Regular review and re-designing of the courses with innovative ideas are taken up by the faculty. Besides the teaching and research programmes, the schools have been engaging methods and ways to stimulate research further and enhance the learning skills of the students by organizing research seminars and national seminar cum technical festival for students from across India.

    HINDUISM IN EUROPE Stockholm 26-28 April, 2017 Abstracts 1. Vishwa Adluri, Hunter College, USA Sanskrit Studies in Germany, 1800–2015 German scholars came late to Sanskrit, but within a quarter century created an impressive array of faculties. European colleagues acknowledged Germany as the center of Sanskrit studies on the continent. This chapter examines the reasons for this buildup: Prussian university reform, German philological advances, imagined affinities with ancient Indian and, especially, Aryan culture, and a new humanistic model focused on method, objectivity, and criticism. The chapter’s first section discusses the emergence of German Sanskrit studies. It also discusses the pantheism controversy between F. W. Schlegel and G. W. F. Hegel, which crucially influenced the German reception of Indian philosophy. The second section traces the German reception of the Bhagavad Gītā as a paradigmatic example of German interpretive concerns and reconstructive methods. The third section examines historic conflicts and potential misunderstandings as German scholars engaged with the knowledge traditions of Brahmanic Hinduism. A final section examines wider resonances as European scholars assimilated German methods and modeled their institutions and traditions on the German paradigm. The conclusion addresses shifts in the field as a result of postcolonial criticisms, epistemic transformations, critical histories, and declining resources. 2. As a consequence, in the past fifty years, there has been a paradigm shift in our interpreting the life process. In the process, modern biology had acquired a truly interdisciplinary character in which all streams of sciences have made monumental contributions. Because of such rapid emergence as a premier subject of teaching and research; a necessity to restructure classical teachings in biology was recognised by the academics worldwide. In tune with such trends, the academic leadership of Jawaharlal Nehru University conceptualised the School of Life Sciences as an interdisciplinary research/teaching programme unifying various facets of biology while reflecting essential commonality regarding structure, function and evolution of biomolecules. The School was established in 1973 and since offering integrated teaching and research at M. Sc/ Ph.D level in various sub-disciplines in life sciences. Since inception, it remained dedicated to its core objectives and evolved to be one of the top such institutions in India and perhaps in South East Asia.

    In and out of history: 12. how a Goan scholar in Bombay imagined a colonial Indian past and a future independent India (1870-1900) Filipa Lowndes Vicente 264 ambiguous inclusions: inside out, outside in introduction In his book on Portuguese men that achieved some prominence abroad, published in 1879, Bernardes Branco confessed that he had not been sure if Gerson da Cunha was Portuguese or English, and that he had had to contact Cunha Rivara, the Portuguese secretary of the Governor in Goa and a scholar, to resolve his doubts: “Mr. Gerson da Cunha is a Portuguese subject, born in Goa, of indigenous race and of the Brahman caste. He is established in Bombay as a doctor” was Cunha Rivara’s answer.1 In fact, Gerson da Cunha studied medicine in Bombay, Edinburgh and London, before returning to Bombay in the 1870s and making medicine his profession. However, his historical, archaeological and numismatic interests, mainly in themes related to the Portuguese in India, increasingly occupied a large part of his time and resulted in numerous articles and books published in the last three decades of the 19th century. José Gerson da Cunha’s biography and bibliography, his personal itinerary as well as his scholarly written production, will enable me to explore the idea of inclusion, and of exclusion, in three different yet interconnected ways. The first is through his actualbiographical itinerary. Living across different borders and spaces meant that foreignness and displacement were central words in the narrative of his life. I shall explore how da Cunha strove to be included in certain scholarly national spheres, such as the Italian; while apparently consciously excluding himself from Portugal, where his status would always be that of a Portuguese “other” and, therefore, subaltern in relation to mainstream scholarly local elites.

Abstract The Silk Road was an interconnected series of routes through Southern Asia traversed by caravans and ocean vessels, and connecting Chang’an (present Xi’an), China, with Antioch, Syria, as well as other countries. Its influence carried over into Korea and Japan. These exchanges were critical not only for the development and flowering of the great civilizations of Ancient Egypt, China, India and Rome but also laid the foundations of our modern world. Malik Mohammad Jaisi, the poet of Hindi in his work Padmavat describes Alauddin Khilji with Central Asian horses. In the middle Ages, especially under the Mughals a regular flow of trade through the overland caravan routes was established. During the reign of Akbar two caravan routes to Central Asia were in usage, one from Lahore to Kabul and the other from Multan to Kandhar, whereas Bukhara, Samarkand, Khiva and Merv were important centres of trade in Central Asia, and Peshawar, Shikarpur, and Multan functioned as important trade marts in India. The ancient Silk Road was once unsurpassed in the trade it took across continents, the cultures that were linked by the camel caravans and donkey who wended their way through its dust. Nowadays, as the old thoroughfare falls into poor condition and forgetfulness, regions along it are also suffering.
