  • {PDF EPUB} the 10 Rules of Rock and Roll by Robert Forster the Ten Rules of Rock and Roll by Robert Forster
Read Ebook {PDF EPUB} The 10 Rules Of Rock And Roll by Robert Forster The Ten Rules of Rock And Roll by Robert Forster. Given that the former Go Between – and half of one of the greatest songwriting alliances ever – has chosen to take as the title of his first collection of rock writing his own Ten Rules of Rock And Roll, it seems only fair that I should repeat them here: 1. Never follow an artist who describes his or her work as ‘dark’. 2. The second-last song on every album is the weakest. 3. Great bands tend to look alike. 4. Being a rock star is a 24-hour-a-day job. 5. The band with the most tattoos has the worst songs. 6. No band does anything new on stage after the first 20 minutes. 7. The guitarist who changes guitars on stage after every third number is showing you his guitar collection. 8. Every great artist hides behind their manager. 9. Great bands don’t have members making solo albums. 10. The three-piece band is the purest form of rock and roll expression. Interestingly, with the possible, albeit tangential, exception of Number 4, he makes no mention of the Rock and Roll Rule that states “Bands featuring music journalists in their ranks are to not to be trusted”. This old chestnut is not a hard and fast one – think of the still relevant contributions made by Chrissie Hynde or Lenny Kaye, Nick Kent or Mick Farren. But it holds sufficiently well that I’m surprised it doesn’t make it to at least sub-clause status here.

Grant McLennan was in a relationship with multi-instrumentalist Amanda Brown when he wrote it. McLennan died in But a week later it was fine. And, I hasten to add, everybody [else] was dead against recording it as well. It just felt like one of the other songs. Because it was so good, I mean, come on The Go-Betweens It was so hooky! It was such a standout. And that was fine by me because I understood that a single had to be treated differently. So it was much more of a studio construction, and maybe the best version of it ever is on the album. It was a nylon-string classical guitar he played the solo on — it might have even been a crappy old guitar of mine that just happened to be lying around. Streets of Your Town has long been identified with Brisbane, and has The Go-Betweens in an advertising campaign by Queensland newspaper the Courier-Mail with the darker lyrics omitted. The Go Between Bridge, spanning the Brisbane The Go-Betweens, is also named after the group. The most important thing I want to say is that Brisbane took it on as their own, so the Brisbane community grabbed it and ran with it, and because of that, for me, the song is about Brisbane. But Amanda will have a different story, and Amanda was a lot closer to Grant than I was.

Life in a Padded Cell: A Biography of Tony Cohen, Australian Sound Engineer by Dale Blair ©copyright ~ One ~ Satan has possessed your Soul! ‘Tony is very devout in “God’s Lesson”. I cannot speak highly enough of Tony’s manners and behaviour. They are beyond reproach’. It was the sort of report card every parent liked to see. It was 1964. The Beatles were big and Tony Cohen was a Grade One student at St. Francis de Sales primary school, East Ringwood. The following year he took his first communion. The Beatles were still big and there seemed little to fear for the parents of this conscientious and attentive eight-year-old boy. The sisters who taught him at that early age would doubtless have been shocked at the life he would come to lead – a life that could hardly be described as devout. Tony Cohen was born on 4 June 1957 in the maternity ward of the Jessie MacPherson hospital in Melbourne. Now a place specializing in the treatment of cancer patients it was a general hospital then. He was christened Anthony Lawrence Cohen. His parents Philip and Margaret Cohen had been living in James Street, Windsor, but had moved to the outer eastern suburb of East Ringwood prior to the birth of their son. Philip Cohen was the son of Jewish immigrants who had left Manchester, England, and settled in Prahran, one of Melbourne’s inner eastern suburbs. Philip’s father had served in the First World War, survived and then migrated to Australia with his wife and infant son (Tony’s Uncle David).

SYNOPSIS The Go-Betweens : Part Company is the feature length documentary about the people who created the seminal rock band the Go-Betweens. © JEREMY BANNISTER It is a heartfelt story of discovery, uncovering the intensely passionate, creative and fraught relationships that formed one of the most loved and influential bands in Australian rock history. It is also the universal story of a great creative adventure that spanned three decades, through countless successes, failures, romances, break-ups, betrayals, triumphs and tragedies. The Go-Betweens: Part Company is a compelling investigation into the exhilarating, unpredict- able, and precarious lives of musicians, that reveals the true price paid by them to pursue their art. Directed by Kriv Stenders. The Go-Betweens: Part Company doesn’t assume knowledge of the band or their music, rather it offers an evolving revelation of them that truthfully exposes all the highs, the lows, the joy, the pain, the sorrow, and the beauty of being in a cult band and of trying to survive the harsh and brutal realities of an exploitative music industry.

  • Parody As a Borrowing Practice in American Music, 1965–2015
Parody as a Borrowing Practice in American Music, 1965–2015 A dissertation submitted to the Graduate School of the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Division of Composition, Musicology, and Theory of the College-Conservatory of Music by John P. Thomerson BM, State University of New York at Fredonia, 2008 MM, University of Louisville, 2010 Committee Chair: bruce d. mcclung, PhD ABSTRACT Parody is the most commonly used structural borrowing technique in contemporary American vernacular music. This study investigates parody as a borrowing practice, as a type of humor, as an expression of ethnic identity, and as a response to intellectual trends during the final portion of the twentieth century. This interdisciplinary study blends musicology with humor studies, ethnic studies, and intellectual history, touching on issues ranging from reception history to musical meaning and cultural memory. As a structural borrowing technique, parody often creates incongruity—whether lyrical, stylistic, thematic, evocative, aesthetic, or functional—within a recognized musical style. Parodists combine these musical incongruities with other comic techniques and social conventions to create humor. Parodists also rely on pre-existing music to create, reinforce, and police ethnic boundaries, which function within a racialized discourse through which parodists often negotiate ethnic identities along a white-black binary. Despite parody’s ubiquity in vernacular music and notwithstanding the genre’s resonance with several key themes from the age of fracture, cultivated musicians have generally parody. The genre’s structural borrowing technique limited the identities musicians could perform through parodic borrowings. This study suggests several areas of musicological inquiry that could be enriched through engagement with parody, a genre that offers a vast and largely unexplored repertoire indicating how musical, racial, and cultural ideas can circulate in popular discourse.
