Ken Chitwood1 Published online: 15 September 2020 # The Author(s) 2020 Introduction Brenda Flanagan’s 2009 novel Allah in the Islands tells the story of the lives, dreams, and social tensions of the residents of Rosehill, a community on the fictional “Santabella Island.” The novel centers around the protagonist Beatrice Salandy and her decision whether or not to leave Santabella, a lush and tropical Caribbean island only thinly veiled as real-life Trinidad. Weaving its way through the novel is Beatrice’s relationship with an “Afro-Santabellan” Muslim community that is critical of island politics and outspoken on behalf of the poor. Through first-hand narratives from Abdul—one of the members of the community and right-hand man to its leader, Haji—readers learn that the “Afro-Santabellan” Muslim community is planning a coup against the Santabellan government. This, in turn, is a thinly veiled reference to the real-life 1990 Jamaat al-Muslimeen coup. A key theme that runs throughout the book, and in contemporary Trinidad, is how the non-Muslim residents of Santabella view “Afro-Santabellan” Muslims. Situated between the island’s Black and Indian commu- nities, Flanagan writes how island residents react with a mixture of awe and opprobri- um to their Muslim neighbors. While it may seem strange to start a review of one book with a discussion of another, I would not have been aware of Flanagan’s work if it were not for Aliyah Khan. -

Campus Prophets, Spiritual Guides, or Interfaith Traffic Directors? The Many Lives of College and University Chaplains The Luce Lectures on the Changing Role of Chaplains in American Higher Education Based on a Lecture Delivered on November 13, 2018 John Schmalzbauer Department of Religious Studies Missouri State University 901 South National Avenue Springfield, MO 65897 Email: [email protected] What roles do chaplains play in contemporary American higher education? Drawing on the National Study of Campus Ministries (2002-2008), this paper contrasts the post-war chaplaincy with its twenty-first century successor. While a relatively young occupation, the job of the college chaplain has shifted greatly over the past sixty years. Vastly different from the 1950s, the demographic profile of college chaplains has also changed, reflecting the growing presence of women clergy and the diversification of the American campus. Accompanying these shifts, changes in American religion have transformed the context of the profession. Though some things have remained the same (chaplains still preach, counsel, and preside over religious services), other things are very different. On the twenty-first century campus, chaplains have increasingly found themselves occupying the roles of campus prophets, spiritual guides, and interfaith traffic directors, a combination that did not exist in the mid-century chaplaincy.1 In chronicling these changes, it is helpful to compare accounts of post-war chaplaincy with the twenty-first century profession. Historian Warren Goldstein’s work on Yale University chaplain William Sloane Coffin, Jr. looms large in this comparison. For a whole generation of mainline Protestants, Coffin modeled an approach to chaplaincy that emphasized the public, prophetic components of the role, accompanying the Freedom Riders and protesting the Vietnam War. -

Day after day, media coverage focused on the proposal to create a center for Muslim and interfaith worship and recreational activities in Lower Manhattan. The space envisioned for Park51 was a vacant department store which was damaged on September 11, 2001. Eventually, it was sold to Sharif El-Gamal, a Manhattan realtor and developer, in July of 2009. El-Gamal intended to use this space to build a community center open to the general public, which would feature a performing arts center, swimming pool, fitness center, basketball court, an auditorium, a childcare center, and many other amenities along with a Muslim prayer space/mosque. Despite the approval for construction by a Manhattan community board, the site became a battleground and the project was hotly debated. It has been over ten years since the uproar over Park51, and it is important to revisit the event as it has continued significance and impact today. The main argument against the construction of the community center and mosque was its proximity to Ground Zero. Opponents to Park51 argued that the construction of a mosque so close to Ground Zero was offensive and insensitive because the 9/11 attackers were associated with Islam (see fig. -

