Kofi Dovlo, PhD Senior Lecturer (Adjunct), Department of Linguistics, University of Ghana, Legon, Accra, Ghana Abstract This paper discusses some basic locative constructions and simple clause structures of English, Akan (a majority language in Ghana), and Safaliba (a minority language in Ghana). Specifically, the paper compares the simple clause of and the basic locative constructions in these three languages by showing clearly how native speakers of these languages produce forms to express meaning. Structures such as clause functions, relative clause, verb forms, serial verb constructions, noun phrase, negation, and locative constructions have been employed as touchstones in juxtaposing the three languages. The data used,were drawn from native speakers’ intuition and expressions about the location of entities (this has been vividly explained in section 1.3). Several obversations were made. For example, it was realised that while English and Safaliba are pre- determiner languages, Akan is post-determiner language. Again as English recognises prepositions, Akan and Safaliba use postposition. Keywords: Basic locative constructions, Simple clause, Akan, Safaliba, Adpositional phrases 1. Stl it’s going t take a litle patence, but we’l go slowly. Before we get t te relatve pronoun per se, we’re going t clean up a syntactcal point you’ve already been working wit, but may not have yet a firm conceptual understanding of. Let’s look at what we mean by a “clause”. THE CLAUSE You al remember te junior high school definiton of a sentnce: it’s a complet tought. And by tat we mean a tought which includes a noun, eiter expressed or implied, and a verb, eiter expressed or implied. Tat is, a complet tought must involve someting which is doing someting or which is being held up for descripton: “Te road is blocked”; “Te tee fel down”; and so on. Now, te human mind is a wonderfl ting. It reasons and perceives dozens of different kinds relatonships between events, tings, and ideas. It arranges events and facts logicaly and tmporaly, and in levels of priorit. Tat is t say, it takes two or more tings, tings which are separat ideas, separat visions, and weaves tem tgeter conceptualy and linguistcaly int what we “reasoning”. Te way tis reasoning is expressed in language is caled “syntax”, which litraly means “arranging tgeter”; puting tgeter events and tings and facts. For example, te two separat ideas or visions -- “te road is blocked” and “te tee fel down” -- might have a causal relatonship, which te mind instantly recognizes and expresses linguistcaly wit an appropriat conjuncton: “Te road is blocked because te tee fel down”. -

Chauncey Brigham Young University As I was pondering my thesis topic a few years ago, Professor Skousen suggested that I do an analysis of the Tagged Brown Corpus. I told him that I wanted to do a thesis in linguistics and that I didn't know anything about performing autopsies. He said it wouldn't really be an autopsy, since the Brown Corpus isn't really dead yet, although it is getting old. So I asked him what the body tag was for. He said it wasn't a body tag; it was grammatical tags. For those of you unfamiliar with the Brown Corpus, it is a corpus of about a million word~ compiled at Brown University (hence the name) by Nelson Francis and Henry Kucera in the early 1960s. -

It is to complete the first question in this research. The researcher had been categorizing the types of phrasal verbs and form that divided into verb and adverb, also sometimes prepositions. 2.1. Types of Phrasal Verbs in movie Snow White and the Huntsman According to Heaton (1985:103) considers that phrasal verbs are compound verbs that result from combining a verb with an adverb or a preposition, the resulting compound verb being idiomatic. Phrasal verb is one of important part of grammar that almost found in English language. Based on Andrea Rosalia in her book “A Holistic Approach to Phrasal Verb”, Phrasal verbs are considered to be a very important and frequently occurring feature of the English language. First of all, they are so common in every day conversation, and non-native speakers who wish to sound natural when speaking this language need to learn their grammar in order to know how to produce them correctly. Secondly, the habit of inventing phrasal verbs has been the source of great enrichment of the language (Andrea Rosalia, 2012:16). A grammarian such as Eduard, Vlad (1998:93) describes phrasal verbs as "combinations of a lexical verb and adverbial particle". It means that the verb if wants to be a phrasal verb always followed by particle. It can be one particle or two particles in one verb. If the case is like that, it called as multi word verbs. -

