He dedicado mi vida a creer en las diferencias.” Estas palabras de sabiduría, que vinculan la diversidad cultural con lo universal humano, son las del gran historiador Miguel León-Portilla, que desempeñó un papel importante en la historia de las relaciones entre México y la UNESCO, como representante permanente de su país entre 1987 y 1992. Miguel León-Portilla, que falleció el 1 de octubre de 2019 a la edad de 93 años, encarnaba la comunidad de valores que existe entre la UNESCO y México. México, que fue uno de los Estados fundadores de la UNESCO y país anfitrión de la segunda reunión de la Conferencia General, estableció rápidamente una estrecha relación con la Organización. Jaime Torres Bodet, que fue Director General de la UNESCO de 1948 a 1952, dejó su huella en esos primeros años de entusiasmo y ambición. Apodado el “gran impul- sor” por los autores del libro, Torres Bodet fue capaz de insuflar una visión en la UNESCO. Pudo hacerlo porque era un gran administrador, pero también un poeta amante del huma- nismo, como demuestran estos versos: “Un hombre muere en mí siempre que un hombre, / muere en cualquier lugar, asesinado / por el miedo y la prisa de otros hombres”. Desde entonces la relación entre México y la UNESCO se siguió profundizando mediante la organización de la primera Conferencia Mundial sobre la Mujer en 1975 en la Ciudad de México o con motivo de la Conferencia Mundial sobre las Políticas Culturales (MONDIACULT) en 1982, en la que se reafirmó la igual dignidad de todas las culturas. El año pasado también fue fructífero, en particular debido a la inscripción conjunta con España, en la Lista Representativa del Patrimonio Cultural Inmaterial de la Humanidad, del Proceso de fabricación de la talavera artesanal de Puebla y Tlaxcala.

The following list of grasses, based entirely upon specimens in the United States National Herbarium, is a preliminary paper, in which the scattered data upon Mexican grasses have been brought together and arranged in a convenient form. The species included have been accepted, for the most part, in their traditional sense. It has been impracticable to examine the types of many of the earlier described species since these specimens are located in European herbaria. For this reason the synonymy has been confined mostly to those names that could be fixed by an examination of American types, or concerning the application of which there was little doubt. The largest number of unidentified names are found in Fournier's work on Mexican grasses.1 This results from the incomplete or unsatis- factory descriptions and from the fact that the specimens cited under a given species either may not agree with the diagnosis, or may belong to two or more species, at least in different herbaria. An examination of the original specimens will undoubtedly lead to the identification of the greater part of these names. There are several specimens that have been omitted from the list because they have not been identified and are apparently unde- scribed species. They belong to genera, however, that are much in need of critical revision and further study of them is deferred for the present. In subsequent articles it is hoped to work out the classifi- cation of the tropical American grasses upon a type basis KEY TO THE GENEBA.

    Seventy-first session United Nations The Sustainable Development Goals: General Assembly a universal push to transform our world President of the seventy-first session of the United Nations General Assembly H. E. Mr. Peter Thomson On 13 June 2016, the United Nations General Assembly elected Ambassa- dor Peter Thomson of Fiji to serve as President of its seventy-first session, which runs from September 2016 to September 2017. Ambassador Thomson took office in New York as Fiji’s Permanent Repre- sentative to the United Nations in February 2010, serving concurrently as Fiji’s Ambassador to Cuba until assumption of his duties as President of the UN General Assembly’s seventy-first session. Ambassador Thomson held office as Vice-President of the UN General Assembly in 2011-2012. He was elected as President of the Assembly of the International Seabed Authority’s 2011-2012 session and then as President of the Council of the Authority’s 2015-2016 session. For the duration of 2013, he chaired the United Nations’ largest negotiating bloc, the Group of 77 and China. From January 2014 to January 2015, he served as President of the Executive Board of UN Development Programme/UN Population Fund/UN Office for Programme Support (UNDP/UNFPA/UNOPS). Between 1972 and 1987, he was a civil servant in the Government of Fiji working in the fields of rural development and then foreign affairs. It is part of the more extensive Sierra Madre de Oaxaca, a priority region for biological research and conservation efforts because of its high levels of biodiversity. A floristic study was conducted in the highlands of the Sierra Mazateca (at altitudes of ca. 1,000–2,750 m) between September 1999 and April 2002, with the objective of producing an inventory of the vascular plants found in this region. Cloud forests are the predominant vegetation type in the highland areas, but due to widespread changes in land use, these are found in different levels of succession. This contribution presents a general description of the sampled area and a checklist of the vascular flora collected during this study that includes 648 species distributed among 136 families and 389 genera. The five most species-rich angiosperm families found in the region are: Asteraceae, Orchidaceae, Rubiaceae, Melastomataceae, and Piperaceae, while the largest fern family is Polypodiaceae.
