We are dedicated to the cultural, musical, and social enrichment of metropolitan Phoenix. We serve the community by providing affordable and accessible performances of choral music from many traditions, eras and cultures. Our repertoire ranges from classical to pop, patriotic, gospel and Broadway. We have released four CDs, have had multiple TV appearances and premiered new works. We are proud to be known as “the choir that cares.” We share our gifts of music, companionship and goods with the needy, ill and homeless. Our local partners include St. Mary’s Food Bank, Lost Our Home, Feed My Starving Children, UMOM shelters, the Banner Alzheimer Institute (BAI), St. Matthew’s School, Duet, and local senior living communities. We perform 3 local concerts per year and have graced the stages of Kennedy Center (Washington, DC), Carnegie Hall and Radio City Music Hall (New York City, NY), the Herberger Theater and Orpheum Theater (Phoenix, AZ). In 2016, the Chorale toured Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic and this year we performed in Ireland, Scotland, England and France. Love to sing? Have you thought about joining the NVC? In opera, music is the primary element, supported by the set and costumes. The set and costumes provide a visual interpretation of the music. In film, music and sound play a supporting role. Music and sound create an ambiance in films that aid in telling the story. I consider the musical to be an equal and reciprocal balance of music and vision. More importantly, a successful musical is defined by its plot, music, and visual elements, and how well they are integrated. Observing the transformation of the musical and analyzing many different genres of concert music, I realize that each new concept of transformation always blends traditional and contemporary elements, no matter how advanced the concept is or was at the time. Through my analysis of three musicals, I shed more light on where this ii transformation may be heading and what tradition may be replaced by a new concept, and vice versa. -
An Afternoon on Broadway Marks the Beginning of the Band’S 33Rd Season
Purpose and History The Community Band of Brevard exists to educate its members, to entertain its audiences, and to serve its community. Our musical director is Mr. Marion Scott. Mr. Scott formed the Band in 1985 to provide a performance outlet for adult musicians in the area. Our membership, currently numbering about 80, includes people of all ages representing many occupations. Most of our concerts have a specific theme upon which the music focuses. Those themes have often led us to include exceedingly difficult works, which we willingly do, and to include special guest artists. The Band gives several concerts throughout the year. Our concerts include many diverse musical genres, composers, and often previously unpublished works for band. Each program is planned to please a variety of musical tastes. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Media Alert for Theatre Editors, Reviewers and Calendar Listings Orange County premiere of Edges Chance Theater returns to live in-person performances for the first musical written by the award-winning songwriters of Dear Evan Hansen, Benj Pasek & Justin Paul ANAHEIM, CA: Chance Theater is excited to announce that the Orange County premiere of Pasek and Paul’s musical, Edges will be the third show in its 23rd Anniversary Season, and the first show presented live and in-person since shutting its doors on March 13, 2020. This clever and charming musical is directed by Resident Artist James Michael McHale and music direction is by Resident Artist Robyn Manion. The show is performing July 9 - August 8, 2021. Before they wrote Dear Evan Hansen, La La Land, The Greatest Showman, Dogfight, and many other modern musical classics, Benj Pasek and Justin Paul wrote a thrilling song cycle about four burgeoning adults asking classic coming-of-age questions about love, commitment, identity, and meaning. For the first time in Orange County, see how the Oscar, Grammy, Tony, and Golden Globe Award-winning song team started their journey — with a charming, witty and honest examination of adulthood that explores what happens when we’re teetering on the edge of the rest of our lives. Please note that this show contains adult language. Back in 2005, Benj Pasek and Justin Paul were undergraduates at the University of Michigan who were feeling dissatisfied with the roles they were being cast in for their college shows. Deciding to do something about it, Pasek and Paul (who had casually written only a couple of songs together at this point) decided to produce their own show -- an original piece called Edges that would be made up entirely of songs they would write and would star fellow college students. -

SEMESTER AT SEA COURSE SYLLABUS Voyage: Summer 2014 Discipline: Drama DRAM 3040: Musical Theatre History Upper Division Faculty Name: Nancy Carr Pre-requisites: None. COURSE DESCRIPTION: Whether you love the classic Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals like The Sound of Music, Stephen Schwartz’s sensation Wicked, the rock musicals American Idiot and Mamma Mia or the new movie musicals Rock of Ages and Les Misérables, this class will examine them all. Taught by a professional actress and professor who currently has a student on Broadway, this class will explore many of Broadway’s milestone musicals complimented by a collection of over 400 video clips, original Broadway cast albums, scores, librettos (scripts), audio clips and photographs. Students will immerse themselves in the world of the musical by studying some of the most influential composers, lyricists, directors, choreographers, and performers that have contributed to the historical development of this art form. By exploring the language of music, the art of drama and the beauty of dance, you will investigate what it takes to bring musicals from the page to the stage, and what makes them triumph or flop. Students will gain insight into what really happens at an audition for a musical, how the world of musical theatre functions and the effect television shows like Glee and Smash as well as the resurgent popularity of movie musicals are having on the future of both the Broadway musical and its audience. Also, we will examine composers from several of the countries visited during the voyage who have had an impact on the development of the musical theatre landscape including Andrew Lloyd Webber (England), Benny Anderson and Björn Ulvaeus (Sweden) and Irving Berlin (Russia), as well as the work of American composers and librettists who have used the countries we are visiting as settings for their musicals. -

Love Makes The World Go Somewhere (“Gabriel’s Letter/My First Woman”) In This Lesson • How bookwriters address matters of love and sex for an increasingly skeptical audience and whether this is necessary or merely a reflection of the moment • How composers deal with romance, including romantic love, heroic adventure and woolgatherers’ dreams • How lyricists strike a balance between sentimentality and honest sentiment in a changing world Overview Whether you agree with Richard Rodgers (“Love Makes The World Go Square” from No Strings) or Bob Merrill (“Love Makes the World Go Round” from Carnival) you will probably agree that love of one kind or another is present in large amounts in most musicals. Love comes in many guises, two of which are exhibited in the selection from The Kiss of the Spider Woman (book by Terrence McNally, music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb) with the double title “Gabriel’s Letter/My First Woman. Gabriel sings about his friend, Molina, an incarcerated gay window-dresser. Valentin, uncomfortable being Molina’s cellmate, sings about his first sexual experience with a woman. Love and sex can be confusing; one without the other can be unsatisfying…or not, depending on the circumstances. Romance is a different word, however. In the past, musical theatre romance almost always meant boy/girl love affairs, and the always ended happily. In recent years this is not always true. The lovers separate at the end of Once. Alexander Hamilton marries a woman he doesn’t love because the woman he does love won’t marry him. -

This year was different only in that we were joined by Lear deBessonet, who will begin her tenure as my successor next season. That only made it more fun, and VIERTEL, we proceeded as if it were any other season. ENCORES! Although we never considered the season a “themed” one— it turned out to have a theme: worlds in transition. And I ARTISTIC suppose my world, and maybe the world of Encores! itself are DIRECTOR about to change too—so it seems appropriate. Love Life is a case in point. Produced in 1948, it is Alan Jay Lerner and Kurt Weill’s only collaboration (they had tremendous success in other collaborations, including My Fair Lady and The Threepenny Opera). -
