Class of 2022 PGY II – Current 2nd Years I was born and raised in the Bay Area and went to Vassar College, where I majored in political science and drama. After studying public health abroad, I began to see clearly how medicine could be used as a vehicle for social justice. I went on to complete a postbac in Baltimore and then worked with the Transitions Clinic Network to care for patients who had recently been released from prison. At UC Irvine School of Medicine, I was involved in leadership of a syringe exchange and starting projects in the local jail system. I chose to go into family medicine because it will best allow me to help patients and communities combat and prevent illness. When the time comes to lobby for policies Birnbaum, Nathan Jacob that positively impact society’s health, being a family University of California Irvine, physician will best equip me to advocate for my patients. School of Medicine My interests include addiction, reentry medicine, reproductive justice, and health policy. I chose UNM for its broad scope of training, commitment to community health, leadership in addiction, and its role as academic safety-net system. I am incredibly excited to move to Albuquerque with my co-FM resident and wife Orli! Born and raised in Albuquerque, I have grown up grateful for sunshine and the beauty of blending cultures, languages, and people from different walks of life. I attended the College of William and Mary in Virginia for college. Afterwards, I returned to Albuquerque where I eventually was fortunate to attend medical school at UNM. -

For example, if you are a young person you may be trying to decide whether you ought to go to college or, perhaps, join the military, or take a year off and travel, or do ministry. If you choose college, which college should you go to? Should you start off in a community college; should you pursue a four year degree? And where will that be? How much debt should you take on? When you go to college, what should your major be? Some of you already have Bachelor’s degrees and are thinking about enrolling in a Master’s program, or pursuing your doctorate. Or many of you are applying for jobs, or thinking about leaving your current employment because you are unhappy. Some of you may be deciding whether or not to purchase a home, or to build a home. Should you get married? Who should you marry? Should you have a child? Should you have another child? Maybe you’re in a situation where there are medical risks if you have a child. Should you try anyway? For some of you, your life-changing decision may be about bringing a foster child into your home. Or choosing to adopt a child. And certainly it is not just young adults who are facing major decisions that may significantly impact the course of our lives. -

The Protestant Reformation was just beginning in Scotland and the leader of the Reformation there was named John Knox, who was violently anti-Roman Catholic. When John Knox was a young man, he was taken prisoner and forced to row in a French galley ship for almost 2 years. Here is an incident from John Knox’s journal. He writes: Soon after the arrival of the ship [in France] a glorious painted image of Mary was brought in to be kissed and was presented to one of the Scottish men [me] then chained. I gently said, “Trouble me not; such an idol is a curse; and therefore I will not touch it.” The soldiers with two officers, having the chief charge of all such matters said, “You shall handle it” and they violently thrust it in my face and between my hands; who seeing the emergency, took the idol, and advisedly looking about I cast it in the river and said, “Let our Lady now save herself: she is light enough; let her learn to swim!” For much of the last 2000 years the Christian church has swung wildly from one extreme to the other concerning how we are to regard Mary, the Mother of Jesus. On the one hand, we have what some people would call “Mariolatry” – a devotion to Mary bordering on idolatry. -

The Prophets Micaiah and Elisha
BIBLE STUDY – “THE PROPHETS – MICAIAH & ELISHA” Page - 1 INTRODUCTION: The prophets Micaiah and Elisha were contemporaries to the prophet Elijah, living in the same time period (856 to 800 BC) and serving in the same area (the Northern Kingdom of Israel). Like Elijah, both spoke against the worship of Baal and against Ahab, the reigning king of Israel. Micaiah actually predicts Ahab’s death, while Elisha succeeds Elijah as a great worker of miracles attesting to the Lord’s presence with Him and validity of the messages he is speaking on behalf of the Lord. Consistent with the Spirit and presence of God witnessed through His Son, Jesus Christ, Elisha will demonstrate many miracles of compassion such as healings and raising people from the dead, and also miracles that defy the laws of nature such as floating an iron ax head on water. These miracles continue to bear witness of God’s compassion and power. MICAIAH: (Foretells death of Ahab) The name Micaiah means “who is like Yahweh?” Micaiah was a prophet, the son of Imlah. Being desired by king Ahab to concur in the favorable prediction given by the prophets of Baal regarding Ahab’s expedition against Ramoth-gilead, he did what was required of him, but with such transparent insincerity that he was adjured to speak the truth, on which, in the named of Yahweh, he predicted the death Ahab in the coming fight. The order was given to make him a prisoner until Ahab’s expected victory should prove his unfavorable pronouncement to be untrue (1 Kings 22:8-28; 2 Chronicles 18:6- 27). -

