This Unit would introduce you to: 9 the policy pursued by different Mughal Emperors towards the Deccan states; 9 the factors that determined the Deccan policy of the Mughals, and the ultimate outcome of the struggle between the Mughals and the Deccan states. - 9.1 INTRODUCTION - In Unit 8 of this Block you have learnt how the independent Sultanates of Ahmednagar, Bijapur, Golkonda, Berar and Bidar had been established in the Deccan. We have already discussed the development of these states and their relations to each other (Unit 8). Here our focus would be on the Mughal relations with the Deccan states. The Deccan policy of the Mughals was not determined by any single factor. The strategic importance of the Decen states and the administrative and economic necessity of the Mughal empire largely guided the attitude of the Mughal rulers towards the Deccan states. Babar, the first Mughal ruler, could not establish any contact with Deccan because of his pre-occupations in the North. Still, his conquest of Chanderi in 1528 had brought the Mugllal empire close to the northern cbnfines of Malwa. -

Research Paper Volume : 2 | Issue : 8 | AugustHistory 2013 • ISSN No 2277 - 8179 Politico-Administrative Developments in the KEYWORDS : Deccan, Shahjahan, Deccan Under Shahjahan Administration, Taqavi, Malik Ambar Lucky Khan Research Scholar (HISTORY), Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh ABSTRACT In the present paper an attempt has been made to analyse the political and administrative developments in the Deccan under the Emperor Shahjahan (1628-1658 A.D). The paper has been divided into two sections the first part deals with the political developments while the administration has been discussed in the second section. The Deccan however a different entity from that of the North India but attempts had always been made by the rulers to conquer it whether it was the Sultanate period or the Mughal rule. With the coming of the Mughals in the Deccan, the politico-administrative conditions of the Deccan had underwent certain changes according to the need of the time and in this paper I tried to discuss what has happened in the Deccan under Shahjahan. Both the vedic and the Gandharva systems of music were nurtured in the hermitage of Rishis. Of course the kings who were the disciples of those great teachers give proper scopes for the demonstrations of their musical teachings. After the end of Pouranic period a vast culture of music and arts grew up in India as integral parts of the temple worship. The same culture was propagated by the kings in the royal courts as those notable men were devoted to the deity of the temples. Thus the development of the classical music or Marga sangeet of India lay in the hands ofthe priest classes attached to the temples with the patronage of the kings. The demonstrations took place both in the temples well as in the royal palaces. These temples and palaces contained spacious hall for staging demonstrations of the music, dance and the theatres. The kings used to preserve the lines of top ranking artists attached to the temples and courts by providing fixed allowances and rent - free pieces of lands handed over to them for their hereditary possesion and enjoyment. -

INTRODUCTION 1.1. Profile of the Study Area 1.1.1. Hyderabad Hyderabad, the capital of Andhra Pradesh (see maps pp. 5-7), is the fifth largest city in India with a population of 4.2 million and an ancient culture and civilization. Hyderabad is proud of its wealth in varieties of cultures and the unique position it has in the history of the country. This cosmopolitan city is also known as the city of minarets due to the presence of several mosques displaying huge minarets. Art, architecture, culture, groups of people, and religions form a unique blend in Hyderabad. Over the centuries, this variety evolved into a great integrated cultural landscape. Charminar, the four-towered structure standing at the intersection of the four main streets of the city, has become the symbol of the city, like the Eiffel Tower of Paris, the Statue of Liberty in New York, or West Minister Abbey in London. Charminar, according to Lynton and Rajan (1987:3), “had been built in 1589 by Mohammad-Quli Qutub Shah, the king whose seat was Golconda Fort some fifteen miles away (from Hyderabad city), to commemorate the spot where he caught his first glimpse of Bhagmati, the Hindu girl who captured his heart and in time became his queen”. -

Akbar and his religious policy Akbar is often considered as national king who united all sections of the people and he is also said to have been secular ruler who kept his personal religious ideas from framing state policies and adopted policy of religious tolerance. There are two questions which primarily arises before the historiens in regard to Akbar’s religious policy: 1. To what extent Akbar’s personal believes had influenced in his state policies? And 2. What was the response of his subjects to his state policies? There are few reasons why Akbar became secular king. 1. He was influenced by teachings of his broad-minded mother, teacher and his relatives. 2. He was influenced by the prominent cultural ethos of timurid polity-YasaE-Chingesi(treating all the religions alike) 3. The increasing presence of Irani nobles at Humayun’s had created an atmosphere for Akbar to learn religious tolerance. 4. His childhood psychology fearing about god shaped his religious outlook. For instance, abul- fazl states, as akbar says” if he had displeased God in any manner, 'may that elephant finish us for we cannot support the burden of life under God's displeasure.'” 5. His personal engagement in Islamized version of greek philosophy through Shaikh Mubaraq and his sons faizi and abul-fazl shaped his religious world outlook through Ibadatkana debates from 1575- 1578. Akbar was, in his early part of reign, following intolerant policies towards non-muslims as the following statements testify: One knows from unimpeachable evidence, including some of Akbar's own sayings recorded after 1581 that in his early years he was not only a practising Muslim but also had a very intolerant attitude htowards Hindus. -

