Such explanations often characterize Islamist movements as “political” or “militant” when they contest state power, and as “civil” or “apolitical” when they do not. This dissertation seeks to overcome the prevailing typological tendencies in the literature and to rethink the conventional dichotomies of the political and the social. The dissertation examines a religious pedagogical movement in Turkey that eschews conventional institutions of politics, and focuses, on the surface, on “teaching religion to fellow Muslims.” In doing so, it aims to explain why, how, and with what consequences social movements challenge the state’s monopoly over forming and reforming individuals, their morality, subjectivity, and culture. The dissertation draws on eighteen months of fieldwork in Turkey in formal and clandestine sites of religious socialization and pedagogy, one hundred interviews with key local and national actors, and archival work in national libraries. The ii dissertation makes three contributions to the study of social movements, politics, and social change. First, it advances the social movement literature by documenting how presumably non- political movements that appear on the surface to be concerned with moral reform are in fact deeply political and transformative in nature. Second, it deepens and broadens theories of social and cultural reproduction by demonstrating the centrality of a relatively understudied field—the field of religious socialization/pedagogy—to struggles over creating “orthodoxy” or “correct” forms of knowledge. Third, by extending the study of religious mobilization to a traditionally secular political system, it enlarges the scope of the literature on Islamization, pietism, and sociopolitical change and lays the groundwork for future comparative studies. iii The dissertation of Zeynep Ozgen is approved. • Bir Keşf-I Kadim Olarak Büyük Doğu Ve Necip Fazıl
Bir Keşf-i Kadim Olarak Büyük Doğu Ve Necip Fazıl BİR KEŞF-İ KADİM OLARAK BÜYÜK DOĞU VE NECİP FAZIL Büyük Doğu yani “Doğunun doğuşu”. “Büyük Doğu, İslamiyet’in emir subaylığı…” Yani Allah Resulü (s.a.v.) ve sahabeden intikal eden manaya bağlı kalmak Büyük Doğu’nun esasını teşkil eder. İlkeleri Büyük Doğu’nun mazrufunda pazarlıksız iman, tefekkür, amel ve dava şuuru vardır. Orada “iman” her şeyden öndedir.

Nefislerimizin şerlerinden, amellerimizin kötülüklerinden Allah'a sığınırız. • Museum of the Moving Image Presents Comprehensive Terrence Malick Retrospective
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MUSEUM OF THE MOVING IMAGE PRESENTS COMPREHENSIVE TERRENCE MALICK RETROSPECTIVE Moments of Grace: The Collected Terrence Malick includes all of his features, some alternate versions, and a preview screening of his new film A Hidden Life November 15–December 8, 2019 Astoria, New York, November 12, 2019—In celebration of Terrence Malick’s new film, the deeply spiritual, achingly ethical, and politically resonant A Hidden Life, Museum of the Moving Image presents the comprehensive retrospective Moments of Grace: The Collected Terrence Malick, from November 15 through December 8. The films in the series span a period of nearly 50 years, opening with Malick’s 1970s breakthroughs Badlands (1973) and Days of Heaven (1978), through his career-revival masterworks The Thin Red Line (1998) and The New World (2005), and continuing with his 21st- century films—from Cannes Palme d’Or winner The Tree of Life (2011); the trio of To the Wonder (2012), Knight of Cups (2015), and Song to Song (2017); and sole documentary project Voyage of Time (2016)—through to this year’s A Hidden Life. Two of these films will be presented in alternate versions—Voyage of Time and The New World—a testament to Malick’s ambitious and exploratory approach to editing. In addition to Malick’s own feature films, the series includes Pocket Money (1972), an ambling buddy comedy with Lee Marvin and Paul Newman, which he wrote (but did not direct), and Thy Kingdom Come (2018), the documentary featurette shot on the set of To the Wonder by photographer Eugene Richards.

The creation of a South-Slavic State would take place through the economic integration of Serbia and Bulgaria, which, by improving their economic position, would simultaneously strengthen their political situation and join Macedonia. Boev’s views are presented on the basis of speeches given during the Student Balkan Congress in Sofia on 6–8 March (22–24 February old style) 1904, and subsequently published in the Journal of the Bulgarian Economic Society as “Посещението на Сръбски крал и сръбско-българското сближение” [The Visit of the King of Serbia and the Serbian-Bulgarian Rapprochement] and “Балканската федерация като идеал на сръбско-българската младеж” [The Balkan Federation as the Ideal of the Bulgarian-Serb Youth]. Keywords: Bulgaria, Serbia, Bulgarian-Serbian relations, Balkan federalism, South Slavs. INTRODUCTION The Bulgarian-Serbian relations in the second half of the 19th and early 20th Cen- tury were not friendly in many aspects, among others in the field of politics. While in the 1860s there had been projects of rapprochement between these two Slavic na- tions, such as the Bulgarian Leagues in Belgrade or the Yugoslav Tsardom, in later years more and more areas of conflict appeared.

Journal of Danubian Studies and Research Dimensions of Cultural Variability among Local Communities in the Town of Ruse (1878-1920 Years) Lilyana Slavianova1, Rozalina Bozhilova-Kouncheva2 Abstract: The aim of this paper is to explore culture as a dynamic system affected by various factors. It looks at the political and environmental factors that influence the development of the town of Ruse at the beginning of the 20 the century. It also seeks to find out how the dynamics of the political situation in the Balkans and the extreme influence of the river Danube acted on the town and its population. The analysis is based on the exploration of cultural variability according to the views of Kluckhohn and Strodbeck, Edward Hall and Geert Hofstede and states the extent to which the ethnic groups living on the territory of the town of Ruse in the reviewed period illustrate them. Theoretical clarification of cultural variability and practical research of how it is addressed in the material and spiritual context has been made. The findings from this analysis illustrate that the ethnic communities in Ruse during that period combine the contemporary concepts of multiculturalism and the variance of values traced in a diachronic aspect. The research results also reveal that the local community of Ruse and its contacts with other cultural communities are based on established attitudes of tolerance and sustainability and continuity of values that can be given as a good example in a time of growing multiculturalism and globalization, both in Europe and worldwide. It can initiate a further discussion concerning notions as multiculturalism and cultural variability on the territory of the Danube region in the period of transition and democracy.

20 August 2018 Federal Trade Commission Office of the Secretary 600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW Suite CC-5610 (Annex C) Washington, D.C. 20580 Dear Chairman Simons and Commissioners Ohlhausen, Phillips, Chopra, and Slaughter: We submit this filing in response to the Federal Trade Commission’s request for comments in anticipation of the “Competition and Consumer Protection in the 21st Century Hearings” (Project Number P181201) later this year. In these comments, we are pleased to share our thoughts in response to the suggested topics related to competition and consumer protection issues in communication, information, and media technology networks, as well as the role of intellectual property and competition policy in promoting innovation. CreativeFuture is a coalition of Americans who create – over 540 organizations and companies and over 190,000 individuals. We make our living creating in film, television, music, book publishing, and photography. Our nation’s creative economy, the world’s best, is under siege by digital piracy because ever-evolving technologies facilitate the unauthorized duplication and distribution of our valuable creative works – among them, internet platforms, that wittingly or unwittingly serve the interests of illegal enterprises around the world. In short, our creative communities are victimized by the unfair, deceptive, and anticompetitive practices that continue to be rampant on the internet and are facilitated by a variety of large internet platforms. While the internet has undoubtedly had significant benefits for many creatives, ultimately the current situation has not only hurt the creative communities, but has also harmed consumers and the public good. A large number of Americans agree that the government must act to keep Silicon Valley in check.
