ISSUE: 2019 No. 35 ISSN 2335-6677 RESEARCHERS AT ISEAS – YUSOF ISHAK INSTITUTE ANALYSE CURRENT EVENTS Singapore | 30 April 2019 Islamic Universities and Their Impact on Singapore Graduates Norshahril Saat and Fauzan Arif Roslee* EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Typically, Singaporean students reading Islamic studies choose to study at one of the universities in the Middle East. The Al-Azhar University (in Egypt), the Islamic University of Madinah (in Saudi Arabia), and universities in Jordan are among the more popular choices. The formation of Islamic universities in Malaysia since the 1980s has given these students alternatives. The International Islamic University of Malaysia (IIUM), is the second most popular destination for madrasah students after Al-Azhar. This Perspective examines the pros and cons of studying in these universities. It hopes to inform the planning for the Singapore Islamic College (SIC), if it is even necessary to have one in the first place. Concerns regarding Islamic education should go beyond the fields of security and terrorism and the threat of “Arabisation”. Rather, the primary focus should be how Islamic education can facilitate graduates’ immersion into Singapore’s secular and multi-racial setting. * Norshahril Saat is Fellow at ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute. Glossary of Islam 1 Glossary of Islam This article is part of a series on: Islam Islam portal The following list consists of notable concepts that are derived from both Islamic and Arab tradition, which are expressed as words in the Arabic language. The main purpose of this list is to disambiguate multiple spellings, to make note of spellings no longer in use for these concepts, to define the concept in one or two lines, to make it easy for one to find and pin down specific concepts, and to provide a guide to unique concepts of Islam all in one place. Separating concepts in Islam from concepts specific to Arab culture, or from the language itself, can be difficult. Many Arabic concepts have an Arabic secular meaning as well as an Islamic meaning. One example is the concept of dawah. Arabic, like all languages, contains words whose meanings differ across various contexts. The word Islam is itself a good example. Arabic is written in its own alphabet, with letters, symbols, and orthographic conventions that do not have exact equivalents in the Latin alphabet (see Arabic alphabet). The following list contains transliterations of Arabic terms and phrases; variations exist, e.g. din instead of deen and aqidah instead of aqeedah. Educational activities carried out in al-Masjid an- Nabawi can be handled basically in three separate groups: The Institute of al-Masjid an-Nabawi, lectures delivered by scholars, and course circles. On the other hand, this study was limited to the study of course circles. Thousands of students participate in this educational activity which is carried out in two main groups, namely Quranic and scientific circles. 112,243 students from 102 countries participated in the Quranic circles, which aimed to read and memorize the Quran correctly between 1-29 April 2014. This corresponds to an average of 5,353 participants per day. Between 15-27 May 2014, a total of 8,750 students participated in the science circles based on the memorization of classical texts. -

Communicating History: The Mnemonic Battles of the 2011 Arab Uprisings Abstract This dissertation explores how history has been communicated during the 2011 Arab uprisings and their aftermath (2011-2015). It is a study about the struggle for finding a historically-grounded revolutionary narrative for an assumed Arab body politic that is torn apart by multiple political forces. I analyze popular communicative practices that invoke history and argue that they have played a crucial role in propagating a narrative that portrayed the uprisings as a collective Arab revolution and awakening. The strategic claim that protestors were making history, I suggest, paved the way for expressing hopes about the future through invoking past history. From 2011 to 2015 in the Arab world, contentious debates about politics were often expressed through a language and a symbolism about history. These controversies were projected towards specific symbols and tropes, which evoked condensed cultural meanings, and which became subsequently used to communicate political aspirations and to assert power in the present and onto the future. -
