2 Kings Chapter 8 Verses 1-6: The Lord brought “famine” to punish Israel’s sin. But in His mercy, He spared the Shunammite woman who had been kind to Elisha (4:8-37). Based on the details given (“went forth to cry … for her house and for her land”), she was probably now a widow. King Jehoram administered justice and kindness, unlike King Ahab in a similar situation (1 Kings 21:1-16). 2 Kings 8:1 "Then spake Elisha unto the woman, whose son he had restored to life, saying, Arise, and go thou and thine household, and sojourn wheresoever thou canst sojourn: for the LORD hath called for a famine; and it shall also come upon the land seven years." “A famine … seven years”: Seven-year famines were known in the ancient Near East (Gen. 41:29-32). Since the Shunammite woman would have been only a resident alien in a foreign land, her return within 7 years may have aided her legal claim to her property (Exodus 21:2; 23:10-11; Lev. 25:1-7; Deut. 15:1-6). This Shunammite woman had befriended Elisha on several occasions. He had prayed, and God had brought her son back to life on one occasion. He knew the 7 year famine that would come upon the land. He went to his friend, and told her to take her family out of the land before the famine begins. The famine in Egypt, at the time of Joseph, had been for 7 years as well. It seems, a severe famine lasts 7 years. -

II Samuel 8:1-18 Lesson #9, David‟s victories and officers The Israelites were surrounded by powerful enemies who had a special hatred of their nation. David, like the Messiah after him must destroy all of his and his people‟s enemies (Lk 20:43). II Samuel 8 tells us of victorious wars against the Philistines, against Moab, against Zobah, against Syria, against Amalek, and against Edom. All these successful conquests are explained in this way: „The Lord gave victory to David wherever he went (II Samuel 8:6,14).1 8:1-14, These verses outline the expansion of David‟s kingdom under the hand of the Lord (v:6,14). Israel‟s major enemies were all defeated as David‟s kingdom extended N, S, E, and W. See I Chronicles 18:1-13. Among the more elusive members of the alliance has been Ba-J-sa miir 1 Ru-bu-bi .KUR A-ma-na-a-a, listed in the Monolith Inscription, column II, line 95. The majority view holds that the toponym A-ma-na-a-a refers to Ammon. the small state located in Transjordan = biblical cammon (Gen. 19:38, etc.). This iden tification ,:>riginated among late 19th and early 20th century scholars,2 is repeated in more recent works,3 and appears in standard translations.4 The ~llinority view was first offered by E. The Prophets Micaiah and Elisha
BIBLE STUDY – “THE PROPHETS – MICAIAH & ELISHA” Page - 1 INTRODUCTION: The prophets Micaiah and Elisha were contemporaries to the prophet Elijah, living in the same time period (856 to 800 BC) and serving in the same area (the Northern Kingdom of Israel). Like Elijah, both spoke against the worship of Baal and against Ahab, the reigning king of Israel. Micaiah actually predicts Ahab’s death, while Elisha succeeds Elijah as a great worker of miracles attesting to the Lord’s presence with Him and validity of the messages he is speaking on behalf of the Lord. Consistent with the Spirit and presence of God witnessed through His Son, Jesus Christ, Elisha will demonstrate many miracles of compassion such as healings and raising people from the dead, and also miracles that defy the laws of nature such as floating an iron ax head on water. These miracles continue to bear witness of God’s compassion and power. MICAIAH: (Foretells death of Ahab) The name Micaiah means “who is like Yahweh?” Micaiah was a prophet, the son of Imlah. Being desired by king Ahab to concur in the favorable prediction given by the prophets of Baal regarding Ahab’s expedition against Ramoth-gilead, he did what was required of him, but with such transparent insincerity that he was adjured to speak the truth, on which, in the named of Yahweh, he predicted the death Ahab in the coming fight. The order was given to make him a prisoner until Ahab’s expected victory should prove his unfavorable pronouncement to be untrue (1 Kings 22:8-28; 2 Chronicles 18:6- 27). -

Examples of Individual and National Restitution in the Books of Kings W Thiel (Ruhr-UniversiHit-Bochum, Germany) (Guest: Dept Old Testament, University of Stellenbosch) ABSTRACT Examples of Individual and National Restitution in the Books of Kings The Books of Kings contain some examples of individual restitution in the prophetic narratives: raising from death, restitution from a disastrous illness and restitution of a social position. The 17win motive in these narratives is the confidence of people in the saving power of the prophet and of God, who uses the nwgic abilities of the prophet. In the composition of the Deuteronomistic History the national restitution of Israel in 2 Kings 13-14 appears as a chance for Israel to repent. But it was not used, and so the history of Israel inevitably came to an end. 1 INTRODUCTION I The books of Kings are a part of the Deuteronomistic History. This work was composed to explain the fall of Israel and Judah, the destruction of the temple, the removal of the Davidic dynasty and the deportation of large parts of the people as a doom of God. In the events of the years 722 and 587 B C, the deuteronomistic redactors recognized the consequences of the wrath of God concerning the guilt of his people. Correspondingly, they shaped their work as a history of the permanent guilt of Israel and Judah opposite to God, as a history of growing disaster. In spite of this general intention the Deuteronomistic History contains several narratives and notes of individual and national restitution. The statements about individual restitution are found in the prophetic traditions, which the redactors adapted. -

