BLIS V-Viii Title.P65 PREFACE In the curricular structure introduced by this University for students of various degree programme, the opportunity to pursue Second Degree Programme in a Subject as introduced by this University is equally available to all learners. Instead of being guided by any presumption about ability level, it would perhaps stand to reason if receptivity of a learner is judged in the course of the learning process. That would be entirely in keeping with the objectives of open education which does not believe in artificial differentiation. Keeping this in view, study materials of the Second Degree Programme in different subjects are being prepared on the basis of a well laid-out syllabus. The course structure combines the best elements in the approved syllabi of Central and State Universities in respective subjects. It has been so designed as to be upgradable with the addition of new information as well as results of fresh thinking and analysis. The accepted methodology of distance education has been followed in the preparation of these study materials. Co-operation in every form of experienced scholars is indispensable for a work of this kind. We, therefore, owe an enormous debt of gratitude to everyone whose tireless efforts went into the writing, editing and devising of proper lay-out of the meterials. Practically speaking, their role amounts to an involvement in invisible teaching. For, whoever makes use of these study materials would virtually derive the benefit of learning under their collective care without each being seen by the other. The more a learner would seriously pursue these study materials the easier it will be for him or her to reach out to larger horizons of a subject. Care has also been taken to make the language lucid and presentation attractive so that they may be rated as quality self-learning materials. If anything remains still obscure or difficult to follow, arrangements are there to come to terms with them through the counselling sessions regularly available at the network of study centres set up by the University. Needless to add, a great part of these efforts is still experimental—in fact, pioneering in certain areas. Naturally, there is every possibility of some lapse or deficiency here and there. However, these do admit of rectification and further improvement in due course. On the whole, therefore, these study materials are expected to evoke wider appreciation the more they receive serious attention of all concerned. Enquirers bring questions and librarian replies. But in reality it is not that easy. Questions enquirers ask mostly not clear, it is like the nebula. Reference librarian makes it bright like star through conversations. Then he replies with the help of his tools, available in his library. This bipartite exchange of opinion in brief is actually Reference Service. From our childhood we learn to ask what, why, where? Our parents according to their capacity reply. This element of exchange of opinion is same in respect of Reference Service. Whether a child well sheltered in his mother's lap or Havana cigar smoker computer scientist puts toward questions is same primarily for librarians. In the beginning a person should be there to raise question. Secondly, there should be a query. Thirdly, presence of a person whom the question could be addressed and finally there should be some materials for the person, who could reply. J. H. Shera defined Library as agency of communication. But the question is what is this communication? How to perform this communication? Apparently it appears to be very easy but in actual practice it is not that simple, already stated. At the very outset there is a problem of how the reader would express the question? The duty of the reference librarian in this case would be to make it befitting to the information sources available. Then he has to organise the search method, to determine the source, etc. Five Laws of Ranganathan fully and finally help to form the nucleus of 3 reference service. D. J. Foskett had ascribed reference service as the best job in the library. In today's world right to information and news are not confined to intellectuals only, it is extended to all categories of persons. Formerly Library was absolutely under the control of few hands, situation had changed to open it for the masses. Earlier days library was seen as nonalternative for general public, now time compelled to expand its horizon for the same public to attract them into the knowledge sphere of library. It is now a very huge job, where pivotal role is played by the libraries. Librarian's role is increased to build the communication bridge between readers and source materials deposited in the library. This additional job is chiefly known as process of information work and better known as reference service. Was there ever a time, when one person used to grasp the whole universe of knowledge? If at all this could be there it is lost in the womb of past. In ancient civilization, although it might be true, it became a far-off possibility in middle age. Yet during renaissance exceptional persons like Leonardo da vinchi's ability had astonished the world. In this beginning of Christian era, for few centuries it was found few people were having encyclopaedic knowledge, but after 18th century, slowly, this trend became unnoticeable. Thereafter role of information processors had accelerated to help the researchers and scholars.

