Calloway was a master of energetic scat singing and led one of the United States' most popular big bands from the start of the 1930s through to the late 1940s. Calloway's band featured performers including trumpeters Dizzy Gillespie and Adolphus "Doc" Cheatham, saxophonists Ben Webster and Leon "Chu" Berry, New Orleans guitar ace Danny Barker, and bassist Milt Hinton. Calloway continued to perform until his death in 1994 at the age of 86. Biography Early years Calloway was born in Rochester, New York, on Christmas Day in 1907. The family relocated to Baltimore, Maryland. His mother, Martha Eulalia Reed, was a Morgan State College graduate, teacher and church organist. His father, Cabell Calloway, Jr., was a graduate of Lincoln University of Pennsylvania in 1898 and worked as a lawyer and in real estate. Cab Calloway spent his adolescent years growing up in West Baltimore's Sugar Hill, considered the political, cultural, and business hub of black society. There he grew up comfortably in a middle-class household. Early on, his parents recognized their son's musical talent and he began private voice lessons in 1922.

    The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture The New York Public Library Malcolm X: A Search for Truth May 19, 2005 – December 31, 2005 Introduction The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, The New York Public Library, is pleased to present Malcolm X: A Search for Truth, an exhibition in commemoration of the eightieth anniversary of the birth of Malcolm X/El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz. The exhibition is based in part on the collection of personal and professional papers and memorabilia of Malcolm X that was rescued from auction in 2002 and placed on deposit at the Schomburg Center by the Shabazz family. This exhibition provides the first opportunity for the public to view significant aspects of this collection. Complemented by an epilogue focusing on courtroom evidence from the New York City Municipal Archives and courtroom images by Tracy Sugarman in the Schomburg Center’s Art and Artifacts Division, Malcolm X: A Search for Truth uses the materials from this extraordinary collection as well as other collections from the Center. These never-before-exhibited materials present a provocative and informative perspective on the life of the person known variously as Malcolm Little, “Detroit Red,” Malcolm X, and El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz. More significantly, the exhibition poses questions about the nature of the developmental journey that Malcolm Little pursued to become El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz. The subtitle A Search for Truth focuses the interpretive dimensions of the exhibition on the process and products of his driving intellectual quest for truth about himself, his family, his people, his country, and his world.

Study Guide 1 Introduction Introduction James Baldwin's collection of essays, Notes of a Native Son, with the individual essays having been originally written during the 1940s and 1950s, gives readers a thoughtful commentary on the social environment in the United States in the era of the Civil Rights Movement. Through the eyes and mind of one of America's most effective essayists, the conditions of being an African American living in a society that is grappling with the consequences of racial discrimination are witnessed firsthand. The subjects of his essays vary as Baldwin ponders his own reactions to the significance of the so-called protest novel to the circumstances that led many African-American writers of his time to become expatriates. According to Baldwin's biographer, David Leeming, the idea for Baldwin's collection came from an old school friend, Sol Stein, who had become an editor at Beacon Press. Baldwin's first response to the suggestion of publishing his essays, which were largely autobiographical, was that he was "too young" to publish his "memoirs." Baldwin had, after all, only published one other book prior to Notes, and on top of this he was only thirty years old, which meant that he was in his twenties when he wrote the essays. Despite his lack of a long professional career, however, Baldwin would be surprised at the reaction he would receive upon publication.

