Writers in Between Languages 5 Minority Literatures in the Global Scene Writers In Between Languages: This book is a collection of the contributions made by Basque Writers In Between Languages: writers and American and European academics to the internatio- nal symposium, “Writers in Between Languages: Minority Lite- ratures in the Global Scene,” held May 15–17, 2008 at the Center Minority Literatures in the Global Scene for Basque Studies, University of Nevada, Reno, in the United States. Our symposium attempted to think about the consequen- ces of bilingualism for writ ers in a minority language, like Basque, EDITED BY in that they are located in that “in-between” of different cultural Mari Jose Olaziregi and identity communities and subjected to constant exchange and recognition of differences. One could say that practically all the current 800,000 Basque-speakers or euskaldunak who live on both sides of the Pyrenees in Spain and France are bilingual. And that this bilingualism is formed in conjunction with such widely spoken languages as Spanish and such prestigious languages in literary circles as French; lan guages that, in turn, have been displaced by the enormously central and legitimizing place that English occupies in the current global framework. The sympo- sium attempted, moreover, to debate the consequences implied by linguistic extra-territorialization for many authors in a minority language, the realignment implied by the hegemony of Eng lish for E all other literatures, and the options open to a minority author to DIT E get their voice heard in the World Republic of Letters. Mari Jose Olaziregi Introduction MARI JOSE OLAZIREGI This book is a collection of the contributions made by Basque writers and American and European academics to the international symposium, “Writers In Between Languages: Minority Literatures in the Global Scene,” held May 15–17, 2008 at the Center for Basque Studies, University of Nevada, Reno, in the United States.1 If the effects of globalization have come to be understood most prominently at a technical or economic level—giving rise to terms such as “economic liberalization,” “single thought” (pensée unique), “intercon- nectedness,” “deterritorialization,” and “Westernization”—as regards the social, cultural and political spheres, the tendency has been more to emphasize that the global village is not so global. Globalization is not so global after all. New “ethnic landscapes” are the most disturbing form of an unsteady and uneven world;2 a world in which the foreigner has become a symptom.3 Within this context, postcolonialism has developed theories based on concepts like center and periphery, subaltern identities, so-called borderlands thought, or the effect of Creoleness (créolité)—all concepts that have encouraged the sub- version of homogenizing-hierarchical readings.4 Our symposium attempted to think about the consequences of bilingualism for writ- ers in a minority language, like Basque, in that they are located in that “in-between”5 of different cultural and identity communities and subjected to constant exchange and recognition of differences.     Dative (first) complements in Basque BEATRIZ FERNÁNDEZ JON ORTIZ DE URBINA Abstract This article examines dative complements of unergative verbs in Basque, i.e., dative arguments of morphologically “transitive” verbs, which, unlike ditransitives, do not co-occur with a canonical object complement. We will claim that such arguments fall under two different types, each of which involves a different type of non-structural licensing of the dative case. The presence of two different types of dative case in these constructions is correlated with the two different types of complement case alternations which many of these predicates exhibit, so that alternation patterns will provide us with clues to identify different sources for the dative marking. In particular, we will examine datives alternating with absolutives (i.e., with the regular object structural case in an ergative language) and datives alternating with postpositional phrases. We will first examine an approach to the former which relies on current proposals that identify a low applicative head as case licenser. Such approach, while accounting for the dative case, raises a number of issues with respect to the absolutive variant. As for datives alternating with postpositional phrases, we claim that they are lexically licensed by the lower verbal head V.     Journal of World Literature 4 (2019) 188–214 brill.com/jwl The Literary World of the North African Taghrība Novelization, Locatedness and World Literature Karima Laachir SOAS, University of London [email protected] Abstract The novels by North African novelists Waciny Laredj, Majid Toubia and Abdelrahim Lahbibi that refashioned the traditional Arabic genre of the taghrība inspired by the medieval epic of Taghrība of Banū Hilāl, still a living oral tradition in the region, offer an interesting case study of location in world literature. They circulate both within national (Algerian, Egyptian and Moroccan) literary systems and the pan-Arab literary field while maintaining a distinct aesthetic and political locality. In these novels, the literary life of the North African taghrība takes forms and meanings that are geograph- ically and historically located, and that are shaped by the positionality of the authors. This paper intervenes in the discussion on location in world literature from the per- spective of Arabic novelistic traditions by showing that the pan-Arabic literary field itself is far from homogenous but is marked by a diversity of narrative styles and tech- niques that can be both local/localised and transregional at the same time. Therefore, we need to shift our understanding of world literature beyond macro-models of “world- system” that assume a universally-shared set of literary values and tastes.     25 Beyond Language Determinism: Multilingual Literary Traditions in Morocco Karima LAACHIR University of London Linguistic and cultural diversity in the Maghreb have not been explored adequately in the field of literary and cultural studies. This paper raises the problematic separation of the Moroccan novel written in Arabic and French in literary and critical studies. It provides a critique of the way Moroccan novels in French have been excluded from the literary field of Arabic literature despite their strong affiliation with the cultural history of Arabic literature. In the field of Francophone studies, the focus on Moroccan novel in French has completely excluded Moroccan novels in Arabic which has resulted in a shallow conception of the transmitted cultural heritage and in obscuring the cultural histories from which these texts emerge. It also obscures the “cohabitation” of French with other languages in the region (Dobie 2003: 33). This paper argues against these dominant reading practices that are based on linguistic determinism as they have contributed to the marginalisation of Moroccan literary traditions within dominant literary systems such as the Francophone/French or Arabic traditions and therefore, have obscured the cultural, linguistic and historical entanglement of these multilingual literary traditions. Morocco’s complex multilingual scene predated French and Spanish colonialism (1912- 1956) as languages such as Darija or spoken Moroccan Arabic, Fusha or standard Arabic and various spoken dialects of Amazigh, as well as Judeo-Arabic and Judeo-Spanish shaped the oral and written cultures of Morocco. The arrival of French and Spanish languages further complicated the picture, particularly as the French pursued a colonial policy of imposing French as the sole language of education and administration.