The "machine" that generates those strings and their corresponding meanings is its grammar. A grammar must specify the following three components: • A lexicon which contains every minimal unit with meaning (= every word, for this course) and its grammatical category; • a syntax, that is, a set of rules that tells you how the minimal units combine to form longer units, how this longer units combine to form yet longer units, and so forth until we form full complex sentences; and • a semantics, which determines what semantic operation or function corresponds to each syntactic rule and combines the “atomic” word meanings to build the meaning of the complete sentence. -

Grammar I’ve heard that Chinese grammar is relatively easy. Is it true? Yes, it is true. While Chinese sound and writing systems can be challenging for some learners, Chinese grammar is rarely deemed difficult. Chinese is not an inflectional language, meaning it does not distinguish gender, person, tense, case, number, etc. Its sentence structures are mostly straightforward, and many of them overlap with English grammar. For example, the common English structure ‘Subject + Verb + Object’ structure, e.g. I love you, or My dog ate my homework, is also widely used in Chinese. What are some of the unique characteristics of Chinese grammar? Adjectives Are Verbs: Adjectives, or stative verbs, function as verbs, and are usually preceded by an intensifier such as ‘hěn’ (very), or ‘yǒudiǎnr’ (a little). Use of shì,verb ‘to be’,as is required in the English grammar (He is tall), is prohibited. Some examples: Zhōngwén hěn róngyì. (‘Chinese very easy.’) → Chinese is easy. Yīngwén yǒudiǎnr nán. (‘English a little hard.’) → English is a little hard. Note that the intensifier is dropped when a comparison is made: Zhōngwén róngyì. (‘Chinese easy.’) → Chinese is easier. Yīngwén nán. (‘English hard.’) → English is harder. Principle of Temporal sequence: Word order in a Chinese sentence can be very different from that in an English one, where the subject and verb often precede other linguistic units such as prepositions and time word, e.g. ‘I went to New York by train with a friend last weekend.’ A Chinese sentence, on the other hand, follows a temporal sequence principle in which word order is determined based on the relative sequence. -

Michael, Chair In this dissertation a methodology for identifying and analyzing serial verb constructions (SVCs) is developed, and its application is exemplified through an analysis of SVCs in Koro, an Oceanic language of Papua New Guinea. SVCs involve two main verbs that form a single predicate and share at least one of their arguments. In addition, they have shared values for tense, aspect, and mood, and they denote a single event. The unique syntactic and semantic properties of SVCs present a number of theoretical challenges, and thus they have invited great interest from syntacticians and typologists alike. But characterizing the nature of SVCs and making generalizations about the typology of serializing languages has proven difficult. There is still debate about both the surface properties of SVCs and their underlying syntactic structure. The current work addresses some of these issues by approaching serialization from two angles: the typological and the language-specific. On the typological front, it refines the definition of ‘SVC’ and develops a principled set of cross-linguistically applicable diagnostics. -

Introduction Phrases and clauses are groups of words that give specific information in a sentence. A clause has both a subject and a predicate, while a phrase does not. Some phrases and clauses function like adverbs, which means they modify a verb, an adjective, or another adverb in a sentence. • An adverb phrase tells “how,” “when,” “where,” or “why.” It is often a prepositional phrase. Soccer players wear protective gear on the field. (tells where; modifies verb wear) Soccer gloves are thick with padding. (tells how; modifies adjective thick) • An adverb clause can also tell “how,” “when,” “where,” or “why.” It is always a dependent clause. Gloves protect goalies when they catch the ball. (tells when; modifies verb protect) Goalies need gloves because the ball can hurt. (tells why; modifies verb need) Guided Practice Circle the word in each sentence that the underlined phrase or clause modifies. Write how, when, where, or why to explain what the phrase or clause tells. Hint 1 Goalies are the only players who touch the ball with their hands.
