He possessed no personal fortune, nor was he backed by any state or corporate interest. Yet he met personally with dozens of heads of state: prime minis- ters, presidents, kings, emperors, princes and princesses—as well as legislators, ambassadors, cabinet ministers, first ladies, governors, mayors, generals, chief executives, judges and other leaders of government and industry. Flying across the globe in his plane like a shuttle diplomat, this private citizen met with British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher; King Leopold of Belgium; American First Lady Nancy Reagan; Chinese Premier Deng Xiaoping; Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie; Jordan’s King Hussein; Egyptian presi- dents Anwar Sadat and Hosni Mubarak; and the emperor, crown prince and seven successive prime ministers of Japan. In between, he met the presidents, prime ministers, and/or kings of Spain, the Philippines, India, Indonesia, Thailand, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Lebanon, Bangladesh, South Africa, Kenya and Chile— and ambassadors from dozens more countries. Oftentimes at banquets and meetings between such luminaries and himself, it was the latter who was the keynote speaker or the guest of honor. Braided Fermions from Hurwitz Algebras

Some curious structural similarities between a recent braid- and Hurwitz algebraic description of the unbroken internal symmetries for a single generations of Standard Model fermions were recently identified. The non-trivial braid groups that can be represented using c the four normed division algebras are B2 and B3, exactly those required to represent a single generation of fermions in terms of simple three strand ribbon braids. These braided fermion states can be identified with the basis states of the minimal left ideals of the Clifford algebra C`(6), generated from the nested left actions of the complex octonions C ⊗ O on itself. That is, the ribbon spectrum can be related to octonion algebras. Some speculative ideas relating to ongoing research that attempts to construct a unified theory based on braid groups and Hurwitz algebras are discussed. 1. Introduction Leptons and quarks are identified with representations of the gauge group U(1)Y × SU(2)L × SU(3)C in the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics. Despite its success in accurately describing and predicting experimental observations, this gauge group lacks a theoretical basis. Why has Nature chosen these gauge groups from an infinite set of Lie groups, and why do only some representations correspond to physical states? A second shortcoming of the SM is the lack of gravity, or equivalently, its unification with General Relativity (GR). -

Israeli Nuclear Deterrence: The Failure of a Concept "How did the Change in Israel's Strategic Context Affect the Usefulness of the Israeli Nuclear Deterrent?" By Amr Nasr El-Din ID # 900020584 Supervised by Dr. Bahgat Korany Introduction: This research will attempt to examine how the changes in Israel’s security environment have affected the strategic usefulness of its nuclear weapons. Those changes can be summed up as: the fall of state-centered security threats and the rise, instead, of security threats stemming from Non-State Actors (NSAs) using asymmetric forms of warfare. A complex set of often interrelated political and strategic factors that were not confined to Middle Eastern political setting alone but extended to the rest of the world initiated these two simultaneous processes. Historically, the Israeli nuclear deterrent was developed during the 1950s and 1960s when Israel’s strategic setting was mainly dominated by state-centered security threats. Consequently, Israel was mainly concerned, at the time, with the threat of possible symmetrical military confrontations with its Arab neighbors – something that created a strategic value for its nuclear deterrent. Yet, a closer examination of the evolution of the Israeli security environment since 1982 will reveal that Non-State Actors (NSAs) that use asymmetrical forms of warfare, slowly but surely, came to dominate the Israeli security setting. Since then, Israel’s major security threats originated from NSAs operating in neighboring states (as in the case of Hezbollah in Lebanon) or from the Arab territories occupied in 1967, mainly the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, or from Israel's proper.
