One Ukrainian Jew, Egor, who made aliyah, a year ago, returned to Odessa for his fiancé who was with him on Ebenezer's ship. He was upset that many of those on board in his estimation weren't really Jews. Of course the biggest question in Israel is “Who is a Jew?” Standing on the deck of the ship as it was passing Instanbul, Turkey, Egor said in broken English, "Probably one third are not really Jews. The Jewish Agency in the Ukraine is giving them visas if they have just one great grandpar- ent who was a Jew and that is illegal according to Israeli law. Then look, they married non-Jews and with all their children they have been allowed to make aliyah and bring these non-Jewish families to Israel where they will become citizens. To me, it's watering down the Jewish State and it’s not right.” Despite this underlying conflict, Ebenezer's representative in charge of the voyages believes that in 1998 there will be even more ships sailing to Israel. Vad- im, a 31-year-old Believer, says, “God will take more of these Jewish people out whether through Ebenezer or by other people using ships.” With anti-Semitism now sweeping the former Soviet Union, Ebenezer vol- Perspective on the Pastst unteers have gone into remote areas on “fishing expeditions.” Although they're not allowed to share the Gospel of Yeshua, they are able to tell Russian Jews OffersOffers HopeHope for the Futurere about the importance of making aliyah (returning to Israel) and its prophetic ContinuedContinued ffromrom theth front page fulfillment. “When we speak to Jewish people at synagogues and elsewhere, we start by telling them that we are volunteers from the Christian organization, Ebenezer, which helps Jewish people return to their home country, explains Shirley Lawrenson, a South African volunteer who has been on 13 voyages. They are very touched by us. I have seen many times tears in their eyes because they have never experienced so much love from a group of non-Jewish people who want to help them in. In the past they’ve only experienced persecution from non-Jews.” In addition, Lawrenson says, “It’s a thrill to be on the ship with all of these Jews, who are making aliyah, and especially seeing the ones that you ‘fished’ or helped move belongings from their apartments.” Wicks says a large number of Holocaust survivors were aboard, and during the four day journey they recalled some of their experiences. “They told us about the camps and about the way their people were tor- tured. They were treated like animals. These people saw terrible atrocities and they lived in fear of who would be next. They said they prayed to die,” recalls Wicks. However, many other passengers felt they were on the “Love Boat.” It was the first time they'd been on a Ukrainian cruise ship. To an American it was an old ship, but to these Ukrainians it was luxury at its finest. September/October 2017 The Messianic Times 17 HolyDays The Ten Days of Awe: Piety and Uncertainty by Olivier Melnick

Passover (Pesach) was fulfilled by His death, First Fruits by His resurrection, and the Feast of Weeks (Shavuot) by the birth of the Body of Messiah. These are followed by the Fall Feast that seem to point us to God’s end-time program. The Feast of Trumpets (Rosh HaShanah) relates to the call that will herald the end times, (Yom Kippur) might be prophetically be consummated by the Great Tribulation, and Tabernacles (Sukkot) by the advent of the Millennial Kingdom of Messiah.

That day is known as Shabbat Shuvah, or the Shabbat of Repentance and is probably one of the most observed of the Jewish calendar. Great emphasis is placed on connecting or reconnecting with family, friends and co-workers to establish forgiveness. Jewish people spend a great deal of time examining their own lives and personal relationships. Despite a fear-driven piety, traditional Jews still have no guarantee that God will look favorably on them. The great reformer of early Judaism, Rabbi Yochanan Ben Zakkai, wept on his deathbed. The Great Torah Roll by June Levine The air was brisk, unmistakably October. Our neighborhood was brimming with singing and laughter as a procession of lights emerged from the tiny synagogue. Candles were affixed into the shiny red, cored apples, which had been stuck onto the thin wooden dowels of hand-colored paper flags. The songs were in Yiddish. The voices were innocent and clear. Tonight was Simchat Torah (Rejoicing with the Torah), the culmination of a season of holy days. As the rabbi and then other adults carried the scrolls around the building and outside, performing seven hakafot (circuits), we children followed with our songs and flags and apples and candles, in what felt like the happiest day of the Jewish year. We followed the Torah as if it were our moral compass, our holy grail. We felt joy, pride, and purpose. —June Levine’s fond memories of Simchat Torah are interspersed throughout this article.

Place which explains the élégance of this traditional food. one tablespoon of schmaltz or butter in a large skillet and caramelize the onions over medium high. Add a pinch of salt and pepper. Watch and toss, or they will burn. Add a few teaspoons of water regularly throughout the sautéing to keep moist. Once the onions are soft and dark golden brown, set aside. Do not rinse the skillet. Add the last two teaspoons of schmaltz and the livers, garlic and parsley, and another small pinch of salt and pepper. Cook them covered, over medium heat, so the steam and water will become part of the cooking. Add a bit of water from what is left from the original cup if the skillet gets too dry. Once the livers are cooked, add the reserved onions to the mix, and toss and cook for another two minutes over medium-low heat. Sprinkle 1/4 cup of cognac and flambée (ignite) the whole mix. Be careful not to keep your face too close to the skillet as you strike the match, or you could get burned (the flame will not last long but it will go high). Make sure to shake the skillet while the flame is lit. Put 1/3 of the liver/onion mix in a food processor with one egg cut in half and chop it fine. If it appears mushy or even wet, don’t worry. It settles later. Repeat until the mix is chopped. Add a little salt if needed as you place the mix in a bowl and can still toss it around. Put the covered bowl in the fridge and settle for at least an hour.
