Two, possibly three underground workings (connected underground) are situated in the south west corner of the open quarry at Quarry Wood, Sherborne Park, Gloucestershire, National Grid Reference SP 16561408, altitude 165 m. They were surveyed with the permission and help of the National Trust in September 1993. Total surveyed length: 140 m, and vertical range 3.92 m. A copy of this report was sent to the National Trust who are undertaking an archaeological appraisal of the Park. History. A full archival search has not been undertaken, however, Arkell (1947) records the use of ‘Sherborne Stone‘ at Windsor, and later Oxford, from 1365. More specifically, Hull (1857) shows an engraving of the open quarry at Quarry Wood. He makes no mention of underground workings, but does at nearby Windrush where the quarry was worked underground before 1840. Arkell states that three galleries could be entered at Quarry Wood in the 1940s and that the quarry had remained in use until 1915 for estate use. This type of underground quarry came within the scope of various Government Mining and Quarrying Acts from c. 1880, however Sherborne does not appear in these mineral lists. No datable evidence was found underground for primary working, but the above data and more specifically the style of working, deterioration of wooden props, etc, points probably to a date c. 1860 - 1880, unless they were later worked illegally‘. Subsequent to the survey, members of the Gloucester Speleological Society found clay pipe. -

The Upper River Frome fl ows through the length of the estate with numerous springs, dry valleys and historical impoundments. Communications Roads Cheltenham Lies on Routes Connecting the Upper Severn Vale with the Cotswolds to the East and Midlands to the North
DRAFT – VCH Gloucestershire 15 [Cheltenham] Communications Roads Cheltenham lies on routes connecting the upper Severn Vale with the Cotswolds to the east and Midlands to the north. Several major ancient routes passed nearby, including the Fosse Way, White Way and Salt Way, and the town was linked into this important network of roads by more local, minor routes. Cheltenham may have been joined to the Salt Way running from Droitwich to Lechlade1 by Saleweistrete,2 or by the old coach road to London, the Cheltenham end of which was known as Greenway Lane;3 the White Way running north from Cirencester passed through Sandford.4 The medieval settlement of Cheltenham was largely ranged along a single high street running south-east and north-west, with its church and manorial complex adjacent to the south, and burgage plots (some still traceable in modern boundaries) running back from both frontages.5 Documents produced in the course of administering the liberty of Cheltenham refer to the via regis, the king’s highway, which is likely to be a reference to this public road running through the liberty. 6 Other forms include ‘the royal way at Herstret’ and ‘the royal way in the way of Cheltenham’ (in via de Cheltenham). Infringements recorded upon the via regis included digging and ploughing, obstruction with timbers and dungheaps, the growth of trees and building of houses.7 The most important local roads were those running from Cheltenham to Gloucester, and Cheltenham to Winchcombe, where the liberty administrators were frequently engaged in defending their lords’ rights. Leland described the roads around Cheltenham, Gloucester and Tewkesbury as ‘subject to al sodeyne risings of Syverne, so that aftar reignes it is very foule to 1 W.S. -

They offer a relaxing, comfortable and tranquil holiday within easy reach of the Royal Forest of Dean, Wye Valley and Vale of Leadon. The surrounding area offers walking, cycling, riding, climbing, canoeing, fishing, quad biking etc, Symonds Yat, Tintern, Monmouth, Clearwell castle, Welsh mountains, Newent, Ross- on-Wye and many other pretty villages and for younger children, Clearwell Caves, Dean Forest Railway, Model Village, Butterfly Zoo and plenty of nature trails etc. -
Stonehouse Brick and Tile Company
Reprinted from: Gloucestershire Society for Industrial Archaeology Journal for 1997 pages 14-26 THE STONEHOUSE BRICK AND TILE COMPANY Ray Wilson Introduction A survey of brickmaking in Gloucestershire published in 1910 reported six brickworks operating in the Stroud and Stonehouse area while a further seven had closed in recent times. (1) Brief details of the thirteen sites are given in Appendix 1. The three sites still working at Stonehouse included that of the Stonehouse Brick and Tile Company Ltd which was the largest of all thirteen sites. Their works covered about 20 acres of land in one tract to the north east of Stonehouse town centre (SO 809052). The brickworks had the benefit of its own private siding as it was situated immediately to the north of the Great Western Railway and just to the east of Stonehouse Burdett Road (GWR) Railway Station. The company started production in 1891 and it was the last of the local brickworks to close when production stopped in 1968. Very little appears to have been written about the history of brickmaking in the Stroud and Stonehouse area. The following is an attempt to record at least some of the history of one of the major local brickworks. It is freely acknowledged that the account given here is far from complete and that the material presented may subsequently require revision. However, it is considered worthwhile to set out what is available now in the hope that it may stimulate interest in the subject. Thus it may be possible that additional sources will be revealed so that some of the gaps can be filled and any mistakes rectified. -
