IN MEMORIAM Eugene Pleasants Odum (1913-2002) Eugene Pleasants Odum was an American biologist well known for his pioneering subtle approach, hard work and very valuable results on ecosystem ecology. Born in September 1913, while his mother was in holiday on Lake Sunapee in New Hampshire to escape the summer heat of Athens, Georgia (USA), he was the son of Howard Washington Odum, a respected scholar in social justice, whose studies of integrated concepts, were certainly an influence on, his son's holistic approach and concepts. Eugene Odum's studies in zoology started at the age of 15 at the University of North Carolina, when he developed a major interest in ornithology and avian ecology that was to last all his life. Eugene and Martha Huff Odum, whom he had met as a student, moved to the University of Georgia in 1940, where he served his entire career. In 1946, trying to highlight the fact that ecology was not simply a basic discipline of biology, he began writing the first edition of Fundamentals of Ecology (1953). Later in his life he admited that one of his most satisfying accomplishments was his success in revealing that ecology is not a subdiscipline of biology but a stand-alone discipline. He worked with his younger brother Howard Thomas Odum, on several major projects including: the second edition of Fundamentals of Ecology, published in 1959; The energetic Basis for Valuation of Ecosystem services, published in 2000. Through her skilled paintings, his wife enriched Eugene′s perspective of nature. Eugene and Martha′s son was a professor of environmental science at the University of Virginia. Eugene Pleasants Odum carrer shows a clear uninterrupted intellectual growth, evolving from a bird ecologist to an ecosystem ecologist and overall a holistic thinker in his late years. He supported the establishment of the Savannah River Ecology Laboratory, the Sapelo Island Marine Institute, and the world famous Institute of Ecology. He stressed the role of mutualism, the mechanism of ecosystem development, and energetics as a comon denominator across different levels of organization. He was also a philanthropist providing funding for his programmes, an environmentalist recognizing the need to protect ecological systems, and a teacher promoting integrative science. He was a relentless birdwatcher, a tireless traveler, and an enthusiastic organic gardener until his death. Although encouraged to retire officially in 1984, he continued to devote his time to writing, contributing to research publications and the fifth edition of Fundamentals of Ecology (2005). In addition to his reputation as a research ecologist, Eugene Pleasants Odum also became a respected environmentalist during the decade of environment and was quoted frequently in Time, Newsweek amd Life magazines. He played a major role in the passing of the Coastal Marshlands Protection Act of 1990 in the State of Georgia. He designated in his will that more than half his 26 acre estate at Beech Creek be placed in permanent conservation protection, thus providing habitat for the wildlife he loved. Eugene Pleasants Odum's legacy of generosity, subtle intelligence and capacity of understanding nature, will benefit generations in pursuit of education, research and service of nature. This was conducted by enumerating and identifying fish species composition, meas- uring the fish length, fish weight, assessing the fish abundance and biomass, determining the length-weight relationships and the length-frequency of the fishes. Altogether, 592 fishes were sampled comprising twenty-eight (28) species belonging to sixteen (16) families. The families identified included: Cichlidae, Mormyridae, Clariidae, Channidae, Malapteruridae, Gymnar- chidae, Bagridae, Mochokidae, Polypteridae, Pantodontidae, Abstract Schilbeidae, Anabantidae, Osteoglossidae, Characidae, No- topteridae and Distichodontidae. The family Mormyridae was the most abundant with 163 members followed by Cichlidae with 161 members. The least represented family was Schilbeidae with only two (2) members.     La biodiversité en Côte d’Ivoire : Etat des lieux et facteurs de menace 5 Biodiversity of Côte d’Ivoire: Current state and threats L’une des caractéristiques les plus fascinantes de la nature est la diversité des êtres vivants dont elle regorge. La biodiversité est définit simplement comme la diversité de toutes les formes du vivant, incluant la diversité génétique, spécifique et écosystémique. Elle constitue la toile de la vie terrestre et aquatique dont nous sommes partie intégrante et dont nous dépendons totalement pour notre bien être et notre survie. Elle atteint son maximum dans les régions tropicales dont les forêts abritent plus de 50 % de la diversité biologique mondiale. En Côte d’Ivoire, la conservation de la biodiversité est une question majeure au regard de son importance et des menaces fréquentes qui pèsent sur elle. En effet, de par la diversité et la particularité de sa flore et de sa faune, la Côte d’Ivoire fait partie des zones prioritaires de conservationhot ( spot de biodiversité) en Afrique de l’Ouest. Cependant cette diversité biologique est fortement menacée par de nombreux facteurs dont les plus importants sont la déforestation, l’agriculture non durable, le braconnage, la pollution et les changements climatiques. Ces menaces qui affectent considérablement aussi bien les écosystè- mes que les organismes vivants qu’ils abritent, ont un effet déterminant sur l’économie et la qualité de la vie humaine. Ce chapitre a pour objectif de faire un état des lieux de la biodiversité en Côte d’Ivoire et d’identifier les facteurs pouvant menacer sa conservation. Il comprend trois parties qui s’articulent autour des composantes essentielles de la biodiversité.

HOPKINS Division of Biological Sciences Section of Neurobiology and Behavior Cornell University Ithaca, New York SUMMARY There are over 200 species of fishes belonging to the African family Mormyridae, making it the largest single group of electrogenic fishes. All of the mormyrids produce weak electric discharges by a highly specialized electric organ in the tail, and all possess at least three major classes of electroreceptors: ampullary, used in prey detection and predator avoidance; mormyromasts, used for active electroloca­ tion; knollenorgans, used for social communication. The mormyrids may be divided into three main subfamilies, based on external morphology and bone structure: there is 1 species in the Gymnarchinae; there are over 20 in the Petrocephalinae, which has a single genus, Petrocephalus; and there are over 170 species in the subfamily Mormyrinae . Recent field recordings of the electric signals have made it possible to distinguish between sibling species . The diversity of electric discharges plays a vital role in species and in sex recognition. Mormyrids occur in virtually every type of freshwater habitat in Africa, but they -: ' are primarily river specialists. Many species migrate laterally from rivers or streams into flooded areas for reproduction . Little is known about the breeding and nesting behavior of mormyrids except for Gymnarchus, which produces a large floating nest and has an elaborate system of parental care, and Pollimyrus isidori, which has been observed to build nests and show male parental care in aquarium observations.