    In and out of history: 12. how a Goan scholar in Bombay imagined a colonial Indian past and a future independent India (1870-1900) Filipa Lowndes Vicente 264 ambiguous inclusions: inside out, outside in introduction In his book on Portuguese men that achieved some prominence abroad, published in 1879, Bernardes Branco confessed that he had not been sure if Gerson da Cunha was Portuguese or English, and that he had had to contact Cunha Rivara, the Portuguese secretary of the Governor in Goa and a scholar, to resolve his doubts: “Mr. Gerson da Cunha is a Portuguese subject, born in Goa, of indigenous race and of the Brahman caste. He is established in Bombay as a doctor” was Cunha Rivara’s answer.1 In fact, Gerson da Cunha studied medicine in Bombay, Edinburgh and London, before returning to Bombay in the 1870s and making medicine his profession. However, his historical, archaeological and numismatic interests, mainly in themes related to the Portuguese in India, increasingly occupied a large part of his time and resulted in numerous articles and books published in the last three decades of the 19th century. José Gerson da Cunha’s biography and bibliography, his personal itinerary as well as his scholarly written production, will enable me to explore the idea of inclusion, and of exclusion, in three different yet interconnected ways. The first is through his actualbiographical itinerary. Living across different borders and spaces meant that foreignness and displacement were central words in the narrative of his life. I shall explore how da Cunha strove to be included in certain scholarly national spheres, such as the Italian; while apparently consciously excluding himself from Portugal, where his status would always be that of a Portuguese “other” and, therefore, subaltern in relation to mainstream scholarly local elites.

    1 Rassophore Monk Angelos Holy Trinity Orthodox Seminary Perpetual Embers: A Chronicle of ROCOR’s Missionary Efforts in India Introduction The Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia,1 although founded as the church of the post-revolutionary Russian diaspora, also served as the custodian and guardian of the scattered pre-revolutionary Russian Orthodox missions in various parts of the world. From these, some quarters of ROCOR inherited and maintained a missionary spirit that has resulted in Orthodoxy flourishing in places where there had previously been no preaching of Christ’s saving message. Some of these missions have continued to blaze like a fire amidst the growing darkness of our secular age while others have remained ‘perpetual embers,’ steadily glowing through the toils of dedicated missionaries yet never reaching their full potential; God’s will for their full fruition seemingly delayed until He deems it meet. One such mission field is India: the great subcontinent, birthplace of two of the world’s most significant religions, Hinduism and Buddhism, home to one of its largest Muslim populations, and native land to one of the most ancient eastern Christian communities – the Saint Thomas Christians of Kerala.2 ROCOR has been present in India, to some extent, throughout most of ROCOR’s history, particularly in the years immediately before and after the Second World War. A number of ROCOR luminaries – including some who later became bishops and first hierarchs– were involved in the small Indian mission at one time or another, but few, with certain very notable exceptions, made India their home for any considerable period of time.

Many independent and appended Glossaries of Indian terms had also been published before George Clifford Whitworth’s An Anglo- Indian Dictionary (1885) as a prelude to this literature. Later, even Indians’ contributions in English were brought under this class. Scrutiny of several English and Indian historians’ take on this literature-type reveals that Anglo-Indian Literature has been changing its contours quite frequently. What is amazing is that even the names of this literature have been changing with time and the new avatars keep on taking place by embracing new genres / literatures / litterateurs. The term Anglo- Indian is used both as an adjective and a noun. It is heavily loaded as it points towards paternal lineage, colour, religion, culture, mind and the location of the author that distinguishes one from other British nationals. It was introduced as the official description of the Eurasian communities for the first time in 1882. Viceroy Charles Hardinge, in 1911, sanctioned the use of the term Anglo-Indian in the official census. An insight into the community’s history will certainly be helpful in understanding the cultural concerns of the community and issues in their literature. Confusion among the editors, literary historians and academic scholarship is no less responsible for the changing names and adopting the new ones for this hybrid literature.
