The influence of the Presbyterian system on the cul- ture and progress of the human intellect well deserves attention and investigation on the part of the philo- sopher and the Christian. We doubt not that the in- fluence alluded to will be discovered, on careful and candid inquiry, to have been deep, wide-spread and sal- utary. A system so thoroughly organized as Presbyte- rianism, so powerful, so far-reaching, and so abiding in its general workings, cannot fail to exert a vast influence in elevating the human mind, or else in debasing it. Every political system, carried into practical operation, has an influence on mind, and every religious system, since no subject agitates man’s soul so profoundly as that of religion, must exert at least as marked an influ- ence, in proportion to the area over which it operates. Fetishism, the lowest form of religion, arising from a low condition of the human intellect, serves to fetter it in debasement and darkness. Christianity, the noblest form of religion, elevates, expands and ennobles the in- tellect of man. It is, in every respect, important to ascertain the in- fluence of any religious system on the human mind. That influence, according to the nature and degree of it, furnishes presumptive proof of the truth, or falsity of the system itself. He has been the subject of religious confessional history-writing which continues to skew our understanding of him. This thesis offers a radical reassessment of the first fifty years of Leighton’s life based upon the available primary evidence. The formative influences of Leighton’s Puritan anti-Episcopal father and his student years at the Town College of Edinburgh are re-evaluated. The possibility that he studied in Huguenot France in the 1630s is posited.

Torrance, Scottish Theology from John Knox to John McLeod Campbell (Edinburgh: T & T Clark, 1996. xii + 33Dpp. hb. ISBN 0-567-08532-5) and raises some questions regarding his depiction of Scottish Calvinism. Keywords: Theology; Scottish theology; T. F. Torrance; Calvinism. Dr Torrance's recent book is no mere historical sUIvey, dispassionately reviewing the story oftheology in Scotland. It is a highly personal state­ ment in which the author casts some theologians as heroes and others as villains. Many of his criteria command instant respect: stress on the trinitar­ ian nature of God, the centrality of the incarnation, the primacy of grace and the urgency of evangelism. Other emphases, however, are less securely based, particularly the almost paranoid aversion to lim­ ited atonement, the profound distaste for federal Theology, the stress on incarnational redemption and the partiality to the idea that Christ's human nature was fallen. These are the distinctives of Dr Torrance's own theology (which is not the same as saying that they are its heart) and the book is at its weakest when it claims the support of such men as Knox, Bruce, Binning, Leighton and Boston for these distinctives. As an inevitable corollary to this, Torrance argues that Calvinism (especially Scottish Calvinism) represented a radical breach with Calvin himself. Indeed, he can scarcely speak of Calvinism without attaching to it some opprobious epithet.

Somerset he main purpose of this article is to observe that many of the books Tpublished anonymously, and without place or name of printer, by Scottish Covenanters during the period 1664 to 1684 appear to have been printed by the same Dutch printer, Henry Goddaeus in Rotterdam (or possibly by his widow from 1684). Th is includes such famous works as Samuel Rutherford’s Letters (Joshua Redivivus) (1664, 1675), John Brown of Wamphray’s Apologeticall Narration (1665), James Stirling’s Naphtali (1667), Sir James Steuart’s Jus Populi Vindicatum (1669), Robert Fleming’s Fulfi lling of Scripture (1669, 1671), Robert Macward’s True Non-Conformist (1671), David Calderwood’s True History of the Church of Scotland (1678), and Th omas Forrester’s Rectius Instruendum (1684). Goddaeus was not a sympathizer with the Covenanters, however, but simply a commercial publisher, and in 1675 he printed an edition of the Roman Catholic Bishop John Lesley’s De Origine Moribus et rebus gestibus Scotorum (original edition 1578). Th e man behind this edition can be identifi ed (with high probability) as the Scottish Jesuit George Leslie, and thus Goddaeus was apparently printing simultaneously for Covenanters and for a Jesuit. Th e evidence behind this claim regarding the Goddaeus press is simply that many of the covenanting works from the period are printed in the same style, and with the same limited ornamentation, as are works bearing Goddaeus’s imprint, such as Brown of Wamphray’s De Causa Dei Contra Antisabbatarios (1674-1676).