    THE QUEST FOR BLACK POWER: ALUTA CONTINUIA Compiled and Edited by Marc Imhotep Cray, M.D. (aka RBG Street Scholar) Essays on the History of Black Nationalism / Pan-Afrikanism Preface It is quite clear that Afrikan people in America continue to be miseducated. This problem is discussed in a variety of ways in conversations every day in our communities throughout America. The time is ripe to heed the long-standing, and most often overlooked, calls for Afrikan Unity, Cultural Development, Education and Social Transformation. Such is what this book most fundamentally represents. Contrary to the prevailing, misinformed assumptions, RBG (Black Nationalism / Pan- Afrikanism) as an ideology, interaction and academic process is not a rabid assertion of Black supremacy. Unlike white Nationalism and American patriotism, RBG (Black Nationalism / Pan-Afrikanism) and its proponents do not seek to humiliate, exploit, or oppress any person or people. Rather, RBG / (Black Nationalism / Pan-Afrikanism) is a positive affirmation of the cultural, political, social, economic and moral identity and concerns of African people. In its most rudimentary forms, it reacts to the brutally violent and repressive conditions under which African people have and continue to live. White supremacy / racism create an environment where whites are necessarily viewed with suspicion, but we are not anti- white. We are Afrikan/ Black on purpose and Black folks must first and foremost be beholden to each other. The most basic expression of RBG (Black Nationalism/ Pan-Afrikanism ) thought is that Black / Afrikan people in America and throughout the diaspora are bound by the common history and experience of historical chattel and present day mental slavery, suffering and death under the boot heel of white supremacy / racism.

    Unincorporated Greenburgh Comprehensive Plan CHAPTER 2.0 Our Town of Greenburgh 2.1 Historic Overview of the Town Greenburgh's recorded history* began more than 400 years ago when Henry Hudson traveled up the river that now bears his name. During these travels, he encountered the Weckquasgeek Indians who occupied the area now known as the Town of Greenburgh. The Weckquasgeek Indians were known for using the bark of native trees to fashion canoes, lodge coverings and unique water-tight kettles. “Weckquasgeek” is said to mean "the place of the bark kettle." In 1955, the Town of Greenburgh adopted The official Seal of the a bark kettle as a symbol for its official seal as a historic reminder of the first settlers of Town of Greenburgh the area. Following Hudson's 1609 voyage, the Dutch claimed sovereignty and started to settle the area. Land was purchased from the Indians and small colonies were established. In 1664, when the Dutch surrendered sovereignty to Great Britain, the English began to develop boundaries of existing towns and provide basic organization of town government. Frederick Philipse, who had emigrated from Holland, swore loyalty to the British king and began acquiring large tracts of land. In 1693, the Philipse family received a charter from the English crown establishing the Manor of Philipsburg, * Historical approximately 200 square miles. The Manor’s western border was the Hudson River information obtained providing a route for shipping its goods.     Greenburgh’s Hall of Heroes: Ferncliff Cemetery Where Memories Live Forever By: Riley Wentzler & Felicia Barber Shakespeare had it wrong, the question is not “to be or not to be,” death is inevitable and so at some point we shall all cease to be. The question is “How will I be remembered after I die?” Every culture from The Aztecs, to The Ancient Greeks to the Vikings to the Muslims, the Jews and the Christians has answered this question in a remarkably similar way. The consistent answer has been that those who have lived a virtuous life shall enter a Hall of Heroes. This is the place the Aztecs called “The Land of our Ancestors”, what the Greeks called “Elysium”, what the Vikings called “Valhalla,” the Jews refer to if only briefly as “Green Pastures” The Christians call “Heaven” and The Muslims call “Paradise.” Whatever name this hall of heroes is given it is certain that once a person has earned their place there, their memory shall live forever. For residents of Greenburgh, this Hall of Heroes is Ferncliff Cemetery located on 280 Secor Road Hartsdale, NY 10530 which fittingly for a hall of heroes even bears the slogan “Where Memories Live Forever.” As a non-sectarian cemetery people from all cultural traditions can be buried there. Ferncliff Cemetery was established on February 26, 1902 (http://ferncliffcemetery.com/about/). It contains three Mausolea: Ferncliff Mausoleum built in 1927, the Shrine of Memories built in 1956, and Rosewood Mausoleum built in 1999 (http://ferncliffcemetery.com/mausolea-grounds/). According to Ferncliff staff, there are approximately 148,000 people buried in the cemetery.