Men’s Study & Coffee | March 6, 2018 | 2 Kings, Week Eight (*notes from “Be Distinct” by Warren Wiersbe) 2 Kings 8 & 2 Chronicles 21 | Reaping the Harvest of Sin Eliphaz said some foolish things to his suffering friend Job, but he also stated some eternal principles, one of them being, “Even as I have seen, those who plow iniquity and sow trouble reap the same” (Job 4:8). Solomon repeated this truth in Proverbs 22:8, “He who sows iniquity will reap sorrow”, and the prophet Hosea put it graphically when he said, “They sow the wind, and reap the whirlwind”. Jeroboam, Omri, and Ahab had led the northern kingdom of Israel into idolatry, and Jehoram, who married a daughter of Ahab, had introduced Baal worship into the kingdom of Judah. Both kingdoms were rebellious against the Lord and polluted by idolatry, but now the day of judgment had arrived for Ahab’s dynasty, the day that the Prophet Elijah had predicted (1 Kings 21:21, 29). 1. The greatness of God. (2 Kings 8:1–6) This event likely took place before the healing of Naaman (2 Kings 5), since the king wasn’t likely to welcome a leper into the palace, and Gehazi was a leper (5:27). The author of 2 Kings doesn’t claim to follow a strict chronology, and we’re not even sure which king Gehazi was entertaining with stories about his master. Perhaps this event occurred early in the reign of King Joram. This account reminds us of the greatness of the Lord. -

Now you know that your servant was a fearer of Yahweh, but the creditor came to take two of my children for himself as slaves. • A certain woman – no a Prophet’s wife that is named, just a “certain woman” o If named – well, many could say they were special in so many ways ! Wealthy relatives ! Won the lottery o No, any Minister’s wife, any Prophet’s life-long help-meet. • Loss of her husband o Man of faith in the midst of many pagan idolaters o Spurgeon: “Her husband had been among the persecuted, and having been, by oppression, deprived of all that he had, it came to pass that when he died he left his wife and children in distress: from which I gather, that holy men may be in the worst of circumstances, and yet it will be no proof that the Lord has forsaken them.” • Probable loss of her 2 children o Child slaves who must repay their Mother’s debt through work. • C.H. J.-C., une unique stèle araméenne du VIIIe s. et quatre stèles assyriennes du début et de la fin du VIIIe s. Deux des souverains peuvent être identifiés avec des princes de Hamath nommés dans les inscriptions royales assyriennes, Irhuleni et Zakur, et un autre dans une lettre akkadienne que lui écrivit un roi de Anat sur le moyen Euphrate, Rudamu. Autant de références importantes pour faire le lien entre la chronologie du royaume de Hamath et le système fiable de datation de l’Assyrie. The Period of the Kings Is the Third Stage in Israel's History. It Follows
441 The period of the kings is the third stage in Israel’s history. It follows the period of the Patriarchs (Abraham in the year 1750 B.C.) and that of the Exodus and the Conquest (Moses in the year 1250 B.C.). David captured Jerusalem around the year 1000 B.C. After Solomon’s death in the year 932 B.C., the kingdom of David and his son Solomon would be divided. The northern part, called the kingdom of Israel, would cease to exist as a nation two centuries later. The southern part, called the kingdom of Judah, would last until the year 587 B.C., the year of the destruction of Jerusalem and the temple, and of the Exile to Babylon. This period covers a total of four centuries. These four centuries of the kings are the most important in sacred history because this is the period during which God raised up prophets from among his people. The greater part of Scripture was written during those four centuries. It was not only the major prophets who produced writings, e.g., Isaiah and Jeremiah. There 1-2 K were also groups of prophets of lesser importance who wrote much of Israel’s his- tory, such as the greater part of the pages of Genesis and Exodus, the Books of Deuteronomy, Joshua, Judges, Samuel and Kings. We can say that the period of the kings is the most important period in sacred history. It is also the time which we know with the greatest precision. These four centuries would appear to be the time of the kingdom of Israel’s deca- dence if we paid attention only to its wealth and power. -

End of an Empire In the last decade or so of his reign, Solomon’s regime was beset with problems at home and abroad. On the south, prince Hadad of Edom returned from Egyptian exile to reclaim the independence of Edom (1 Kings 11:14-22). This must have endangered Solomon’s hold on the Arabah rift valley (south from the Dead Sea) with its access to copper-deposits, and to Ezion-Geber and the Red Sea. His sources of wealth from the south, therefore, were probably curtailed. In the north, a certain Rezon gained control of Damascus and the former kingdom of Aram-Zobah (1 Kings 11:23-25). With this revolt, Solomon’s northern foreign holdings fell away completely. An independent Aram cut him off both from Hamath (now also left independent) and from the routes to the Euphrates; northern trade would suffer. Nearer home, one Jeroboam son of Nebat was heralded by a prophet as future ruler of the northern tribes of Israel as distinct from Judah and Benjamin. Solomon’s attempts to eliminate him were frustrated by Jeroboam’s flight into Egypt, he finding safe haven at the court of the new pharaoh Shishak (1 Kings 11:26-40), i.e. Shoshenq I, founder of the new, Libyan, Twenty-second Dynasty. Stripped of supporting revenues from both north and south, taxation now bore heavily upon the Hebrew people [p.109] themselves―and perhaps more upon Israel than on Judah (possibly favoured by the royal house).
