential vegetation is currently underestimated in the study area and these primary woodlands are deeply degraded, founding themselves generally substituted by neighbouring evergreen series with secondary or edaphoxerophilous character. As so, geobotanical sciences emerge as indispensable tool for territorial planning and managing, regarding biodiversity conservation. In this study two phylogenies are reconstructed using parsimony and Bayesian methods. A family-level phylogeny was estimated to test the monophyly and time of divergence of the South African lineage. For most of this conflict Portugal enjoyed virtually unchallenged air supremacy and increasingly based its strategy on this advantage. The Portuguese Air Force (Força Aérea Portuguesa, abbreviated FAP) consequently played a central role in the war for Guinea, at times threatening the PAIGC with military defeat. Portugal‘s reliance on air power compelled the insurgents to search for an effective counter-measure, and by 1973 they succeeded with their acquisition and employment of the Strela-2 shoulder-fired surface-to-air missile, altering the course of the war and the future of Portugal itself in the process. To date, however, no detailed study of this seminal episode in air power history has been conducted. In an international climate plagued by insurgency, terrorism, and the proliferation of sophisticated weapons, the hard lessons learned by Portugal offer enduring insight to historians and current air power practitioners alike.

Several drawings bring testimony to this, by showing different ways of representing natural or built elements, allowing for comparisons with other regions of the country or even Europe. The comparison with earlier projects, and given the information contained mainly in the works of Luís Serrão Pimentel and Manuel de Azevedo Fortes, lead us not only to the conclusion of the acceptance of the proposed rules, in order to enrich the profile of military engineers in Portugal, but also to notice the changes that this acceptance signified, emphasizing especially the technical and artistic sensibility of the authors of these projects of military architecture. This species faces various threats, namely, human disturbance, the presence of Carpobrotus edulis, yellow-legged gull, common-rabbit, and black-rat populations. Thus, exclusion areas were installed, which blocked the access of most Gulls, aiming to promote the recovery of A. berlengensis. Additionally, rabbits and rats were removed from the island. After six years of surveys, there has been an increase in the number of individuals of A. berlengensis in the exclusion areas, and a clear shift in the size structure of the A.

A number of 130 species were found within the herbariums studied for this present paper (Al. Beldie Herbarium from Romania, The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh's herbarium, WU Herbarium from Wien and Harvard University Herbaria from the U.S.A.). The studied Campanula species are widespread on three continents: Europe, Asia and North America. A lot of species is endemic with seven of them found only in California. The most common species from the studied herbariums were: C. rotundifolia and C. rapunculoides, together with C. sibirica, C. glomerata, C. stevenii, C. spatulata, C. collina and C. bellidifolia. Al. Beldie Herbarium is an important resource as it contains some endemic species such as C. carpatica and C. transsilvanica. In addition, the species were mostly collected from Romania, as well as from other 13 European countries. As such, a detailed analysis of vouchers from different herbariums can bring new information regarding the number of species from a certain Genus, their spreading area or about their nomenclature. INTRODUCTION Campanula Genus belongs to the Campanulaceae Family and contains approximately 400-600 species that are spread out in the North hemisphere.
