Prof. Iacint Manoliu
ISSMGE Bulletin: Volume 12, Issue 4 Page 17 Obituary In Memoriam: Professor Iacint Manoliu (1934 – 2018), by TC306 Professor Iacint Manoliu passed away on June 12, 2018, at a hospital in Bucharest. He is survived by his twin sister Arina, his wife and companion (Sandra) of almost 60 years, his daughter (Mihaela), son (Costin) and grandchild (Victor). May they live a long life to remember him. And how many remarkable things they have to remember! The parents of Iacint, Alexandra and Ioan Manoliu, were professors at two of the most prestigious high schools in Bucharest. Iacint started playing sports early, together with his older sister Lia. At the beginning ping-pong on the dining table, then tennis at the Romanian Tennis Club in Bucharest. In 1948 he became the national tennis champion at the children’s category (under 15). Prior to becoming a construction engineer and teacher, Iacint Manoliu was for 12 years, between 1947 and 1959, sports journalist, editor of “Sportul Popular”, later called “Sportul”. Back row (from left to right): Alexandra and Ioan Manoliu Front row: Iacint, Arina and Lia Manoliu Iacint Manoliu obtained his Engineering (MSc) degree (1957) and PhD in Civil Engineering (1974) from the Technical University of Civil Engineering in Bucharest (UTCB). He started his academic career as a Teaching Assistant (1959–1966), then Assistant Professor (1966–1975), Associate Professor (1975–1982) and Full Professor, always at UTCB. He further served UTCB from the positions of Associate Dean (1972–1976) and Dean (1976–1984), Faculty of Civil, Industrial and Agricultural Buildings, Vice-Rector for Academic and International Affairs (1990–1996), Vice-Rector for International Affairs (1996–2000), and President of the Council for Cooperation and International Relations (2000–2011). -

Focused on solidarity, diversity and excellence, this major sports and cultural event will once again offer French-speaking youth the opportunity to excel and compete in a spirit of exchange, sharing and discovery. This document defines the rules and conditions of pre-selection and selection for each event in the Democratic Republic of Congo/Kinshasa 2022 edition of the Games. Its purpose is to inform member states and governments of the International Franco- phone Organisation (OIF) of the rules. This document of rules is complementary to the “Registration Guide” document. These rules will then be repeated in full in the technical manuals which the CNJF will supply to states and governments for each discipline. The use of masculine in this document is intended to lighten the text. -

M. B 1115, Caalabar- Nigeria. * [email protected] Abstract This study exploits the idea of rethinking culture in Francophonie games using the survey research design. The study conceptualizes Francophonie games into sports and cultural competitions and rethinking culture into physical and non-physical aspects of cultural modifications. Three specific objectives are developed on the basis of the research problem as follows (1) Identify the relationship between the ‘Jeux de la Francophonie’ and the dissemination of the French language (2) identify the various rethinking culture modifications borne out of the Francophonie games, (3) determine the moderating influence of race on rethinking culture and “Jeux de la Francophonie”. Participating athletes in the last concluded “Jeux de la Francophonie” held in Abidjan were interviewed. Secondary sources of data also considered. Findings reveal that the Francophonie games is not a driving factor for the dissemination of the French language among non-French speakers. In addition, sports competition with physical rethinking culture, culture completion has no significant relationship with non-physical rethinking culture in “Jeux de la Francophonie”, and that race does not play a moderating influence in rethinking culture and Francophonie games. The study recommends among other things the introduction of variety of cultural games like voodoo, traditional cooking competition, traditional fashion parade etc. -

Bobby Robinson, a major influence within athletics in Canada at the time, finally implemented the event that had been talked about amongst Commonwealth nations for over thirty years. Eleven countries with 400 athletes in total participated in the first Commonwealth Games. $30,000 was provided by the City of Hamilton to these nations to help cover traveling costs. -

African Studies Quarterly | Volume 10, Issues 2 & 3 | Fall 2008 The 5th Francophonie Sports and Arts Festival: Niamey, Niger Hosts a Global Community SCOTT M. YOUNGSTEDT Abstract: This paper explores transnational and local cultural, political, and economic dimensions of the 5th Jeux de la Francophonie (“Francophonie Games” or “Francophonie Sports and Arts Festival”) held in Niamey, Niger in December 2005. The Jeux were designed to promote peace, solidarity, and cultural exchange through sports and the arts. This paper focuses on the kinds of discourses that were represented and celebrated in the social and political arena of the Jeux. It aims to contribute to the discussion of (1) the politics of Francophonie concept, (2) the negotiation of local and global politics in the context of major sports and arts events, and (3) the representation of local, national, and global politics in public ceremonies. The Francophonie Community Seeks Solidarity through the Universal Languages of Sports and Arts This paper explores transnational and local cultural, political, and economic dimensions of the 5th Jeux de la Francophonie (“Francophonie Games” or “Francophonie Sports and Arts Festival”) held in Niamey, Niger in December 2005.1 Approximately 2,500 athletes and artists, and hundreds of their coaches representing 44 member nations of the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie (OIF) competed in seven sports (track and field, basketball, boxing, soccer, judo, African wrestling, and table tennis) and seven arts (singing, oral storytelling, literature, dancing, painting, photography, and sculpture). While all participants in the Jeux reside in member nations of the OIF, choices of athletes and artists were based on the excellence of their performance and not on French literacy. -