Power, Presents, and Persuasion: Early English Diplomacy with Mughal India ETHAN CARLSON It was the first of September in 1617 in the Mughal Empire. The Mughal Empire, consisting roughly of modern day India, Bengal, Pakistan, and much of Afghanistan, was ruled by the Mughal Dynasty, a powerful Muslim dynasty that ruled India for centuries. The first of September in 1617 was the celebration of the birthday of the Mughal Emperor Jahangir. Sir Thomas Roe, English Ambassador to the Mughal Court at the time, was in attendance. He entered a beautiful garden filled with flowers and trees with a pond in the center, a part of the palace where the ceremony was being held. All around the garden were beams, scales, and massive chains of gold, as well as countless rubies, turquoise, and other valuable stones. Into this scene entered Jahangir, covered from head to toe in diamonds, rubies, pearls, and other precious things. Sir Thomas Roe could only stand and marvel.1 After entering, Jahangir climbed onto one side of a giant set of scales. This was the ceremonial “weighing” of the Emperor. It occurred on every birthday and displayed the wealth of the Mughal Empire. On the other side of the scales various bags were heaped. First gold and jewels, then cloth of gold and silks, then spices, and so on in that fashion, until the bags had been changed a total of six times. As Jahangir, with garments, weighed roughly 250 lbs., the amount of wealth weighed at this time was immense. In fact, the amount of wealth displayed was so immense that even Roe doubted what he saw, and wondered if all the containers of the wares were truly filled with those items only and not augmented with rocks.2 This story serves to illustrate the complexity early European ambassadors faced in Asia. -

Page 1 of 6 Later Mughal Emperors (1707-1857 A.D.) The Mughal Empire was vast and extensive in the beginning of the eighteenth century. But by the close of the century it had shrunk to a few kilometres around Delhi. After the death of Aurangzeb in 1707, a war of succession began amongst his three surviving sons, Muazzam – the governor of Kabul, Azam-the governor of Gujarat, and Kam Baksh-the governor of Deccan. Azam turned to Ahmednagar and proclaimed himself emperor. Kam Baksh too declared himself the sovereign ruler and conquered important places as Gulbarga and Hyderabad. Muazzam defeated both Azam at Jajau in 1707 and Kam Baksh near Hyderabad in 1708. Muazzam emerged victorious and ascended the Mughal throne with the title of Bahadur Shah I. He was also known as Shah Alam I. Muazzam 'Bahadur Shah I' (1707-1712 A.D.) Jahandar Shah (1712 – 1713 A.D.) Filming Pakistan in Zero Budget Dr. Ahmad Bilal* ABSTRACT: In 2009-10, I have decided to do the doctorate in the art of filmmaking. Those were the years of extreme decline for Pakistan’s film industry. Pakistani film was almost over and there was no evidence of the resurrection of this destroyed industry. Indeed, the future of film industry was doubtful, and the same could be the case for a film researcher. Most of the friends, after knowing my field of research, often asked me that why would I chose to do PhD in the subject of film. As, according to them, this is one of the obnoxious and intolerable field, as it is ruining the society by offering and promoting sinful and immoral acts. So a PhD in such a field might not be fruitful in this world, as well as hereafter. I started thinking about one of the very basic questions that how this perception about the art of making film was built. The study of traditional Pakistani cinema, ‘established cinema’, has disclosed that the medium of film was facing a control from the very beginning. Indeed, the policy of censorship was rooted in the times of imperialism. The censorship policy of the British rule was executed only to restrain socialist political ideology and nationalistic themes (Pendakur 1996; Shoesmith 2009). The main emphasis of the policy focus of mass media systems during colonial regimes was on furthering administrative efficiency” (McMillin 71). The government of Pakistan had inherited the policies of their colonial masters; hence, they executed similar censorship policies even after Independence.
