• Rehoboam becomes king – 1 Kings 11:43 • Rehoboam dealt harshly with the people – 1 Kings 12:14 • The people ask Jeroboam to be king – 1 Kings 12:20 • 10 northern tribes form “Israel” • Benjamin and Judah remain loyal and become the kingdom of Judah • All Jews were to make 3 pilgrimages every year to the Temple – Deut. 16:16 o Forbade travel to o Mobilized the army o Guarded the border • Introduced the worship of 2 golden calves – 1 Kings 12:28 • Jeroboam welcomed the worship of Baal, Asherah & other Phoenician gods • All subsequent monarchs of Israel followed Jeroboam’s example. • In Judah, it was cyclical, with good kings and bad kings. • Jeroboam caused a division in the kingdom that would never reunite. • Judah was saved because: o They were not seduced into idol worship o They maintained the dynasty of David o They were influenced by the prophets o The Temple in Jerusalem