Examples of Individual and National Restitution in the Books of Kings W Thiel (Ruhr-UniversiHit-Bochum, Germany) (Guest: Dept Old Testament, University of Stellenbosch) ABSTRACT Examples of Individual and National Restitution in the Books of Kings The Books of Kings contain some examples of individual restitution in the prophetic narratives: raising from death, restitution from a disastrous illness and restitution of a social position. The 17win motive in these narratives is the confidence of people in the saving power of the prophet and of God, who uses the nwgic abilities of the prophet. In the composition of the Deuteronomistic History the national restitution of Israel in 2 Kings 13-14 appears as a chance for Israel to repent. But it was not used, and so the history of Israel inevitably came to an end. 1 INTRODUCTION I The books of Kings are a part of the Deuteronomistic History. This work was composed to explain the fall of Israel and Judah, the destruction of the temple, the removal of the Davidic dynasty and the deportation of large parts of the people as a doom of God. In the events of the years 722 and 587 B C, the deuteronomistic redactors recognized the consequences of the wrath of God concerning the guilt of his people. Correspondingly, they shaped their work as a history of the permanent guilt of Israel and Judah opposite to God, as a history of growing disaster. In spite of this general intention the Deuteronomistic History contains several narratives and notes of individual and national restitution. The statements about individual restitution are found in the prophetic traditions, which the redactors adapted. -

The Elijah and Elisha Narrative Against its Ancient Near Eastern Background SHAUL BAR (UNIVERSITY OF MEMPHIS) ABSTRACT The Elijah and Elisha cycles have similar stories where the prophet brings a dead child back to life. In addition, in the Elisha story, a corpse is thrown into the prophet’s grave; when it comes into con- tact with one of his bones, the man returns to life. Thus the question is do these stories allude to resurrection, or “only” miraculous cures? What was the purpose of the inclusion of these stories and what message did they convey? In this paper we will show that these are legends that were intended to lend greater credence to prophetic activity and to indicate the Lord’s power over death. A INTRODUCTION There is consensus among scholars that Dan 12:2-3, which they assign to the 1 second century B.C.E., refers to the resurrection of the dead. The question be- comes whether biblical texts earlier than this era allude to this doctrine. The phrase “resurrection of the dead” never appears in the Bible. Scholars searching for biblical allusions to resurrection have cited various idioms.2 They list verbs including “arise,”3 “wake up,”4 and “live,”5 all of which can denote a return to life. We also find “take,”6 which refers to being taken to Heaven, the noun “life,”7 and “see.”8 In the present paper however, we shall examine the stories of the Elijah and Elisha cycles which include similar tales in which the prophet brings a dead child back to life: in Elijah’s case, the son of the widow of Zare- phath (1 Kgs 17:17-24); in Elisha’s, the son of the Shunammite matron (2 Kgs 4:31-37). -

1 Hezekiah’s Prayer 2 Kings 18-19 Characters: Narrator, Sennacherib, Isaiah, Hezekiah, Messenger Narrator: God’s land had been split into two kingdoms—Israel and Judah. Israel had been ruled by very unfaithful kings, and none of the Israelites had believed in God anymore. Judah had once been ruled by Ahaz, who was a very sinful king, and had built false altars around the kingdom. When his son Hezekiah became king, Hezekiah ruled that all the false idols be burned. Hezekiah: I decree that all the false idols be burned! Also, I order that the bronze serpent Moses built be destroyed, as the people have started worshipping it as a god. The people will only worship the one true God, the Lord! Narrator: God found favor with Hezekiah for destroying all of the idols in the land. Sometime during Hezekiah’s reign, the Assyrians came and conquered the land of Israel. God allowed Israel to be conquered because they had stopped worshipping Him. Soon, the Assyrians began to attack cities in Judah. Sennacherib, the King of Assyria, sent a messenger to Hezekiah telling him to surrender. Messenger: Sennacherib has ordered me to give you this message. He orders you to surrender, and pay tribute to him, and he will not destroy Judah. He demands 11 tons of silver and 1 ton of gold. If you do not pay his demands, he will destroy you and all of your people. Hezekiah: What choice do I have? I will pay his tribute. Get all of the gold and silver in the kingdom.
