Family of Jimmy Van Heusen Goes “All the Way” he family of Jimmy Van Heusen has established the Jimmy Van Heusen Award Tat The ASCAP Foundation to honor the legacy of the great American songwriter. Jimmy Van Heusen was one of the most accomplished songwriters from the mid-twentieth century, with countless hits sung and recorded by such American vocal icons as Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Lena Horne and Rosemary Clooney. Some of his most popular songs were written for movies. Teaming up with lyricist Johnny Burke, Van Heusen began writing songs for Paramount Pictures. Together he and Burke wrote the scores for many Bing Crosby movies including Road to Zanzibar, Road to Morocco, Dixie, and Going My Way, among others. Together they won their fi rst Academy Award. Later in his life, Jimmy Van Heusen teamed up with lyricist Sammy Cahn and together they received three Best Song Academy Awards for their works, “All The Way,” “Call Me Irresponsible,” and “High Hopes.” He and Cahn also received an Emmy Award for their American standard “Love and Marriage.” The ASCAP Foundation Jimmy Van Heusen Award will be presented to an outstanding, promising composer who has participated in the ASCAP/NYU Television and Film Scoring Workshop. The award, named after one of their great hit songs, was established to ad- vance the careers of promising songwriters by providing fi nancial assistance for professional recordings of their work.

His role in the resurrection of long neglected woodwind instruments of extreme register, his innovation as a solo woodwind performer, and his reassertion of the composer into what has traditionally been an improvisational form have placed him at the forefront of contemporary music for over five decades. Mr. Mitchell is a founding member of the Art Ensemble of Chicago, the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians and the Trio Space. Additionally, Mr. Mitchell is the founder of the Creative Arts Collective, The Roscoe Mitchell Sextet, The Roscoe Mitchell Quartet, The Roscoe Mitchell Art Ensemble, The Sound Ensemble, The New Chamber Ensemble and the Note Factory. He has recorded over 100 albums and has written hundreds of compositions. His compositions range from classical to contemporary, from passionate and forceful improvisations to ornate orchestral music. His most recent recording, Discussions, was counted among “The 25 Best Classical Music Recordings of 2017” by the New York Times. Also, for five decades, he has designed the Percussion Cage, an elaborate percussion instrument consisting of instruments from around the world, as well as many found instruments.

    eth Weaver is an award-winning trombonist, vocalist, composer, arranger, and educator based in New York City. Originally from Franklin, TN, Seth was already playing and singing professionally in Nashville while still in high school. He completed a Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Studies from the SUniversity of North Texas in 2013 and a Master’s degree in Jazz Studies at the Manhattan School of Music in 2015. Described as a “youthful trombone firebrand pelting NYC with deliciously soulful hard bop” by Michael Dease, an internationally acclaimed jazz trombonist, Seth has quickly established himself as a new voice in the NYC jazz community. As a bandleader, Seth heads a seventeen-piece swing orchestra comprised of some of the most exciting new voices in the New York Jazz scene today. The band has performed in numerous venues around New York City, including The Iridium, Swing 46, Club Bonafide, the APAP Showcase, Shapeshifter Lab, American Beauty, St. Peter’s Church, Zinc Bar, Birdland, and many others. Described as “big band swing with a modern twist,” the group also has a monthly residency at The Speakeasy Sessions (The Gin Mill.) His debut album, Truth, will be released on March 27th through Outside in Music. Seth is a sought-after composer and arranger, and his music has been performed all over the world. His composition “Frost” was debuted at Carnegie Hall in 2018, and he composed the original score for the off- Broadway play, “For What It’s Worth.” Seth’s transcription and analysis of Michael Dease’s album Coming Home are available through Warwick Music Publications.

Wilkommen John Kander (1927 – Present) From Cabaret Based off of the 1951 play by queer playwright John Van Druten, Cabaret was written and premiered in 1966 by John Kander, Fred Ebb, and Joe Masteroff. The play by Van Druten, titled I Am a Camera, was inspired by the 1939 novel by Christopher Isherwood, Goodbye to Berlin. This novel is important in the inception of Cabaret as well as I Am a Camera, as it gives the plot, the conflict, and the characters used throughout the play and the musical.