Esposito, Ph.D. ABSTRACT Muslims in America must move beyond theological discourse and polemics to creating a dynamic apparatus that can promote indigenous and organic Muslim American culture and that accommodates ideological and cultural diversity. Muslims needs to move beyond attempting solely to correct their image and dispel stereotypes. While these are admirable goals, they cannot be the end goal for engaging in the creative arts, because such a narrowly defined, negative vision does not allow for an organic expression of the self. It is imperative that Muslims establish an artistic tradition in America, because to be an American Muslim is a creative process in itself. Laying the foundation for an expressive culture will ensure that Muslims celebrate their humanity and affirm their dignity, and they will then be free from having to define themselves in opposition to something else. The Social Involvement of Women in Islam By Imam Zaid Shakir www.zaytuna.org One of the persistent attacks against Islam is that it is a religion which stifles the social involvement of women. By social involvement, we mean involvement in those spheres of endeavor which occur outside of the home and impact on the general nature and direction of society. Islam, it is said, desires to divest women of any meaningful social role, to keep them “trapped” in the confines of their homes, under the constant surveillance and control of men. This claim, as we will endeavor to show, does not accurately reflect the fullness of Islamic teachings on this issue. While Islam does advocate a social scheme which places great emphasis on the domestic role of women, it also creates ample space for their meaningful participation in public affairs. The purpose of this article is to examine aspects of that social involvement based on the Qur’an and the prophetic tradition. That examination will be preceded by a brief expose on the fundamental equality of men and women in Islam. The Fundamental Equality of Men and Women in Islam The Qur’an emphasizes that men and women are equal in their physical and metaphysical composition. We read in that regard, “We have surely ennobled the descendants of Adam.” [1] This ennoblement of the human being precludes any claims to gender superiority, or any feelings of inferiority based on physical, or metaphysical composition. Such feelings underlie schemes of gender-based oppression, and have no place in Islam. We also read in the Qur’an, “We have surely created the human in the best of molds.” [2] Again, this process of human creation is not gender specific. -

Sultan Muhammad is being interviewed by Mona Askar of the Chicago History Museum’s Studs Terkel Center for Oral History. Could you please state and spell your first and last name? Sultan Muhammad: My name is Sultan Muhammad. S-u-l-t-a-n Last name, Muhammad M-u-h-a-m-m-a-d Int: When and where were you born? SM: I was born here in Chicago in 1973. In the month of January 28th. Int: Could you please tell us about your parents, what they do for a living. Do you have any siblings? SM: My father, may blessings be on him, passed in 1990. He was also born here in Chicago. He is a grandson of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad. He grew up in the Nation of Islam, working for his father, Jabir Herbert Muhammad who was the fight manager for Muhammad Ali and business manager of the Nation of Islam. Sultan Muhammad, my father, was also a pilot. He was the youngest black pilot in America at the time. Later he became an imam under Imam Warith Deen Mohammed after 1975. My mother, Jamima was born in Detroit. She is the daughter of Dorothy Rashana Hussain and Mustafa Hussain. Robert was his name before accepting Islam. -

ISSUE: 2019 No. 35 ISSN 2335-6677 RESEARCHERS AT ISEAS – YUSOF ISHAK INSTITUTE ANALYSE CURRENT EVENTS Singapore | 30 April 2019 Islamic Universities and Their Impact on Singapore Graduates Norshahril Saat and Fauzan Arif Roslee* EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Typically, Singaporean students reading Islamic studies choose to study at one of the universities in the Middle East. The Al-Azhar University (in Egypt), the Islamic University of Madinah (in Saudi Arabia), and universities in Jordan are among the more popular choices. The formation of Islamic universities in Malaysia since the 1980s has given these students alternatives. The International Islamic University of Malaysia (IIUM), is the second most popular destination for madrasah students after Al-Azhar. This Perspective examines the pros and cons of studying in these universities. It hopes to inform the planning for the Singapore Islamic College (SIC), if it is even necessary to have one in the first place. Concerns regarding Islamic education should go beyond the fields of security and terrorism and the threat of “Arabisation”. Rather, the primary focus should be how Islamic education can facilitate graduates’ immersion into Singapore’s secular and multi-racial setting. * Norshahril Saat is Fellow at ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute. This workshop answers such questions by outlining Zaytuna’s history as a college, its educational philosophy, and vision for its graduates. The workshop will inform educators of the kind of education that is ideal for students wishing to enter the college. Omar Qureshi is Dean of Faculty and professor of Islamic law and theology at Zaytuna College, which he joined in August 2017. After obtaining his bachelors of arts in microbiology, he went on to complete his M.Ed. in curriculum and instruction – science education both from the University of Missouri – Columbia. Prior to Zaytuna College, for seven years Omar served as the principal for a parochial school located in Chicago’s west suburbs.
